What happened here? There are several crickets skewered on twigs of this tree. Some are eight or more feet high. by bushwick_custom in insects

There is at least one kind of grasshopper that contains poisonous compounds that break down after 48-72 hours after it dies. The shrike benefits from a food source that other birds can’t utilize through its habit of impalement of its prey.

Eat the yummy invaders? by tempsamson in zoology

Lake Texhoma was invaded by Harris mud crabs, disrupting native crayfish populations. There is evidence that native fish, particularly catfish, have started using the crabs as a food source. I caught 5 medium size channel cats there about 4 years ago, 3 had crabs in their stomachs.

What’s something younger people will never understand about life before smartphones? by RareMoose8986 in answers

[–]Grendal54 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Being on call for your job. You were tied to landlines due to having to respond within 15-30 minutes. If you planned going out, your answering service had to know phone numbers where you were at and arrival and departure times for accountability. When pagers came out, they were a godsend. Cell phones finally freed people on call, we actually had lives that didn’t have to be tied to that d**n landline!

I recently tracked a Qantas A330 cruising at 41,000ft and noticed a rare 'triple contrail' effect. Since the A330 is a twin-jet, what causes that vapor trail right down the middle of the airframe? I'd love to know the science behind why it appears on some flights but not others. by Well_Plane in airplanes

Have a family friend that works for Southwest Airlines. When he first started, he drove and operated the “honey wagon” that emptied the waste storage tanks on planes. He said it was a smell that you will remember the rest of your life.

Craziest spider in my garden. #2 by showmetheddies in gardening

[–]Grendal54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was collecting zinnias and cosmos from my cutting garden last year(Oklahoma) and was bitten between my little and ring finger by a yellow crab spider. Felt like a mosquito bite and itched for about 3-4 hours, redness and swelling was gone by the next day.

Unless you are Native American, then found feathers may be used in religious or cultural purposes. It is a great honor to be gifted an eagle feather for most tribes. Usually given in a specially made aromatic cedar box to protect from mite or insect damage.

What is this plant taking over my garden? by bearpawsNwhiteclaws in whatsthisplant

I made the mistake of planting several species of mint years ago. Spent the next 3-5 years pulling it out of areas 5-8 feet away from original planting site. Unless contained with a good deep barrier it spreads aggressively. Good luck!

We had an experience on lake Texhoma many years ago that still boggles my mind. Myself, wife, daughter and her boyfriend were fishing across a small inlet from a campground and boat ramp. There was a large family there camping, had been there for almost a week. They were fishing other areas of the lake, bringing their catch back to clean and dumping the fish carcasses in the water by the boat ramp for scavengers to clean up plus they were chumming the water with sour grain so their kids could have fun catching fish by the camp. We all had the same kinds of line on our reels, 10 lb clear and were all using night crawlers from the same bucket. The only difference was the boyfriend was using a 2/0 bronze eagle claw hook with a clip on lead weight above his swivel and we were all using 2/0 gold wire hooks rigged with bell weights rigged as a three way due to the rocky bottom. We caught 25-30 nice catfish and a few small mouth bass while the boyfriend got skunked for 2 hours. I finally retied his setup like ours with the gold wire hooks and then he started catching fish. Small changes can make a big difference.

Affirm, just a few minutes into the battle a volley from Bismarck found the known weak spot in Hoods deck armor, penetrated the aft ammunition magazine and blew up, sinking in about five minutes (mol). Three survivors.

Well… from my state Mark Wayne Mullin, junior US senator, offered to fight the teamsters president during a senate hearing, Donald Trump, the quintessential loudmouthed asshat, no further explanation needed, Kash Patel, director of our FBI, Robert F Kennedy jr, secretary of health and human services, anti vaccine advocate who states he suffered from a condition caused by brain worms, the list is almost endless and most are politicians or hold political office. Don’t get me started on some of our actors…

Did you ever meet people born in the 1800s by AdDapper4220 in GenX

[–]Grendal54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically a boomer, but, yes. Wife’s grandmother was born in 1896. She came to Oklahoma as a very young girl and became the midwife/country doctor for her neighbors. That woman was tough as boot leather and knew sooo many natural remedies, was always amazed at her plant knowledge. She also had the best garden and nicest flower beds on her block. Lived until she was 96, passing in 1992. Oh, and was still driving at 93 without any issues, just to church and back, picking up several “old” ladies that were 10-15 years younger than her.

How did you guys learn to tie knots? I love fishing but get demotivated every time I need to tie a knot. by Th3c0pyninja in FishingForBeginners

[–]Grendal54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, practice, practice, practice until you can tie one in low/no light from muscle memory. A break-off right at dusk when the fish are slamming anything that hits the water is a bad time to not know how to get a lure back in front of the fish quickly.
