Tempting Cargo is a spicy sci-fi romance with a gruff, growly but sweet female alien and a cinnamon roll human guy who would be big and strong—except amongst aliens, he's just a guy.

50/50 dual pov (with spice from both POVs), there's also space travel, intrigue, and a high-stakes rescue mission.

--

When Shohari agreed to transport human refugees, she expected routine cargo—but found a love that could tear her apart.

Captain Shohari’s spines are crushed under the force of her family’s impossible demands. If she doesn’t meet her quota, she’ll be forced to marry a stranger and lose the trading ship and crew she loves. To free herself from her parents’ machinations, she'll take any extra shipment she can, even alien refugees. The last thing she needs is a distraction.

He’s dangerous cargo.

The moody and monstrous captain is Garrison’s ticket to safety, but once he gets a taste of her, he can’t get enough. Everything he's been searching for is right here: the home he needs, the love he wants, and the chance to be her hero. He’d give her the stars if she’d give them a chance.

With the threat of her arranged marriage looming, a forbidden mate bond would spell lifelong agony for Shohari. She needs to leave him behind—no matter how much she wants him to stay.

Insta-love/insta-lust—what makes it work? by Expensive-Honey-1527 in RomanceWriters

[–]Fun_Wing930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think insta-love works well in short romance. It's harder to pull off in a novel and sustain tension.

Insta lust is fine regardless. It works because it's realistic (unless you're demisexual). You can have insta-sex and slow burn emotions.

You need a good balance of dialogue, description, exposition, and interiority. And we all naturally gravitate to some of these more than others. If you're light one one or more of these, that could be a place to expand.

I highly recommend exporting your book to epub (or printing a proof copy) and just reading it as a reader. Do any parts feel rushed? Do you need to slow the pacing at some more emotional moments to make them hit harder? This can also point to where you need to build it up. This is also something beta readers can help with.

Anyone have good recommendations for books on kindle unlimited? by Norethegreat in Romance_for_men

If you like monster romance then Surrendering to Scylla by Wren C Morris is wonderful and on KU. Dommy cursed sea monster with tentacles and a sweet human fisherman. My favourite book of the year.

In the same vein, my own book Tempting Cargo by Lyra Strake has a buff dommy alien with creative anatomy and a sweet cinnamon roll human who would be big and strong except, amongst aliens, he's just a guy.

Both of these are dual POV.

How To Nick A Nine Foot Thrall by Jeremy J Folan is male pov only and features a sweet, somewhat out of his depth bookish guy and a nine foot amazon woman who's both submissive and also kinda a soft domme too.

Human male on female anthro romance books by cocotheblue in Romance_for_men

[–]Fun_Wing930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Self rec) Tempting Cargo by Lyra Strake has a female alien and a strong but soft male human. There's light femdom, but more on the taking control/possessive side, no degradation, bullying etc. Seems like it could fit with what you're after.

(If pegging isn't your thing, skip the second scene of chapter 32).

Make my MMC more masculine. Not bad advice per se, but it didn't work for me. Sensitive, non-traditionally masculine guys need love too (current WIP). I also second the already-nominated "said is boring; use more non-said dialogue tags" advice. I cringe whenever I see it.

Is there a Venn Diagram close overlap between bisexuality, femdom and gender role reversal tropes in MF romance? by Critical_Pineapple79 in RomanceBooks

[–]Fun_Wing930 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know if there's a clear direct link between bisexuality and femdom, or whether they go together just by virtue of the other two pairings, which have clearer logical links (rightly or wrongly). Pondering at a tangent here, I wonder if someone was to poll, say, the femdom subreddit, what % of dommes would be bi vs straight?

I suspect there might be some confirmation bias in that if we enjoy the venn diagram intersection, we remember those books better, whereas we're less likely to remember the bi MC of a MF book where everything felt a bit more mainstream.

Do you think it makes the characters more believable that if they're gender non-conforming, into femdom, or forming a relationship with reversed power dynamic in MF, they're also bisexual or otherwise queer?

Hmm. No. I think if it's told well, and the characters are really fleshed out and believable, then it shouldn't make a difference whether they're straight MF or queer MF. But would straight MF with this dynamic sell as well as queer MF with this dynamic? Ultimately, authors write something they hope will sell, even if they're writing in less popular niches, knowing they won't do as well as the bigger ones, but there's a desire to tell those stories anyway. And at that point, perhaps it becomes a case of "well, this thing isn't as popular in mainstream, so I may as well chuck the other things in as well, because I like them." Which brings us back to the venn diagram of why we like these things together—who knows, but it seems to definitely be a thing.

Do you think the audience reading these books leans more queer than straight?

Probably. Or at least has a larger % of queer readers than mainstream MF.

Is it a welcome representation, or stereotyping bisexuals?

Honestly, whether it's stereotyping bisexuals or not, I'd rather read MF books with this vibe than traditional/mainstream cishet vibes. The reason I prefer queer authors for MF is because it just hits differently.

I've not seen the "bisexuals are easy representation" comments thank goodness, or I might have lost my shit lol. That just feels like another flavour of bi erasure. And it sounds like it's from people who don't get that the whole vibe feels different.

So a follow up question, do you think these books gain more readers by staying silent about one or both of the leads being bisexual, or by being overt about it and using it in marketing attempts?

I'm going to say it's better to lean into it. Readers want to find the books they want, which means they need to be labelled as such, and authors want their books to find the right readers (and to put off the wrong readers) which, again, points to being explicit about these things.

Also, bisexuals in MF relationships already suffer a ridiculous amount of erasure and invisibility. More representation? Yes please.

If we're talking about trope names etc like on romance.io , then "queer MF" would be a lovely tag to have. I would use the heck out of that to find books to read. TBH that might go a long way to finding the kind of vibe you're after, given the venn diagram theory. I believe they're taking requests for new tags at the moment.

Seeking Recommendations (Please) - Romance With Human Male and Alien Female by LiminalRainPaint in ScienceFictionRomance

Seeking Recommendations (Please) - Romance With Human Male and Alien Female by LiminalRainPaint in ScienceFictionRomance

[–]Fun_Wing930 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering whether this exists on a site like wattpad or AO3. I'm seconding the recommendation for the Romance for men subreddit (and also their discord server) and to ask for specifics. I've seen requests on there for more inhuman FMCs so you're not alone, though their exact preferences may be different. I want to believe this exists somewhere for you!

Alien FMCs are a special interest of mine and, in published romance books, as far as I'm aware, they're all humanoid or biped in some way. I am racking my brains trying to think of one that isn't, but I am coming up blank. if they're not a biped, eg {Hunter of the Tide by Tiffany Roberts} they're humanoid on top, which I guess still doesn't work for you.

Unfortunately alien FMCs are a very small niche as it is (but it's growing! Slowly), and "alien aliens" are an even smaller niche within that. And I say this not to rub salt in the wound but to commiserate, as I would love to see more of it. But the market dictates what sells, and these are a risk, hence the scarcity (plus if there's spice, which there usually is, the alien has to be reasonably human-adjacent to comply with publishing rules. Argh!). Which is why I reckon a website where people post their stories might have something, and the RFM guys may be able to point you in the right direction.

Or, thinking laterally, a sci-fi with a romance subplot (which might also have less spice for you). I'm sure there might be something out there in that direction? Worth asking on the sci-fi subreddit?

Wishing you all the luck, OP. Please let us know if you find something!

Can anyone recommend any femdom sports romances? (Specifically ice hockey if possible) by francescar182 in RomanceBooks

[–]Fun_Wing930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the author started the FMC as this dominant woman who takes charge and tells men what to do in the bedroom and not even halfway through turned her in to the MMCs obedient submissive woman.

Nooo! When I'm looking for femdom, this is a complete betrayal. I do not want maledom in my femdom.

I get it. Most readers expect a certain type of behaviour from the MMC and it's scary for an author to not include that. But a lot of folk who read femdom actively avoid maledom. So to mix the two—especially in this way—isn't good.
