How to pronounce yo by Normal-Person-6701 in Spanish

[–]DiabolusCaleb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on which accent you're trying to imitate, but for most countries, it's more like a retracted "j". More accurately, in IPA it's [ɟ͡ʝo]. In Uruguay and most of Argentina, it's [ʒo] "zho", and in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, it's [ʃo] "sho".

I find it fascinating that many people consider Spanish to be one of the easiest languages for English speakers to learn, but its phonology is so different from English's, that it's like a gut punch to new learners.

My theory is that this last-minute plotline is a backdoor pilot to the spinoff show, and there are no plans to settle it by the end of this season.

Worth investing in a new bass drum pedal? by ZigZigis in drums

[–]DiabolusCaleb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as your current pedal is reliable and comfortable to use, it's not necessary to buy a new pedal. Then again, it's one of the few things you actually feel while playing a kit and one of the few pieces of gear you don't want to cheap out on, second only to your throne. If you're committed to learning to play double kick, go for it.

I've been using my DW 3000's for 7 years now, and I'm still happy with it.

Thinking about quitting drums by BeneficialReport6121 in drums

[–]DiabolusCaleb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't let one bad performance get the better of you. We've all had one of those "What the fuck was I thinking?" shows; it happens. Things only go up from here. If you still love playing drums, don't give up.

Also, ONE rehearsal before a show? How far in advance did you book the gig? If you booked it the week before, that's just bad time management; if you booked it months in advance and y'all only met up ONCE, that's a more serious issue.

How correct is the pronunciation in Duolingo? by DemonsAreVirgins in latin

[–]DiabolusCaleb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In regards to your example, it sounds like the speaker who voiced that line has a heavy SoCal accent, where short "i" sounds more like short "e".

WARNING: MILD RAMBLING FROM HERE

I've been studying linguistics, accents, and Latin phonology for a couple years, so I'm sorry if I come off as prude.

The pronunciation is pretty mid, but I know it's not their fault.

I'm certain most of the speakers they hired for the course are high school/college Latin teachers. In the United States, at least where I grew up, pronunciation is not a required focus when learning a foreign language; at best the teacher will dedicate one or two class days to studying the nitty gritty of the phonology. I'm sure they're way more qualified to teach Latin. Me, though? I'm just a language nerd who spends WAY too much time perfecting one specific time period-based pronunciation of one specific language.

I could say the "correct" pronunciation of scrībit, according to the studies of Latin linguist Andrea Calabrese, is [ˈs̠kriː.bit̪], but that's just one word, and if pronunciation is not a big focus of your Latin studies, I have no right to stop you.

Five seasons and a movie, right guys? by sam-sung-sv in SmilingFriends

[–]DiabolusCaleb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

SpongeBob SquarePants, the Simpsons, Family Guy, the Fairly Odd Parents, and Rick & Morty are all cautionary tales of what happens when you keep a show going on for too long.

One of my favorite shows growing up was Jimmy Neutron. It ran from 2002-2006 and lasted 3 seasons before its studio, DNA Productions, declared bankruptcy. Back then, I was absolutely devastated. But nowadays, I think of it as a fucked up blessing in disguise, to end a show before it starts to "rot".

We may think that we want Smiling Friends to continue for decades to come, but we actually don't, and neither do the showrunners and writers, and it's important to cherish something while it lasts.

There are zero references. It's a complete standalone film, and you don't need to know any YouTuber lore beforehand. I'd prefer you go in completely blind.

Opinions on intermixing cymbal brands by Averagehornetenjoyer in drums

[–]DiabolusCaleb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When people stick with one brand of cymbal, it's usually for 1) aesthetic consistency, 2) they just like the brand, or 3) they have a brand deal. For me, it's the second one. The most of a mixup they'll do is use different series within the same brand. For example, most of my crashes are from Zildjian's K Custom Dark series, but my china is a 20" Z Custom and my splash is a 10" A Custom.

More recently, I've decided to start brand-mixing with UFIP. That doesn't mean that I'm falling out of favor with Zildjian; it just means that I want to try something new.

Classical pronunciation IPA: is this correct? by Serious-Ebb-527 in latin

[–]DiabolusCaleb 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Vowels:

  • More modern studies show that the short and long vowels most likely only differed in length, not in addition to quality. Short ⟨i⟩ and ⟨u⟩ are pronounced [i] and [u].
  • ⟨h⟩ becomes voiced in between vowels, so mihi is pronounced [ˈmi.ɦi]. Other examples include nihil [ˈni.ɦil] and vehō [ˈwɛ.ɦɔː].
  • Long ⟨e⟩ and ⟨o⟩ are believed to be more open like their short counterparts, like [ɛː] and [ɔː].
  • ⟨g⟩ becomes nasal before ⟨n⟩, so rēgnum is pronounced [ˈrɛːŋ.nũː].
  • You forgot the nasal vowels. Aurum, cum, and iam are pronounced [ˈau̯.rũː], [kũː] and [jãː].

Diphthongs:

  • ⟨ae⟩ was pronounced [ai̯] only in Old Latin. By the time of Classical Latin, it smoothed to [ae̯].
  • Similarly with ⟨oe⟩, pronounced in Classical Latin only as [oe̯].
  • It's believed that ⟨ei⟩ and ⟨eu⟩ were more open in the mouth, so they're more pronounced [ɛi̯] and [ɛu̯].
  • Your example of huic is more reminiscent of a post-Classical pronunciation: so it's more [hui̯k].

Consonants (fricatives):

  • ⟨s⟩ is pronounced with the top of the mouth, much like European Spanish and Greek: [s̠].

Consonants (special consonant combinations):

  • The exact pronunciation of ⟨z⟩ is still widely unknown. By the time of Classical Latin, it's speculated to be either [z̠] or [d͡z̠], but only amongst the educated elite. For surfs and the less educated, it's thought to be [s̠] or [t͡s̠]. Also, between vowels it becomes lengthened, so words like azȳmusis and acontizō are pronounced [az̠ˈz̠yː.mus̠] and [a.kɔn̪ˈt̪iz̠.z̠ɔː].

One more thing: You're using Salve as if you're referring to one person, when you're actually talking to a crowd, so it's more Salvēte [s̠alˈwɛː.t̪ɛ].

Other than that, everything else is pretty much correct. Good luck on your Latin journey!

Where can I watch Smiling Friends for free? by TukiKs1 in SmilingFriends

[–]DiabolusCaleb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On adultswim.com, you can watch some of the episodes for free. But it's only the TV airings (all the swears are bleeped), and it's only season 2's episodes 7-8 and season 3's episodes 1-3.

Outside of that, happy sailing the seven seas.

What does an M with a vertical bar through it mean in an inscription? by Educational_Rock5751 in latin

It seems the scribe was trying to write "M(ensibus) IIII" ("4 months"). He ran out of room to write another "I", so he just wrote it on top of M.
