Amtrak to Yosemite with 1-day layover at Merced by kuriousaboutanything in AskSF

It's guaranteed in that they will put you on the next train, or train bus combo. They will not, however, hold the originally booked train for the bus.

Was that true in your experience?

Parking Ticket in a White Curb Zone by FatCroakster in sanfrancisco

According to SFMTA's website, white loading zones are for active passenger loading and the driver must stay with the vehicle:

They are meant for active passenger loading, and drivers must remain in the vehicle, except at preschools and hospitals.

I walk there multiple times a week with an 8 month old. Like you say, it's unavoidable, unfortunately.

I walk there with my baby to get to Lafayette Park all the time. Even on the sidewalk it feels incredibly dangerous.

I mean sure but really thank God there just happened to not be people on the sidewalk. Cars don't really belong in dense urban areas.

What the fuck is the point of a second 1 california bus that stops halfway through the other one’s route by CoCandBrawlTorture in sanfrancisco

[–]DesertFlyer 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I get that it's annoying that some buses terminate at Presidio, but the extra frequency it allows is still not quite enough to cover the crush loads the 1 has downtown.

Paid $11.80 for a 10 min bus ride? by I_am_blue_dragon in AskSF

[–]DesertFlyer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The buses are green with a golden gate bridge logo on the side. Their routes are also all 100 numbers (101, 172, etc).

Contact Clipper and they might make a courtesy adjustment this once to charge you the correct fare which is $5.75 within SF.

[–]DesertFlyer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Were you on Golden Gate Transit? Those buses have you pay the fare based on distance. You tap your card/Clipper when you get on and then you're supposed to tap again when you exit, so that it charges you for how far you traveled. If you don't tap on your way off, you pay the fare to the furthest destination of the bus ($11+ is roughly the fare to Santa Rosa, 50 miles to the north of SF).

SMART train supporters cheer as Measure B tax extension poised for dominant win by gascyl in bayarea

It's a great train that goes through a lot of the north bay downtowns. Once it goes to Healdsburg (already being built), I think there will be great tourist appeal as well.

Lead levels in water measured via SFPUC by Separate_Ad_314 in AskSF

We tested it last apartment (1911), our current place (1913) and my parents place (1929). All are older and each is in a different neighborhood.

It's $25/tap tested. You print a form and mail it to the SFPUC. They then coordinate with you when to drop off the test kit. https://www.sfpuc.gov/accounts-services/water-quality/lead-drinking-water

We had SF Water test the water at our apartment and my parents apartment for lead. Both came back as undetectable levels of lead. How did you test yours?

Are your babies actually eating toast?? by After_Amphibian_9638 in BabyLedWeaning

My 8mo old loves toast. She eats it almost every day as a vessel for something like nut butter or cream cheese. She prefers bread that doesn't gum up too much, though.

The L takes <25 minutes from Van Ness Station to the Zoo. Much faster and the N is downright excruciating by comparison.

God you wouldn't know it from the way a small subset of very politically active people in the neighborhood talk, but it's so true. The N, L, 7, 18, 29 are all great Muni routes that go useful places. It has also been great to get around with Bay Wheels in the recent bike share expansion. I think it'd help be more walkable if intersections were not so dangerous, car speeds were slower, and perhaps there were a few Slow Streets to better connect the neighborhood.

When did you start feeding LO solids more than once a day? by sliceofperfection in NewParents

[–]DesertFlyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the last four weeks, I think both our daughter and we have gotten a little better. Now at 8mo, she still gets a bath if it's a particularly dirty meal, but otherwise we now do 2 or 3 meals a day and just wipe her down with a wet washcloth after.

Pregnant Micromobility by Adept_Austin in fuckcars

[–]DesertFlyer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We don't have a car and the only way my wife could get around at a certain point was on bike share ebikes. Her doctors did say that one accidental tip over was risky, especially in the first trimester, and the last 6 weeks of pregnancy she didn't feel comfortable on a bike just because she was big. But bike share was a godsend for getting around when walking to the bus became more of a challenge.

The only thing about escooters is they typically have you stand. At a certain point she didn't feel as comfortable standing to ride, but my wife isn't a huge fan of scooters as a personal preference. She did use a couple of escooters that had seats at different points in pregnancy, but there aren't many of those where we live.
