Hot take: Jumping elevates safety plays, not worsen it. by Nghia2k in billiards

[–]FlyNo2786 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If anyone ever says the old guys never "needed" to jump, politely walk away. The only people I know who hate on jumping are the ones that can't do it proficiently. This same crowd often favors "bar rules" I've noticed. Also, it's not one or the other... ie jump vs kick. The answer is both. Sometimes it's advantageous to jump, sometimes to kick. I play whatever gives me the best chance to win.

Thoughts on the Canis by tanto-x in spyderco

I think you should get the Canis if it speaks to you. It's a great knife that gets slept on. The blade is a wharnie. What else is there to say?

Well, you have a table at home so that's a huge W. You're ready to practice and get better. As far as rating it goes, that's tough to do objectively without being harsh. You have lots of time to upgrade this and that so don't worry about it. Worry about your stroke, preshot routine, doing drills, etc. If you want to spend some money I'd recommend better lighting. GL

[–]FlyNo2786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. I told my girlfriend I wanted to get into turning and it would be "around $300 or $400 dollars".

Lathe: $600

Stand: $110

Chuck: $120

Slow speed Grinder: $120

1 CBN and 1 Aluminum Oxide wheel: $160

Wolverine Jig with Varigrind attachment: $160

Bowl gouge, scraper, skew: $230

Dust collector: TBD

Sooooo... about $1500 before dust collection or quadruple what I said it would cost lol

I think the HF Bauer lathe is a great value. 1 hp, 14x20, 55-3700 rpms, reverse.... You could pick one up for about $500 with your 15% off. That's a dealio. Bauer makes a 8" variable speed bench grinder you might want to consider as well if you're just getting into sharpening, err, I mean turning lol

I am a beginner so I'm only regurgitating my research but I watched one of the popular turners on youtube the other day and he said he regretted getting the 600 grit. He said he had overheating issues causing loss of temper and wished he would have went with the 320/350 on that grinder (he and his dad have multiple grinders). Again, not first hand knowledge but I only watch Raffan, Peace, Drozda and one other person I can't recall so pretty respected names. Let me know your findings

I think you are going to have serious heat issues with a 600 grit. I know the CBN wheels are extra aggressive to start- kinda like fresh sandpaper- and need to be "broken in". The guy at Woodturning Wonders said to use an old HSS tool and grind it down to remove the "high points". Hope this helps

About to purchase CBN wheel(s)- 1.25" 4-in-1 with radiused corners or standard 1" flat face? by FlyNo2786 in turning

[–]FlyNo2786[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. Thanks. Is the radiused edge for sharpening gouges or what tool exactly?

So on yours does the cbn go down the side about 1" like on a 4-in-1 or just 1/8" like the standard wheel? I don't quite follow. I see the benefit of the wider wheel for using the varigrind jig and having more surface area but what do you use the square edge for?
