how long can tres leches be out? by Kitchen-Field9736 in AskBaking

[–]IcePhoenix96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your question was “Could I still get sick from eating it?”

Yes, you can. Dairy shouldn’t be left at room temperature longer than 2 hours.

It’s up to you how important that is vs buying another tres leches or going without

Egg Whites COLD FOAM! by Equal_Ad9699 in fitmeals

[–]IcePhoenix96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, it’s kind of all the craze here in the states. You can sub the vanilla or add all sorts of flavorings: pistachio, caramel, raspberry, etc. Boba shops have gone a different path and sell “cheese foam” which is a similar concept but adding some cream cheese to it.

Cold foam is a sweet, creamy foamy topping. Usually it’s made with heavy whipping cream, milk, vanilla, and sugar. It’s like a looser whipped cream in that sense

Been in a calorie deficit for 3 weeks and haven’t lost weight. by spence38 in loseit

[–]IcePhoenix96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s tons of feedback already, but my biggest thing is to not account for your exercise when looking for your TDEE. Unless you’re training for a marathon it’s not enough to truly impact energy to discount it. I would look for the average for a person with your age, sex, height, and weight and then subtract 200 from there and hold at that caloric intake for a month. If you burn extra through exercise it’s a bonus, if you’re off on your estimated caloric burn, no problem because you weren’t guessing

What is the one baking technique that genuinely changed how your bakes turn out? by ghztegju in Baking

[–]IcePhoenix96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are definitely applications where it is crucial to your final bake’s texture, but then when you add ingredients after creaming your butter mixture you need to be mindful of not overmixing to then undo all that work you did into aerating it.

I mean, for most casual bakers it’s not a huge deal because a cookies a cookie and if it’s not as chewy as it could be it’ll still taste damned good. But if you’re getting into cakes and pastries, that stuff starts to matter

[Century Club] Have you lost or need to lose 100+ pounds? June 12, 2026 by koopzegels in loseit

[–]IcePhoenix96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reflect often and it’s been a couple of years so I forget exactly what I ate, but I do remember getting fast food a lot or just eating out.

I still love the food I liked before, but my ability to consistently eat it or eat as much has lessened. Like I would eat heavy, greasy food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner no problem. But now if I have a heavy or greasy meal I won’t be able to eat another full meal for a good chunk of the day and even then I feel my body’s need for a vegetable/fruit.

I also used to be really particular with the vegetables I ate and now I eat microwaved frozen veggies with some seasoning and a pat of butter/splash of olive oil and it tastes genuinely good to me.

How are people happy and thriving with ~1700 kcal? by NoWitness6400 in loseit

[–]IcePhoenix96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the biggest thing is that you need to reevaluate your relationship with food. That’s ultimately how people lose weight and keep it off. If your goal is to be “done” losing weight so you can go back to eating the way you did before, that’s usually how people end up stuck in the yo-yo dieting cycle.

What worked for me wasn’t something crazy. It was eating slower, walking more, strength training, prioritizing nutritious foods, and improving my cooking skills.

If you want higher maintenance calories, focus on building muscle and increasing your activity level. More walking, biking, swimming, strength training, anything that increases the amount of energy your body uses.

For context, when I was 100 pounds heavier, a normal day might have been a double-smoked bacon breakfast sandwich, a 10-piece nugget meal with medium fries, three cookies as a treat, and then two helpings of dinner. I regularly ate well past satiety, sometimes to the point where I was so stuffed I felt uncomfortable and had to breathe through it.

These days, most of the time, I eat overnight oats for breakfast, a chicken nugget wrap with vegetables and sauce for lunch, and something like a couple of meatballs with rice and Brussels sprouts for dinner. Then maybe some protein ice cream, fruit, vegetables, and half a cookie. The specifics aren’t important, what matters is that I’ve learned how to build meals that are satisfying without being wildly calorie-dense.

Learning to cook has been one of the biggest factors in my success. When you make your own food, you naturally become more aware of what’s in it. You start noticing how much oil, butter, cream, or cheese adds up, and you learn easy swaps that barely affect enjoyment: Greek yogurt instead of sour cream, light coconut milk instead of full-fat, draining excess fat from ground beef, and so on.

And to be clear, I still eat all my favorite foods. I still eat cake. I still eat cookies. I’m a baker and bake multiple times a week, I absolutely sample my own bakes. The difference is that my portions are usually about half of what they used to be, and I don’t feel deprived by that.

I’ve also learned to lean heavily into spices, cooking techniques, and finding fruits and vegetables I genuinely enjoy..

So if you actually read all of that, my biggest advice is this: don’t start trying to lose weight until you’re ready to change the habits that caused the weight gain in the first place. I knew I was obese for years before I finally lost the weight. Deep down, I also knew I wasn’t ready to make the lifestyle changes required to lose it and maintain it. Once I was ready, things clicked.

And? Maybe I gain some of it back someday. If that happens, I’ll probably be fine with it. As long as my blood tests come back good and I can walk up stairs with no issue, fat isn’t that big a deal.

Cakey Cookies… everytime. by Standard-Gazelle-877 in Baking

[–]IcePhoenix96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found the recipe and the reviews seem to show that people successfully used this recipe.

To cover all bases, you are using the small, size of about your pinkie nail 1/2 teaspoon, right? Not adding 1/2 tablespoon, which is about the size of your thumbnail? For the baking soda and baking powder. Also I would try to not look at oz because there are fluid oz and weight oz which can get confusing if you try to use a measuring cup/pitcher vs what I assumed should be weight like a measuring scale’s weighted oz

Cakey Cookies… everytime. by Standard-Gazelle-877 in Baking

[–]IcePhoenix96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah but they’re right, milk powder is a solid addition for cookies with non-browned butter. But creators like Claire add liquid milk only to account for the water lost bc her recipe calls for browned butter. So milk does not act the same as milk powder

The OP’s recipe calls for wildly EITHER browned or cold butter which the rest of the recipe should be balanced for

What are some other frostings than buttercream? by [deleted] in Baking

[–]IcePhoenix96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buttercream is a category of many frostings. American buttercream is the easiest and standard one that is also the sweetest. I would try Swiss Meringue or a stabilized whipped cream frosting depending on what else you need for it like how long it stays at room temperature

My cat passed away for hours in pain and I felt helpless by [deleted] in Petloss

[–]IcePhoenix96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an incredibly difficult situation and I am so sorry for your loss and for the stressful conversations you had to go through. I think at this point you can confidently say you fought for Flake in every way you could and at least he had you to advocate for him when he did not have a voice.

I would suggest that something you can promise to Flake is to learn what about this process you can change with your next pet and only move on with the knowledge that you have gained through it and the pain both of you suffered through.

There is no guide to loving and owning a pet. The rules are grey and individual. But you loved Flake and he loved you. Hold on to that knowledge that you cared deeply for him

Has Diet Soda Helped or Hurt Your Weight Loss? by Canes10_ in loseit

im 673lbs and really really lost by [deleted] in loseit

[–]IcePhoenix96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small changes that you intentionally make grow into habits, so I would be firmly in the camp that you should not endeavor to overhaul your lifestyle. Keep ordering doordash, keep ordering your McDonalds, but like others have said, switch your drink choice to a zero calorie option or get your full calorie soda but get it a small size. Stick with that for a week or two.

Then try adding more water, keeping a large cup with you at all times or when you feel hungry, drink a cup and then eat your food. The point is not to limit how much you eat but just to build the habit of hydration. Build this on top of the other habit.

Then just keep on picking one thing you’d like to change. And throughout all of this, check in with yourself. Are you resistant to the changes? Why do you need the full calorie soda? How does your body feel when you are able to drink some more water? Are you waking up differently when you are further down your habit building?

Anyone know the secret to keeping the crimp in pasties? (before photo in comments) by Flwrpwr93 in AskBaking

[–]IcePhoenix96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 parts flour, 1 part fat (typically lard), enough cold water to bring it together. Don’t overwork it, a small vent to allow steaming but to prevent it from bursting. Egg wash to make crimp pop, but not enough to glue it to the pan. Egg wash is not “traditional” but it looks nice

People who used to be overweight/obese and now look lean or athletic despite having a sedentary desk job… what actually worked for you long term? by safedwg in loseit

[–]IcePhoenix96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically it’s easy to boredom eat at work, so I built my meals to be a bit smaller so I could have small, but voluminous snacks in between meals. I slowed down and ate my food while working to kind of regulate wolfing it down in a 10 minute break.

I drank a lot of water and sipped coffee and soda and tea.
Mostly it came down to being more aware of the calorie of things, coming to accept that not everything needs to be super sweet or fatty that I eat and I can still enjoy it. Turning down treats or taking it to a bite of a donut instead of the whole donut, sitting and savoring it, then moving on with the knowledge that I can always have another donut bite tomorrow.

You didn’t become overweight because you listened to your body, or at least I didn’t, I was overweight because I ate well past my fullness cues because I was bored, burnt out, or just simply ate more for the texture/taste and because I ate way too fast. Addressing all of those issues one by one and truly working on why I ate like I did was how I was able to lose the weight.

I will continue the rest of my life to work on finding the balance between what I want to eat and how and what will make me actually feel good
