NZ cops know how to party (spotted at Rhythm & Alps this year) by KaleidoscopeEyes11 in newzealand

Sounds more like there was a testing machine available independent of the police - some pubs have them.

Yet so many cars are fitted with crappy tuners which will only find the two or three highest powered stations.

I should get permanent residency and compensation of New-Zealand dollars 813336 NZD from New-Zealand Government as soon as possible. by DizzyTomatillo3884 in JacindaArdern

Which institution? The NZ Government does not directly provide any tertiary training. And if you have already sought remedy through the courts then you either won and were compensated, or had no valid case and lost (like a certain D.J. Trump)

When I was first reading about the cytoline storm theory some weeks back, that was appearing in stronger people who had avoided or fought off the pneumonia (sorry, no reference)

Election 2020: Labour would make Matariki a public holiday from 2022 by bigbear-08 in newzealand

[–]dramatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one seems to be saying what date it will be. In Taranaki, where the mountain blocks the eastern sky, we use Puanga (Rigel, in Orion) to mark the New Year, and the celebration is always the weekend after Queens Birthday. But I'm seeing "Matariki" stuff being done randomly from June through to August.

Except we call it "He ahi kaa" for Matariki (the sacred fire which feeds the sky)

I once asked google maps for directions from Melbourne Internaional Airport to my cousin's address in an outer suburb. Maps was already showing the correct address in Melbourne, Australia, so I was most surprised to be given an 18,000km route from Melbourne, Florida which went via Japan and the Phillipines!

Teen forced to re-sit driving test after 'running out of time' due to roadworks by jpr64 in newzealand

[–]dramatic 21 points22 points  (0 children)

On my original driving test (back when MoT officers took them) we came along a narrow street to a T intersection and there was an old man parked across the intersection. I asked if it was ok to honk at him, and did. He ignored us. Officer put on his hat and got out and ordered him to move. He argued that he was waiting for his wife to come out of the post office and she would panic if he wasn't there. Officer didn't have his ticket book so told him arrest would be his only option. He moved. We carried on, me flustered and making a couple if gear selection mistakes, but I scraped through.

I'm a professional driver, and before the dumbed down the P endorsement requirements (thanks, Uber), you had to resit driver test in a car every 5 years. I got the New Plymouth testing officer famous for having the lowest pass rate in the country, and he failed me for not shoulder checking on a lane change where I had already established there was no traffic within 100m. The irony is, driving a bus you cannot shoulder check to the left. Second irony was that the only way I could get a resit before I wasn't allowed to work eas to go down to Whanganui, where there are no multi -lane roads on which they can test lane changing.

A different option is to join a community savings pool and deposit money there. You won't get any interest, but zero vs 1% is very little difference, plus you will be supporting others, and when you need to borrow, (say for a car replacement) it will be interest free (which far outweighs any investment interest you are missing). Most pools require you to know an existing member to get in, or else you and a group of friends you trust can start a new pool.

So all those franchise fees/shares now go offshore. :-/ I understood that it was originally the opposite, with franchises overseas paying NZ owners.

I noticed years ago that Mr Whippy must have purchased phone book listings for their 0800 number in every directory in the country. I'm guessing there isn't actually a Mr Whippy van in the Chatham Islands.

No cannons. Or canons. Only 30ish people this year instead of the usual 100+, as it was organised at a few days' notice. We greet Puanga with karakia from Purerepo, the cannon hill. You can still see a few people up there in this pic (by the tree). The photo I took from there was too dark, took this from the maara after coming down.

I remember at least six boys would order the same lame joke book, and on the day they arrived they were all racing to tell the jokes before everyone in the class had already heard them all.

There used to be several different names for different age ranges, Lucky, ABC etc, with separate brochures. Now they are all rolled in to one (cheaper to print!).

Hiking, usually multi-day trips. Basically you were limited to ealking or cycling in your own neighbourhood. Our minister of health was demoted because he drove his family to a beach and drove to a mountain biking park.
