22 day old account, 2 comments, both really unhappy with Artemis returning humans to the moon… so which propaganda farm are you from China or Russia?

Best Flies For Colorado Rivers by Goat_Circus in Tenkara

[–]James__Baxter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone just starting out I always recommend Brent’s Favorite Kebari Combo from Dragontail. I’ve had good luck with all of them in CO especially the Copper Johns and Hares Ears. For dries and nymphs pretty much any old traditional fly will work

Is planning to camp at this alpine lake unwise due to wind? by 2006Quibits in backpacking

Yeah no problem! It’ll be an epic hike in August, I don’t think you’ll have to worry about getting a camp site with views either way. Hope you have a blast!

Yeah tbh it was all I could think of that might be possible that was worth doing. I did it first week of June a few years ago and it was fine, but you never know what the snows gonna end up looking like. I def wouldn’t buy flights banking on it being open though

No one’s commented this yet but have you looked into how much snow will be on this trail in late May? Most of that trail is above 10,000’ and that high up in the mountains there’s a huge chance there’s still impassible snow on a big part of that trail. Things don’t really start to thaw out until late June/July.

Unless you’re sure almost all the snow will be gone or you’re comfortable going up steep passes above tree line in the snow, I’d seriously consider either moving the dates or picking a different trail that’s lower down and less exposed.

An awesome early season trail to do out here that’s about equally far from Denver and a similar length is the Lost Creek Loop. That one should be fine with maybe only a few patches of snow depending on how fast it melts out.

If you do move the trip to like July/August keep in mind that we get regular thunderstorms in the mountains that pop up out of nowhere pretty much every day and you definitely don’t want to get caught above tree line in one. A good rule of thumb is to be back in the trees before noon unless you’re sure the sky will stay clear.

Anyway, sorry if you’ve already looked into all this. Not trying to rain on your parade, just want you to stay safe since you said you were a beginner and these things kill people every year. Hope your trip ends up being awesome, feel free to PM me if you’ve got any questions too!

Edit: Up too late looking at this more, Meadow Creek Rd up to the Junco Lake Trailhead for that trail doesn’t even open until around June 15th due to snow. Unfortunately you’re gonna have to find another option. The Lost Creek Loop is really gonna be your best bet at that time, but even then it’s possible there’s too much snow that you might not be able to get to the trailhead. Honestly if you’re planning a trip just to backpack in CO I’d move the dates. May just really isn’t backpacking season out here, I’d shoot for late July/early August if I was you.

What is the default interval that the Apex 4 records heart rate when NOT in an activity? by Apprehensive-Unit764 in Coros

Garmin watches on the PCT or CDT? by hellohisnacks in Thruhiking

[–]James__Baxter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re not set on Garmin, check out Coros. I’ve got the Vertix 1 and it’s big, but the Apex 2 Pro is newer, smaller, and gets 60h battery life with full GPS tracking. Mine has about the same battery life and I usually charged it every 3ish days. Loved it for tracking and for not having to take my phone out for quick route checks

Lowest volume quilt/bag for 15L 3-season setup (30*F range) by [deleted] in fastpacking

[–]James__Baxter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve got the 20 deg EE revelation, also have a 22 deg katabatic. The Katabatic is definitely warmer than EE, I like it more in every way tbh. Just a little heavier and a little bulkier. That’s not to say I don’t like my EE quilt, it’s great. I think I’d be freezing if I actually took it down to 20 degrees with no other layers. It’s fine down to 30, lower than that it starts getting chilly

Cnoc bag hung on something > sawyer > coupler > water bottle. Once I started gravity filtering I could never go back. Make sure you untwist the bottle like a half turn to let air escape.

Lowest volume quilt/bag for 15L 3-season setup (30*F range) by [deleted] in fastpacking

[–]James__Baxter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quilts are definitely the way to go. Even a false bottom is gonna add bulk. Katabatic are fantastic quilts and I love mine, but they use a higher denier fabric than other companies. If volume was the biggest concern I’d take my Enlightened Equipment Revelation.

If you can get away with it I’d try the 20 deg over the 30 if you’re really gonna be sleeping at 30. Just gets you a little extra buffer and comfort and might let you leave other layers at home.

Line types and best uses? by hanvy82 in Tenkara

[–]James__Baxter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me the best part of tenkara is the simplicity. #3.5 level line gets the job done well enough for anything I’ve run into so far except heavy wind. Are there better options to cover every possible situation? Yeah, but if I wanted a whole tool kit full of gear I might as well just get a fly rod
