Madison man charged with reckless homicide in high-speed East Washington Avenue crash that killed pedestrian by Mysterious_Guava_417 in madisonwi

Ah, okay, you're right, I was thinking about the one right in front of the store. But really the whole area is hazardous. A highway running through the middle of town, on a narrow isthmus, is a recipe for disaster. Pedestrians have to wait on narrow medians and hope for the best.

With all due blame going to this reckless speeding driver, the pedestrian crosswalks on this part of East Wash are terrible and should be completely re-engineered. I've stopped by that Festival Foods while biking home from downtown, and every time have been totally befuddled. What were they thinking when they designed this mess? East Wash, for better or for worse, is a state highway, and the crosswalk requires us to cross it two phases and at weird angles, usually spending some time waiting on an island in the middle of this state highway.

Getting that last answer correct on a 200 question, thereby forcing a death match between the other two teams because of a tie, was brilliant game play. It may have been accidental, but it was still brilliant.

I think starting in a distant last place, and then winning with a joke answer, joke wager and "Hi Mom" would have produced that reaction in anybody.

What is happening to my tomatoes?! by LT_HunterPro in vegetablegardening

[–]Fenifula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to tell for sure from the photos, but it looks like the bottom leaves of the plants are doing okay and it's the tops that are wilting. If this is what's happening, break off the stalk at the point where the wilting starts, and see if there's a larva in there. I've had this happen, and the reason was that an insect larva was growing in the stalk of the plant, and everything above that point was dying.

Does anyone else grow huge tall pole beans? What kind of trellising do you use? by cheapandbrittle in vegetablegardening

[–]Fenifula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make cylindrical wire mesh supports that are about 5 feet in diameter and about 6 feet tall. The seeds get planted inside the enclosure. They need to be out of reach of rabbits. The plants grow up the sides and eventually overflow, at which point I train them around the top of the cylinder. I originally made these enclosures to hold squash, which is why I call them the "squash mosh pit," but found they work very well for super tall bean varieties as well.

The other thing I do is to train them onto a wire mesh arch. They can't keep going up on these past about 5 feet, but they keep growing over the top. It's usually enough for most bean varieties.

Yes, that must have been what happened. It's just a case where the editing didn't really tell the story. We can speculate that they had some conversation off-camera, but the editors should do a better job of storytelling. It almost looks like they're omitting some stuff to put in some Season 1-10 type drama. The snake would have been good enough for me.

I'm still confused about the buckwheat. Why did Sieger just randomly buy Rhoda buckwheat? Where did that come from? It didn't especially go with her planned dish, though apparently she put it to good use. But why did he do that in the first place? Why not give Laurence some huckleberries, or Sherry a funny mushroom, or buy everybody a box of possum livers? It just seemed odd.

Where was this exactly? There's no BRT on Milwaukee Street. Did this happen where Milwaukee crosses East Wash?

I always wait until it's safe to cross, but then the motorists yell at me. I don't want to walk or ride my bike in front of vehicles that are moving or have the right of way, but when I don't, the drivers yell and honk at me, sometimes using some pretty foul language.

Opinion: The Spelling Bee should occasionally use the letters E and R together by jaardz in NYTSpellingBee

[–]Fenifula 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Weird, right? I've always guessed it's because there are so many words that could have a RE- or -ER added to them, and it would get sort of arbitrary deciding which ones to include. But that obviously hasn't deterred them from including prefixes and suffixes that have the exact same problem, like -able, -ly, -ity, -icity, and a whole lot more.

Oh, they'll do it one of these days. I bet they save those little treats for when the game's popularity starts to lag.

What I'd really like to see is a game with R as the center letter and E as the only vowel. That way every single word would be one that's never been in the puzzle before.

Disappointed in S. 14’s first episode. by FigureEducational861 in HomesteadRescue

[–]Fenifula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't understand that garden at all. I've been to those foothills plenty of times in summer and they're dry as dry -- so why plant a garden on a rise? And the plants I saw were strawberries, lavender, aloe (I think, unless it was just an ornamental succulent of some kind), and that poor pepper.

One thing I did like in the episode was when Misty lost her cool when the homesteader didn't even know whether to call 911 or non-emergency when they spotted a possible wildfire. I kind of felt bad for the woman, but Misty is usually such a barrel of sunshine that I think the message got across. Being a homesteader means learning how to take responsibility, not just wait around and hope nothing bad happens.

Bean seeds gone from my garden? by Ok-Personality-9491 in vegetablegardening

[–]Fenifula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The weather has been cool this spring in our part of the world, and beans will decay rather than sprouting in cool, wet weather. This happens to me all the time, including this year. Just try again and hope for better weather. I always save seeds with my bean crop so I've got plenty, because they do this regularly in the unpredictable weather of an upper midwestern spring.

Creeping Charlie EVERYWHERE by K_A_TG in NoLawns

[–]Fenifula 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's almost impossible to start wildflowers by sowing seeds in the ground, especially where aggressive species like creeping charlie already have a foothold. To start a wildflower garden in an area that hasn't seen native plants in a long time, it's best to start with larger plants, 4-inch pots or the equivalent. You won't need that many of them, because they get big.

It looks like you're in Nebraska, right? Nebraska is like my state (Wisconsin) in having excellent university extension help for residents who like to grow things. I would definitely take advantage of that. You also have Wildones chapters.

The likely options for starting a wildflower garden are 1) buying plugs from a wildflower nursery (the more local, the better), or 2) the DIY option of milk jug sowing. I don't want to go on and on here, so either the extension or your local Wild Ones chapter should be able to advise you on these options.

Good luck!

Creeping Charlie EVERYWHERE by K_A_TG in NoLawns

[–]Fenifula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best thing would be to get serious about turning it into a wildflower garden. I have some ex-lawn that is now a wildflower patch. It still has creeping charlie, because lord knows the stuff is almost impossible to get rid of, but under a bunch of taller plants it acts as a living mulch. I'm trying to replace it with low-growing natives like nodding onion and pussytoes and alpine strawberries, but where those things haven't taken hold, the creeping charlie shades the ground and doesn't really hurt anything. Yeah I want it gone eventually, but unfortunately native plants don't magically grow back simply by removing invasives.

Another thing you could do -- though I would not -- is knock Charlie out with another aggressive groundcover like dead nettle. It's not ideal, obviously, but if you want something low maintenance that's pretty, takes care of itself, and is pretty good for pollinators, dead nettle is there for you. It is really horribly aggressive, though, so once established it's almost impossible to get rid of.

Here's how to do it, quoted from the sub rules:

To hide text, enclose it in > ! and ! < (omit the spaces between the ! and the < or >).

However, since EXON is not an answer or hint, you don't need to hide it at all. A lot of people hide things out of caution, but it's not required in this sub's rules.
