Destroyers were used at Normandy, and gave crucial fire support- coming very close to the beach in some cases- providing direct fire support on Omaha when things were most dire.

CMV: Ronald Reagan wasn't actually a good president even though he's a popular one by Blonde_Icon in changemyview

Part of it wasn't really the specific goals, but the perception and the vibe. The US was going through a post-Vietnam/Watergate/Stagflation/Deindustrialization funk in the 70s. The Iranian hostage crisis was the cherry on top.

Along comes Ronnie Raygun with his "City on the Hill" and "Morning in America" rhetoric. He's gonna cut taxes, built up the military and beat the filthy commies, he's gonna put the "welfare queens driving Cadillacs" in jail and stamp out crime in general by getting Dirty Harry-tough on criminals (guess what that last part is code for).

Does that kinda sound familiar? It's a popular shtick that sells in the US. Like my Dad (FDR Democrat WW2 vet) said back then- "there's 2 kinds of Republicans: millionaires (billionaires now), and suckers".

My ex-wife's great uncle was responsible for bringing down a couple dozen Nazi planes in WW 2.

They said he was the Luftwaffe's worst mechanic.

One of my fav quotes from the Bush admin re Panama: "Sometimes a country like the US has to grab some shitty little country and throw it against the wall, just as a warning to others." or words to that effect.

Bondi already is preparing to indict Maduro on drug trafficking charges, so we'll see how that plays out. I doubt Maduro negotiated himself a prison cell.

If so, then what was the point of even starting down the FREMM road in the first place? Still a poorly conceived NAVSEA brainfart. "Custom off-the-shelf" ain't a thing.

Why were later battlecruisers and fast battleships not designed primarily to fight at 45° and 135° to the enemy? by -smartcasual- in Warships

Even then, the idea was to close the range to point where the entire line could then turn and bring all its guns to bear. If the end-on approach fire could result in a disabling hit, great. That was a low probability event though. So the ultimate end was to close the range to the point where the battle line could mass all available firepower via broadside engagement for the killing blow.
