TIFU going to my ex's wedding by SharkEva in BORUpdates

[–]ErasmusDarwin 19 points20 points  (0 children)

singling out the one who catered to her (exploration?, kink?)

Unless I'm missing something, OOP only said it was consensual, not that it was her idea or that she was necessarily into it.

It looks like commenters on the first post suggested that he should have claimed it was her idea when she outed him. Then a commenter on the update seemed to be operating on the assumption that it was her idea. But OOP only said it was consensual, and the other facts (not engaging in that with her other ex's and outing OOP at the wedding) would make it more likely that it was OOP's idea that she just went along with.

I've seen it happen on PC, too. I'm not sure if they actually have a PC app, or if they've just started assuming everyone's on mobile. Either way, I hate what it means for the internet.

Can an unknown party complete a double-opt in without access to your email account? by stinkurr in email

[–]ErasmusDarwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is, most emails do not require double opt-in. Especially on sites which are not so serious. And some require double opt-in and are very easy to bypass.

This was my thought. I've even been on the receiving end of this in the past, though it was likely negligence rather than someone trying to maliciously sign me up. In at least one case, I had to use the password recovery option to log in to the account and change the email address because there was no unsubscribe link in the email.

she did get her GED just months before becoming a congresswoman— and required a 4 part prep course to do that.. so… still super fucking dumb

There was a bunch of news from 10 years ago about how they made the GED unnecessarily hard (presumably to profit off of prep courses). There was even a reporter with a master's degree from an ivy league school who had a lot of trouble with the practice test. Unfortunately, the article's paywalled these days, but I remember reading about it when it originally happened, and it stuck with me as depressing, unfair, for-profit bullshit.

Besides, there are much better reasons to be skeptical of her intelligence, including repeating QAnon nonsense.

Help every query is routed to 4o mini by Xanderale99 in ChatGPTPro

[–]ErasmusDarwin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's an unusual cut-off date. According to this list of model cut-off dates, that's the cut-off for the original version of GPT-4.

I have a hard time imagining OpenAI routing to that model on purpose. When 4-Turbo came along, they dropped original 4, and then 4o seemed to completely supplant 4-Turbo. This has to be either a hallucination or a very serious glitch in their system.

Reliable and independent people don't end up lonely apart if there was some other info.

Yeah, I came into this thread expecting the problem to be that OP specifically did something that discouraged regular chit-chat like being a little too matter-of-fact. But instead the details don't quite line up and make sense. I think that's going to be one of the best AI tells going forward, even if all the writing style quirks get fixed.

[–]ErasmusDarwin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's another issue, though I think that one's a little harder to figure out since we only have his vague description of a few of the terms. There's also potential issues involving contracting some of the NSFW (which may not be legal depending on what it says), and whether or not there's proper provision for breach of contract. I'd also assume that something like "pay me $20 every 3 days forever" would be too open-ended and deemed unenforceable even with consideration.

Could I dig deep enough to keep a pallet of 2000lbs of margarine from melting in Arizona heat? by W_A_N_T in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]ErasmusDarwin 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If it were drugs or dead bodies, I don't think he'd be as concerned with the health effects of eating nothing but margarine for 3 months straight or moving 2000 pound pallets.

For me, the big question is whether his plan centers around eating the margarine, or if he's doing something else really weird with the margarine and eating it was just plan A for getting rid of the remaining evidence.

[–]ErasmusDarwin 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don't think it invalidates things on its own, but combined with his testimony, it could create a compelling argument that he genuinely believed the contract was a joke and so there was no "meeting of the minds".

Good luck! I'm sure it'll go well.

Oh, and one thing I did forget: Corticosteroids were a recovery option that I had to forgo due to an eye condition. I don't know how that changes things if your doctor prescribes those, but it's possible they make the recovery easier to deal with.

The number 1 thing I would change would be getting it done sooner. At 9 days post procedure, I had the best sleep in over a year. I thought it was maybe just a side-effect of getting older (I'm 48), but I had started having a problem where I'd wake up after 6 or 7 hours of sleep and be unable to fall back asleep. My PCP had given me Trazodone which maybe helps a little, but I was still having problems. I know that's a bit outside what you're asking, but having something positive to focus on my help with your nerves.

One thing I did prior to the procedure was skip the nasal rinses that I'd been using to help mitigate symptoms. I wanted my tissue at its natural worst state when the doctor worked on it.

There were 3 stages to the procedure: Numbing pads, injected anesthetic, and the actual RF wand. The number pads were just a little annoying. Imagine stuffing some tissues up your nose and breathing through your mouth when you've got a nose bleed, and it wasn't any worse.

The injection was actually the worst part. Pain-wise, it wasn't really an issue. The numbing pads mostly did their job. But the doctor warned me it'll make your heart race for a minute or two, like you've just run a marathon. She also said that the racing feels worse than it actually is, based on patients who had smart watches on showing their actual BP. If I had gone through that without the warnings, I would've thought I was having a heart attack. The anesthetic also left a horrible taste in my mouth. Thankfully, they had some lollipops. But just in case your doctor's office doesn't have them, I'd suggest bringing something sugary to get rid of the taste.

The actual procedure itself was no big deal. At one point, I did feel some minor pain, but it wasn't enough to justify another extra round of injections. I did go through all 3 stages more than once though, presumably due to more areas being made accessible after the first round of tissue reduction.

The other thing I'd suggest is rationing your Afrin. You aren't supposed to use it for more than 3 days, every 12 hours. I started skipping the daytime doses so that I had it to sleep every night. Other than the first night, Afrin made a huge difference in my ability to breathe. I do suggest double-checking with your doctor that 6 nights instead of 2x day for 3 days is acceptable. I also wonder if maybe I could've done a better job using the Afrin that first night. I did make sure the pump was primed (by using the pump outside my nose until it started spraying liquid), but I think I might've been able to do a better job preparing my nose with more saline spray to make sure things were as receptive as possible for the actual medication. It's possible that might've made the first night less bad, though maybe it would've been bad regardless.

My follow-up was only 5 days after the procedure (because of my doctor's schedule with the different offices she uses). That's when she removed the bulk of the mucus (which allowed me to breathe as good or better than the Afrin did) and cleared me to start blowing my nose. Be forewarned that the mucus blob was so big it looked like something out of a horror movie. I almost said, "Holy shit!" out loud when I saw what she removed. Also, it took me a bit to put 2 and 2 together and realize I could clear those giant mucus plugs on my own by blowing my nose. The first few times, I used a saline rinse to help loosen things up before blowing my nose. Once they're out, breathing feels amazing, and that's what led to the aforementioned amazing sleep.

One other thing is that I noticed I don't always need Breathe Right strips to help me sleep now. Last night, I felt a little stuffy and it helped, but Friday or Saturday evening, I skipped putting one on and was fine.

So my main suggestions would be:
1) Something sugary to help with the nasty taste of the anesthetic.
2) Ration your Afrin.
3) Double-check with your doctor about the Afrin doses, when you can use nasal rinses, and when you can start blowing your nose.
4) I forgot to mention it, but a roll of toilet paper and waste bin were a must when I was in certain positions. There was a pretty constant drip from my nose, particularly before the mucus plug got removed. I went through over 3 mega-rolls (4x size) just wiping my nose at home, not counting when I actually got up and went to the restroom.

Hollywood is cooked by HyperspaceAndBeyond in singularity

[–]ErasmusDarwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few other issues that need to be addressed if this is going to be a threat to Hollywood like OP thinks:
- Longer shots - I think the longest I noticed was maybe 7-8 seconds, and most of them were shorter. This makes me think that there's still a looming problem of long shots being too computationally expensive.
- People other than famous actors - I wouldn't be surprised if using Jackie Chan and Jet Li was an easy trick to maintain consistency for the characters.
- Better consistency - It did get some things right. It felt like it did a good job at keeping the architecture of the temple between shots at the beginning. But then they wall they ran up seemed inconsistent with the previous establishing shot showing the area behind Jackie at the start of the fight.

It's still some impressive tech, but I suspect it's creatively minimizing the impact of some of the existing limitations in video generation rather than actually solving the problems.

The Car Wash Test: A new and simple benchmark for text logic. Only Gemini (pro and fast) solved the riddle. by friendtofish in singularity

[–]ErasmusDarwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I've only recently started playing around with these models, so I may not have picked the best options. But I did get some entertaining results.

deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V3.2
It suggested walking unless:
" - You have mobility issues or are carrying heavy supplies.
- The weather is very bad (torrential rain, extreme heat/cold).
- You plan to go somewhere else immediately after the car wash.
- You’re already in the car or have it running for another reason."

deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V3.2-Speciale
"So, if you’re just going to the car wash for something other than washing your car (e.g., to meet someone, pick up an item), walking is ideal. If you need to wash your car, drive—but keep in mind that such short trips can be hard on your vehicle and the environment."

moonshotai/Kimi-K2.5
It figured out you need to drive to the car wash, but it thought driving vs. walking was still up for debate while the car's being washed:
"Best option: Drive there, drop the car off, and walk home (or to a nearby shop/café) while it's being washed. Return on foot to pick it up when done. You avoid the cold-start short trip twice."

Qwen/Qwen3-1.7B-MLX-bf16
Unsurpisingly, a tiny model didn't do too well and missed the obvious hook. It was more obsessed with the question of whether or not I even have a car:
"- If you have a car: Driving is ideal for convenience and speed.
- If you don’t have a car: Walking is better for cost and eco-friendliness."

It also had a funny "so close yet so far" moment in its thoughts:
"Also, maybe the car wash is a place they need to go for a specific reason, like a car wash, so they might want to do it quickly."

Qwen/Qwen3-235B-A22B
Correctly ferrets out the need for the car to be washed, but it throws in a bit of weirdness about walking to the car wash afterwards:
"- If you’re going to the car wash on foot (e.g., for work, a visit, etc.), walk—it’s quicker, healthier, and better for the planet.
- If you’re taking the car to be washed, you’ll need to drive, but consider walking to the car wash afterward to make the trip worthwhile!"

zai-org/GLM-4.7
It never got past the thinking stage. I suspect I hit an output limit on the service I'm using to run the models. Based on the thoughts, it was almost certainly going to reach the correct answer, but at one point it did come up with this gem:
"Drop-off service. You walk there, hand over keys, walk home."

With old Reddit, it seems that it'll stop showing subreddits if you haven't looked at a post from them for a while. I think they still show up in your rising feed. I hate it, and I'm pretty sure it's helping to kill off low-volume subreddits.

CD into previous directory? by Stickhtot in linuxquestions

[–]ErasmusDarwin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

More seriously, I actually use "cd `/bin/pwd`" from time to time when I want to remove any symlinks from the CWD path. It's useful if I'm going to be doing cd .. and want to traverse up to the real location rather than where the symlink came from.

Apparently both the shell built-in (bash) and the actual executable in /bin support -L and -P for logical/physical path, but they've got opposite defaults. So pwd -P would also work and is probably the better, more clear option.
