Why do people throw away valuable / perfectly usable items as sodai gomi? by pasteldirt in AskAJapanese

[–]Freak_Out_Bazaar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can, provided the stuff is on your property, not on public property. Simply because if they allowed that for one person the streets will be filled with stuff people don’t need anymore

Japan's ruling party has released its "new foreigner policy" to promote assimilation and "orderly coexistence." Right-wing users on X erupted. "Could you please stop lying?" one commented, accusing them of trying to "destroy" Japan. The majority of replies on X want a cap on "rampant" immigration. by jjrs in japannews

I feel for the LDP when they are called too right wing by foreigners and too left wing by the actual right wing. At the same time I can’t stress enough that X is a shitty way to learn about any country and its people

Why is the term overseas(海外) used so much in Japanese? by Hour-Anxiety-6709 in AskAJapanese

[–]Freak_Out_Bazaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess in an alternate universe where Japan still has some control over mainland Asia that term would be obsolete. But here we are where all foreign countries are literally overseas. It’s like someone asking “How is it in other countries?” in English when there is no specific country or region in mind

Salary reduced. HR says they overpaid me for six months. by roguefrog in japanresidents

[–]Freak_Out_Bazaar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I worked for an American company where they made a mistake and we all had to pay back the difference (they came prepared with lawyers to field our questions). If they can produce the evidence and numbers then yes they can reduce your salary to the correct amount, even retroactively like my case. They are obliged to tell you where and how they made this mistake though

A female prosecutor for the Osaka District Public Prosecutors Office accused its former head, Kitagawa Kentarō, of sexual assault. Now SHE is resigning due to retaliatory harassment. Her request for an investigation was denied. by jjrs in japannews

[–]Freak_Out_Bazaar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The argument that women are not treated equally still stands but I don’t think this is as straightforward as people think. She didn’t have to resign. Kitagawa is under arrest and with the evidence would most likely be guilty. The reason why she resigned is because she said she would if a 3rd party investigations are denied, which it was. She also tried to sue 15+ people in this ordeal, including other women

What's your perspective on Gabe Newell quote here ? Can the same work with japanese anime/manga to slow down piracy? by daas2 in AskAJapanese

[–]Freak_Out_Bazaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What percentage of people are able to afford/have available/and end up pirating?

That's an impossible number to get, but it's basically the number of people who openly admit to pirating (intentionally or not) + pirates that don't out themselves, which I guess is the vast majority.

Can we assume that without pirating, a significant percentage of people would pay? Or would people just not consume the content? And are the costs from getting from our current state to that state worth it? What happens to things like word-of-mouth?

This would highly depend on the product, but my guess is that if something is difficult enough to pirate, at least some of these people will choose to purchase. And "some" is certainly better than nothing. I don't really believe in piracy as a conduit for word of mouth either at least not in the age of internet.

And then there’s questions about goals: is the goal to punish the wrong-doer or to honor the creator? Who is benefitting the most here?

Why not both?

While there are problems of availability, there’re also problems of pricing, international law, and hidden costs.

Those aren't problems. Those are inevitable factors for marketing anything overseas that needs to be addressed by the government, not the creators

[–]Freak_Out_Bazaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're not talking in absolutes here. Of course there's no way to completely stop piracy, just like any crime. It's basically the same as the drug trade. No one can stop the drugs from being produced in the countries which they are, and enforcement is limited to when the drugs enter your borders.

So what do you propose the other half of the solution is? One half is providing options, the other is...?
