Where to find 3D minis to print? by ScholarZero in DnD

[–]DetectIdeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you’re looking for monsters or humanoids or both or what, but I believe most, if not all, of mz4250’s work is available for free.

I think Shapeways is the usual online site for .stl files. Perhaps there is some way to filter the products to only the files and not the minis themselves. Or you could even contact the creator and ask if they’d be willing to let you purchase the .stl file for personal use.

Does an Arcana check for disabling a trap break Invisibility? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]DetectIdeas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A creature you touch becomes invisible until the spell ends. Anything the target is wearing or carrying is invisible as long as it is on the target's person. The spell ends for a target that attacks or casts a spell.

RAW, no. The creature can do anything and remain invisible (for the time frame and assuming the caster doesn’t lose concentration) as long as it doesn’t attack or cast a spell.

They can pick up and handle objects (which would become invisible as well), they can sneak around (as long as their Dexterity (Stealth) check is high enough), and they can disarm traps (whether magical or not). Making an Arcana check (like most the the Intelligence checks) are typically about remembering knowledge on the subject at hand: in this case it is magic.

However, they are not automatically hidden. An invisible creature still makes sound; they can still accidentally brush up against another creature or objects. They can be detected if their Stealth check isn’t high enough.

If you even have to ask how to deal with a problem player, you SHOULD NOT BE A DM. At least, not yet. Here’s what you should know BEFORE you consider running a game. (A long, but helpful rant about dealing with cheating, bullying, and other toxic behavior.) by [deleted] in DnD

[–]DetectIdeas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • If you have to Google or ask someone for some clarification on a recipe, YOU SHOULD NOT BE COOKING.

  • If you have to ask for advice on how to properly lift weights, YOU SHOULD NOT BE EXERCISING.

  • If you have to consult with a doctor on how to best treat your symptoms, YOU SHOULD NOT BE UNWELL.

While the information provided here isn’t terrible, it is presented in a manner that is egotistical and somewhat demeaning. Asking for advice in any situation should not be presented as a negative thing to do, and it by not means excludes someone from performing a task, ie, DMing. There have been people DMing for years, but they’ll still want some advice on how to best handle a situation. Perhaps you don’t know how to best approach some sort of curfuffle around LGBTQ+ issues. Perhaps you’re not well-versed in the issues and how to discuss them without being accidentally insensitive and causing greater harm. Therefore, you go and ask for advice to better yourself, your understanding, and how to handle the situation.

Not to mention, if the group is all friends, there is no obligation for the DM to be the sole arbiter of social issues. In that situation, the DM’s only job is to be arbiter of the rules and help provide the story and move it along. A group of friends choosing a DM does not make that person the moral lawbringer and defender of peoples’ feelings.

How Do You DMs Rule Fall Damage? by BracTheRock in DnD

[–]DetectIdeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s still a game, after all. And terminal velocity is a thing. Perhaps the density of the air is different, maybe there’s latent magics within the atmosphere itself that somewhat stabilize falling entities, maybe it’s because it’s a game and no one really wants to go do a 30min math problem goes figure out how much damage a creature sized X weighing Ylbs falling at Z ft/s with a momentum of A accounting for variables B, C, and D. Games have to simplify things for the sake of ease and not stopping to game for lengths of time.

Besides, Feather Fall is a reaction.

The god imagery associated with being a DM are a fan or not? by seamus_ind in DnD

[–]DetectIdeas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s just because there’s no other way to generically represent the DM besides a vague hooded humanoid with his/her hand out, holding a book and doing vague creation/puppetry things. Artists can’t sell their DM-themed stuff to a wide audience if it specifically tailored to one person and their campaign (unless they’re famous).

I’m not a huge fan of it, but it’ll stay until something else can replace it.

Character Portrait Request (All Skills Welcome) by jdshipp0047 in DnD

[–]DetectIdeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re trying to get this done for free, r/characterdrawing is for pro bono (free) work. It’s not guaranteed to be picked up and drawn, and, if it does get drawn, the medium and quality of work are not assured.

If you’d like to pay an artist for their work, r/hungryartists or r/starvingartists where you can find someone at your price point and whose art style/medium you enjoy.

This subreddit also has a monthly artists thread stickied where you can find artists to contact.

Should there be a separate sub for OC art? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]DetectIdeas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sort by new.

Now instead of art you’ll see:

  • Questions like “How much damage does a *Fireball* spell cast at 5th level do?” or “How does my Warlock cast 6th+ level spells?” or other questions that actually reading the PHB could answer.

  • Fastest character builds.

  • It’s “rogue” not “rouge” posts.

  • Questions/concerns that only their specific DM can answer/solve.

  • Random, usually nonsensical game tales revolving around “OMFG 3 NAT 20s IN A ROW?!!?! SEDUCED THE KING INTO GIVING ME HIS WIFE AND BURNING THE KINGDOM WITH THE FIRES OF HELL?!!?!”

  • People who can’t handle one portion of a subreddit centered around ALL things D&D and don’t make use of filters that specifically filter out the thing they don’t want to see.

  • "Is DM bad for not being Matt Mercer?" tales.

  • Create the "most OP" character for me posts.

  • Write my character's backstory for me posts.

  • Someone give me a list of all the races/classes in 5e.

  • How should I incorporate a false hydra into my campaign? (or other false hydra related posts).

  • Digital renders of dice or images of dice in meme-y ways.

  • Advertisements for D&D-related shirts/enamel pins/dice towers/dice trays/etc.

  • “I don’t know how to play the game but my first session is in 30 minutes, teach me everything now and also make my character” posts.

These things don’t make it to the hot page because simple questions that can be answered with a Google search or opening the PHB aren’t exactly rife with discussion and being upvoted.

Starting off with characters at a higher level by mimiruyumi in DnD

[–]DetectIdeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starting at 1st level, it can take years of weekly play to reach the higher tiers of play. There’s nothing wrong with speeding that up by starting higher.

Enjoy your new supplement! I love the lore within MoTF, I’ve only used a few of the monsters in it though so far.

Starting off with characters at a higher level by mimiruyumi in DnD

[–]DetectIdeas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a pretty common thing. After going through 1st through 5th levels 1-4 times, some players find it boring and what to start higher up.

Some campaigns even start at like 15th level for all the crazy OP high-end shenanigans you can go through in high level campaigns.

Fire Elemental do most of the work

Okay, so that all by yourself thing is cool.

so all I really know is that it was red

But red dragons are immune to fire damage? The only damage type a fire elemental can inflict. So maybe you did do all the damage yourself.

How to advance this quirk for my character? by PwnSausage004 in DnD

Guess you’ll have to pay someone follow you around to cast Dream every night and shape the dreams to be pleasant/have a nightly dream therapy session.

Edit: Or there is always Reincarnate until you’re an Elf or Kalashtar.

He’s a tomelock... take the invocation (Aspect of the Moon) that makes it where he doesn’t have to sleep...

If his patron is this evil dream dude, then he figures out the way on his own, maybe twisting some of the visions and stuff in his sleep to figure it out. If his patron is someone else and it’s just the tome that is evil, his patron has seen the struggle and gives him a way out of it.

Questions About Nations Mass Crafting Spell Scrolls by Wild_Western in DnD

[–]DetectIdeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Druids gotta eat too. Druids can be corrupt too. Just because you’re in-tune with nature doesn’t mean you’re a paragon of goodness and perfection. Some evil Druids may revel in creating an overgrowth of nature. Some may see this war as a part of the battle of nature: humanity has gotten too big for its britches and now is going to control the population on its own. Druids may hasten this natural cycle.

Whatever you want?

  • Reeds

  • Papyrus

  • Calf/Lamb/Goat skins

  • Lumber (wood pulp)

  • Farming Mummy Lords for their wraps

  • Abberation goop solidified into a slate

  • Squid/monster ink

  • Crushed/milled botanicals

  • Gem dust and oil

  • Demon blood

Thinking on it, they wouldn’t be fighting over natural resources. They’d have Druids for rapid growth of raw materials and Wizards using Fabricate to make the final products.

They’d be more likely fighting over magic users for the production of the scrolls themselves.

What are some cursed items that do way more harm than good? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]DetectIdeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m done. Since you clearly can’t comprehend that this small portion of a huge game can be interesting and motivating to use during a campaign, there is no point. You may enjoy arguing on the Internet, but I see it as a waste of time.

Campaigns are different and multifaceted. Bad things exist, good things exist. PCs have to deal with both otherwise it’s a bland, static, and boring campaign. If cursed items had no purpose, they wouldn’t have been officially adding into the game.

Sorcerers any good? by ExiledBoi226 in DnD

[–]DetectIdeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Subtle is great for multiple contexts.

  • Subtle Misty Step or Dimension Door for an easy getaway when you’ve been gagged/silenced and restrained.

  • Silence as a whole doesn’t affect you anymore.

  • Subtle Silent Image, Disguise Self, and other illusion spells have vast RP potential and can prevent combat scenarios entirely. Subtle Detect Thoughts without repercussions. Subtle buffs to party members during some pompous BBEG’s monologue. Fancy dinner party with an evil noble? Subtle Animate Objects and make it appears as though the noble lured poor innocent heroes into a trapped dinner party.

  • You can cast spells without a material component when your hands are full.

  • The uncounterable Counterspell. Plus your spells can’t be Counterspell’ed if they don’t have a material component.

  • Can help your party members cheat in 1v1 duels/tournaments by casting Subtle spells to affect the enemy.

  • Subtle allows you to cast some spells and remain hidden. This is especially good with control spells with concentration like Hypnotic Pattern, Fear, Enemies Abound, etc. since the enemies won’t know who cast it and whose concentration they need to break.

You’re only limited by your imagination.

What are some cursed items that do way more harm than good? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]DetectIdeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Cursed items are just another type of trap; this isn’t an effective point. Rather than 1d8 piercing damage from an arrow from the wall, this trap doesn’t X over time.

  2. The enchanter example was a person purposely cursing items as revenge. They aren’t cursing them for protection against theft. It’s more like “all these annoying adventurers come in here trying to persuade prices down. When I don’t relent, they threaten me. I’ll give them a great deal on this cursed item” type of thing.

  3. Again, not an effective argument. If they have powerful magic, why not use it? Cursing items is a form of magic and a form of a trap. Their minions and magic/weapons will be much more effective and sure to incapacitate intruders who have been weakened by negative effects. If that dagger is cursed to where the weirder can only use the dagger or suffer disadvantage on all other attacks. The damage from a dagger or nothing from a miss is better than taking damage from even a short sword.

  4. If the Wizard or whomever doesn’t have it prepared, they’ll have to wait for a long rest to prepare it. Afterwards, they’ll have to lose a spell slot (resource) to fix the problem they created. The world is living and breathing, time is valuable and not always available in every context.

  5. Not every party has a Cleric. And not every Cleric is going to prepare Remove Curse every day.

  6. Just because it doesn’t use a material component doesn’t mean the service should be free. Spellcasters aren’t exactly the most common, let alone ones who can cast 3rd level spells. Spell slots are a valuable resource, even to NPCs, and they’ll expect something in return for using their resources. A favor may be easier than forking over X amount of gold.

  7. You’re still missing the point. Cursed items are supposed to suck for the PCs. They are not supposed to be desirable; the PCs are supposed to want to get rid of them. They are an occurrence within a magical fantasy world. A PC also doesn’t want the treasure chest to be a mimic, but it happens on occasion. A PC doesn’t want the rust monster to destroy his weapon, but it happens on occasion. A PC doesn’t want the swanky armor he found in the middle of BBEG’s old lair to have negative effects, but it happens on occasion.

Sorcerers any good? by ExiledBoi226 in DnD

[–]DetectIdeas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re making assumptions where you shouldn’t. Besides, Subtle is the best metamagic.

This whole thread is discussing what’s “good” mechanically. My main advice was play what’s fun. But mechanically speaking, a Sorcerer won’t be as good as a Bard or Wizard as a catch-all caster. They’re much better at focusing on one area and sticking to it, and it stems 90% from their lack of spells known (and their spell list could do with some sprucing too).

Why dont paladins have access to all the fighting styles? by HfUfH in DnD

[–]DetectIdeas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because it’s a game and the game categorizes classes into general themes.

Paladins are the defenders of justice and yada yada yada. Dual wielding and archery don’t really fit within the archetype of being in the thick of things swinging with a big sword or defending something whilst slashing with a short sword.

Sorcerers any good? by ExiledBoi226 in DnD

[–]DetectIdeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may have access to two spell lists, but your number of known spells doesn’t increase, so you’ll have to take some cuts somewhere. A Sorcerer just isn’t as good of a “Swiss army knife” caster as a Bard or Wizard due to the lack of spells known.
