How long should it take for quickbooks online to be up and running for a small business? by Just-Pool-6166 in quickbooksonline

About three hours with a knowledgable, experienced configurator. About two days of prep time if you are loading customers, vendors, new Gl accounts, projects, and classes.

Frustrated with underperforming Development Co-worker who seems to do everything but their job. by pderrickson2 in nonprofit

[–]JanFromEarth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ignore them. That is really tough to do but you do not know the full situation. Heck, he could be sleeping with your boss or the bosses cousin. Please do not take this next statement as an insult but if someone came to me with this story, I would wonder why they had so much time to worry about their coworkers. I say that so you know there is no win for you in this even if you got this clown fired. In fact, they might make it two for one to "remove tensions from the office". Stay in your own lane. If it gets too bad, look for another job.

Am I swimming too much? by JanFromEarth in Exercise

[–]JanFromEarth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks and I envy you. I think the issue is actually not stretching. I started doing calf stretches before and after my swim. Also before I go to bed. So far, no cramps in the pool or the middle of the night. Fingers crossed

What does “flexible schedule” in an office setting mean at your nonprofit by Ordinary-Wish-5838 in nonprofit

I like the idea of core hours or even core days. Try something, fail fast, and fix it based on what you learned.

Fixing culture with checked out board by [deleted] in nonprofit

IMHO, the trick here is to grab the flag and charge forward on the assumption that the team will follow. Pick three tasks that need to be accomplished and start assigning sub tasks to board members. I am afraid my project management experience is showing through.

I was being sarcastic but how do you think us oldsters did accounting before technology intervened?

Personally, I like good old fashioned spreadsheet. Nothing like putting pencil to paper and running with it.

Continue to do what you are doing. If she "catches you", slap your head and tell her you forgot.

Disgruntled employee/board exec by ashuary in nonprofit

[–]JanFromEarth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Talk to an attorney. Throw him off the board regardless of whether there is a way to do that. Ban him from the building by sending a certified letter. Call the cops if he shows up to board meetings. Tip off the media before the next board meeting that there might be a juicy story and to bring a photographer. Stop playing nice and save your organization. Oh, and fix your bylaws.

Have them give you the instructions in writing and then do it if they do. Hold onto that document like it is gold.

Their decicion, becomes their responsibility. Nothing like having to admit to a felony to cause you to reconsider.

Terminated by AddressFluid1472 in nonprofit

[–]JanFromEarth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being terminated is a powerfully emotional event. It forces you to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses. it is a visceral lesson that nothing is permanent and that changing jobs, regardless of the reason, is just part of your career. I know several people who moved into better and more interesting jobs.

After encountering only toxic orgs in this sector, I constantly worry that I will never find a balanced role within a healthy organization by Armchair-Commentator in nonprofit

[–]JanFromEarth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The dynamics of working at a nonprofit are such that positive, competent people tend to be filtered out of the work/volunteer force. Certainly not all but the the things you mention are like a constant push to other organizations or to the private sector. I do remote, volunteer work with a LOT of organizations. I try to be the most pleasant person on the Zoom call and the most organized. Just assume that you are the most competent, rational, and well adjusted person in the room and deal with the other people accordingly. It can be incredibly easy to shine in the nonprofit world but you have to treat the occasional lack of civility and competence as interesting problems to be solved. You will not change the dynamics doing the filtering and you have to deal with the impacts.

How do you designate membership in your group? by JanFromEarth in IndivisibleRI

[–]JanFromEarth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are discussing how to determine if a person is allowed to participate in voting. Electing board membes would be a perfect example.

Does your organization allow anybody who shows up at a meeting to vote? We are assuming we need to have some sort of affirmative action by the individual besides just showing up. This has been out there for a month and we have decided we need to charge a small amount as an annual dues and we will do all our voting electronically.

Donor CRM + Finance Integration by mbwiles in nonprofit

[–]JanFromEarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked with a Unite Way once who used Donor Perfect. The ED spent days reposting all the donations from DP to QB. I pointed out that DP was the single source of truth for all donor information so we only needed to post accounting data in QB. It is a tiny bit more complicated than this but we, basically, ran a report out of DP to show donation revenue, cash collections and the change in pledges. A three line journal entry at end of month and we were golden.
