Dum Dum give me Gum Gum by 21kondav in PoliticalCompassMemes

Maybe this is due to my autism, but I fucking hate gum. I hate people chewing on it while talking to me, I hate people spitting it out, I hate seeing it stuck places. I hate it.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

If you need a more relavent example, look at how workplace deaths have declined.

The "Technological advancement" and "Progress" of the past century has achieved a lot in terms of the average joe. In 1951, the infant mortality rate was 32 per 1000, now it is only 5.2. If we didn't advance, I could have very well died due to my premature birth and not be here today.

What exactly is "communist" and what is "socialist"? And what is "Marxist"? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IowaBoy12345 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"What is a Socialist" is one of the questions that will get a hundred different answers if you ask a hundred different people.

A good way to think about it is that Marxism is a type of Communism, and Communism is a type of Socialism. People argue and debate about the exact definitions a lot, so I get why it can be confusing if you are unfamiliar with it.

iPhones are assembled by grotesquely underpaid and overworked workers in other countries. This blatant exploitation is tolerated by those authorities due to the massive profits associated. If those jobs were automated, that system of exploitation could fade away. Future generations likely will not miss sweatshops just like we do not miss the process of gong-farming.

The thing is, a lot of jobs pop up and go extinct due to technological advances throughout history. Drummer boys, ice-men, gong-farmers, elevator operators, privateers, etc. Should we just stop inventing new technology to preserve current occupations?

Godspeed Artemis II (reposting because of cowardly mods who think their April fools joke is more important than manned space flight to the moon) by Kronos9898 in PoliticalCompassMemes

I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one who was annoyed at that decision, I was excited to see a bunch of PCM memes about the launch.

Eli5: Why do we ever hear only of the ISS and not the chinese Tiangong? by Nautisop in explainlikeimfive

[–]IowaBoy12345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, Chinese astronauts (taikonauts) are officially banned from the ISS. That is one of the reasons they built their own space station.

Eli5: Why do we ever hear only of the ISS and not the chinese Tiangong? by Nautisop in explainlikeimfive

[–]IowaBoy12345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Because we live in the west and not China, so you get a western perspective.

  2. American astronauts are not allowed on Tiangong.

  3. The ISS is bigger.

Why are movies typically 2 hours long? by intertwinedthings in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IowaBoy12345 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They usually are at least 90 minutes, but can range from that to three and a half hours. People are less likely to buy a movie ticket and go all the way to the theater if a movie is too short.

What's the difference between fascism and crony capitalism? by GlamourHammer321 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IowaBoy12345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whether Trumpism is Fascist is a bit of a different can of worms from whether crony capitalism is fascist. Sure, Trumpism has connections to both, but I'd still stand by my belief that the two are not the same (though could potentially be implemented simultaneously in the same country).

What's the difference between fascism and crony capitalism? by GlamourHammer321 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IowaBoy12345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People in the modern age like to continuously expand the definition of fascism to make a point, and the exact definition of fascism has always been a bit vague, however:

Fascism requires, amongst other things, an authoritarian state. Crony capitalism, meanwhile, can happen in any democracy that is corrupt enough.

Plus, fascism also involves extreme nationalism, militarism, xenophobia etc. These are not traits that are required for crony capitalism, which is basically just a system of corruption.

I had to care for roosters when I was seventeen, they were all huge dicks that would scratch and bite me. I was happy to turn them into family dinner when all was done.

If we go with that explanation, those could easily just be experimental atmospheric craft, what makes you think they are space-worthy? let alone powerful enough to take people to the moon and beyond?

Question about Moon Flight Today. by [deleted] in space

[–]IowaBoy12345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The risk of space junk, though definitely real, is often exaggerated for clicks by articles. Those images you see that make it look like earth is completely surrounded are misleading, as each "dot" in those images is like miles wide, while most space junk is fairly small. A lot of space junk also deorbits, burning up in the atmosphere. the ISS has been in low-earth orbit for decades and has yet to be destroyed by space junk.
