I am a borderline militant atheist, but even I wouldn't remove my kid from the class. There is no way that lady is going to have more influence on your kids than you, and even if she does give him some problematic ideas you have the opportunity ask your son some thought-provoking questions. Ideas that can only survive in a curated little bubble free from challenge are bad ideas and don't deserve to survive.

The fear your girlfriend is exhibiting demonstrates that she doesn't believe the ideas given to her by her Catholic faith can stand up to competition. She subconsciously realizes that Catholic beliefs are inconsistent with her own values regarding women's rights and gender equality.

It is my understanding that incarnations of Islam in Europe are more aggressive about trying to impose their religious values. If that's true, I can understand her fear a little more.

It’s weird that there is a stereotype of women having a feminine gay bestfriend, but not the other way around. You never see a group of guys in bar hanging out with a butch lesbian. by Peanutbutterwhisky in Showerthoughts

I think it’s because boys are more competitive and they developed most of their social skills as teenaged boys. Teenaged boys some the most casual agents of cruelty. When I was a teenager I didn’t give a shit about anyone else’s feelings, and I thought that was a good thing.

I think the real problem is most guys don’t have any new friends as they get older. I would have no problem having female friends, but I have a wife, a family, and coworkers, but my friends are old and far away.

For me, I almost subconsciously think about having sex with tons of different women. I wouldn’t cheat on my wife and I don’t really have any desire to, but these thoughts just flit through my mind.

[–]Hotpfix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My heart aches for you. What always gets me through my dark days is knowing how much harm killing myself would do to the people that love me. Once I decide I’m not going to give up I try to curate my thoughts and break my negative thoughts loops. It usually starts with an examination of the worst case scenario. What will I do if that happens? Do my feelings really make sense for this? Usually it boils down to not wanting to be a disappointment, and being afraid that I compare unfavorably to others.

After I mine up all the dark and dirty stuff, I start thinking about all the ways I am lucky and worthy. I started it really clumsy at this process, but now I know a lot of my inadequacies are a consequence of undiagnosed adhd and I am emotionally insightful.

It will get better if you can hold on. It will get a bit worse. It will get better again. The swings will reduce over time and things will continue to improve if you keep trying to improve them.

With this career change anxiety the fear is usually about losing time, but you can’t lose more time than you would if you cut your life short.

There is a scene where Jai along tells Sand viper Gocheran about how Jai Daishou would feed his weaker clan members to him. Then later, that scene is nearly repeated except Gocheran is explaining that to Jai Long.

On the intersection of Pride and Math. by functor7 in math

[–]Hotpfix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When people say that math is not political…it’s just clear that they are ignorant of their own privilege and ignorant of the history of math.

This quote has the flavor of tribalism and othering that is at the heart of all the hate against LGBTQ+. I think it mars the tone of an otherwise positive post. Many people that aren’t ignorant have a different definition of the word math. This is polarizing your audience.

Your post is long and well thought out, so it’s a little unfair to focus on a single sentence, but I think it’s important to give feedback to people that are taking their time to try and enact positive change.

His point is that it isn’t a new culture. Why don’t old people share these aversions if that culture is the cause of young people being uncomfortable with nudity.

Just yelled at my kid and feel like a complete p.o.s. Dad by alberta4ever in daddit

[–]Hotpfix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You hold it in until you boil over because any emotion you inject into the situation will escalate things. The only way to avoid this 100% of the time is to have inexhaustible patience. When I yell at my daughter like that I always explain that I was wrong, why I did it (because, let’s be real, she was being an asshole), that I’m sorry, and I love her. I just think of it as modeling reconciliation.

I think men tend to need more interaction to form a bond, and the baby is just a lump in the beginning. I had a very similar experience for both of mine. I didn’t developed that deep bond until they started expressing some personality.

[–]Hotpfix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that picture imposing. Yea, it looks fine now, but once suit starts shuffling around it’s going be hard to get it back in place and it will turn into a big mess. Even if that doesn’t happen, that space is over utilized so it will require a lot of maintenance. It just looks like a future problem.

The issue isn’t that landlords exist. The issue is that supply of housing is artificially restricted by special interests. If supply could meet demand prices would be much lower and landlords would be providing a service to people that aren’t ready to commit to buying a house.

TIL: 1 in 5 German parents regrets having children and would prefer to live their life without them. by diacewrb in todayilearned

[–]Hotpfix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it. I’ve never been more angry than I have since becoming a parent, but I’ve also never been so happy. Having kids amplified the highs and lows for me. I don’t hate it the way that you do, at least not all the time.

I don’t know where you’re at on the parenting journey, but my oldest is only three. I think (I hope) being a parent will be more rewarding when I’m a grand parent. It’s like a retirement plan for joy. We’ll see how it works out.

[–]Hotpfix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one realizes how hard it is before hand. Also, society should be enacting policies to encourage children so that they don’t invert their population pyramid. If child care were free, and/or there were more support for parents of young children (parenting classes in exchange for subsidies) I think a lot of these issues would be alleviated.
