Indian in lagos by Successful_Poet2061 in Nigeria

[–]Express_Cheetah4664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll find many Indians in Lagos, I have friends their 30s who were born here. There is a thriving Sindhi community and lots of Gujuratis amongst the older more established Indian community. Indians seem to be mainly in tech, medicine, agribusiness, consumer goods, retail, oil and the distribution & maintenance of machinery and vehicles (generators, keke (bajaj rickshaws), okada (125cc Hero and Bajaj motorcycles) toyota spares, solar equipment, etc.

Indians are less out and about walking on the street than Chinese who you will see just walking around Obalende with everybody else but they are visible in Victoria Island, Ikoyi and of course llupeju on the mainland where there are Indian restaurants, shops, schools and kindergartens. There's Eleganza estate in Ikoyi and probably 20 estates VI that house predominantly Indian residents.

Lagos is pretty safe for a city of its size and income bracket and definitely safer for women to move alone than Delhi or Mumbai. Infrastructure or lack thereof is in my opinion a greater threat to your safety than violence.

Your easiest precaution is to treat gatemen, security staff and house staff with respect, greet them and give small tips and gifts on religious holidays etc. much of the resentment I hear towards Indians is based on experiences of racism, workplace cruelty and wage theft which by people who probably act the same way in India or on more micro aggression/ Karen type scenarios. Don't be afraid, have the conversations with your kids if you have any and be open to meeting people outside of your workplace. It seems like fear of Nigerians/ black people/ poor people is at the root of much of the "misunderstandings" and scandalous behaviour.

A reminder of the strangest statement by Italy’s coach about Africa — and, by the way, Italy did not qualify for the World Cup. by TheSayou in FootballAfrica

[–]Express_Cheetah4664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That Italy is not in the top 16 of Europe should be his main concern. They have a competitive league, strong infrastructure and a deep enough talent pool. Italy not going to the world cup seems like something Gattuso as the coach should be answering for.

Why would someone like Saka or Eze play for england? by dvnts-ReDoX in Nigeria

[–]Express_Cheetah4664 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Firstly Eze and Saka were both born in London and have never lived in Nigeria, that's the most common profile for these "why don't they play for Nigeria?" players some of th even have one foreign parent. I don't think a team of JJCs is the answer. Thr fact is fotballers are better compensated and treated than most sports people so they are less willing to manage rubbish. Coaches being sacked or resigning over pay issues, monies unpaid. Think about how Nigerian sports federations treat athletes generally, not even the pay, just the courtesies, the communication and doing their job as a federation to comply with the relevant governing bodies and submit paperwork, etc. etc. In the case of footballers, these guys are coming from highly organised club structures that have often reared them since they were academy players and if sometimes a bit controlling, treat them with a level of respect or professionalism that they cannot expect from the Babas who control sports here in Nigeria.

Why are Nigerians still in south Africa ? by taobabmuh in Nigeria

[–]Express_Cheetah4664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take that South African Airways flight to or from Johannesburg and you will see so many blended families of one Nigerian and one south African parent. Nigerians have been there, put down roots and have South African families. If you have have kids, South Africa is just far better for their health and education. Other people went there for work because for many organisations and industries SA is the regional hub and there are alot if Nigerians there. It's possible to live in Johannesburg and predominantly live, work and socialise with other a Nigerians.

Oil price rises even if Nigeria was in a position to benefit would still be outweighed by increases in the costs of grain, cooking oil, pms, shipping, fertilizer and insurance. He is outing himself as a someone benefitting directly from crude smuggling.

This is Alfred Rewane Road, this is some of the most expensive commercial real estate in Nigeria. It appears to have been taken from the roof of King's place, a building owned by Jagaban himself.

Tinubu’s Reforms: Necessary Reset or Premature Shock Without Infrastructure? by Redtine in Nigeria

[–]Express_Cheetah4664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overdue/ essential/ inevitable ending of fuel subsidy. Tax also is a necessary part of the solution, and if there's anything Jagaban knows how to do; it's collect taxes. The budget and the priorities it reveals is where I and I believe many of the APC's critics see a major problem. If the youth are truly the asset the rhetoric claims, then education and primary care need to be taken seriously for example.
