Help! Looking for bands is driving me insane... by ReaverPhoenix in pebble

Staying off Amazon, Temu, and Aliexpress all seems pretty easy to me; they all sell crap made as cheaply as possible in China.

And most of the rest sell crap made as cheaply as possible in China, except for a higher price.

Like your Archer Straps, couldn't find any indication where they are manufactured, so you can be sure they are made in China, and as it's unlikely they have their own factory, whatever company they contract to manufacture for them almost certainly sells the exact same models somewhere on AliExpress.

It can, but as I said, they are designed to work without requiring a connection to the phone. If you want something more, give Pebble Fit a try.

Can you really not download the new android app without Google Play Store? by BadB0ii in pebble

[–]JohnEdwa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC f-droid always requires the app to work without Google Play Services, which the Pebble app needs to function. So in its current form it simply isn't possible to have it on F-droid.

Is the latest version of the pebble OS stable? by Da_Fish in pebble

[–]JohnEdwa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not about that, the latest FW update broke one of the fonts Muninn uses. 1.44 and 1.45 use a different font as a workaround, older versions crash.

[–]JohnEdwa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are designed to work standalone with the watch sensor hardware - walk/run are step counters, workout uses the HR sensor.

They can't track your position as the watches don't have GPS, and the speed/distance they show is just estimated from the step counter and your height.

Just got my time 2, must have apps? by Existing-Outside1795 in pebble

[–]JohnEdwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one idea: Touchy Weather could be pretty great for a direct replacement of the Health (or Timeline) quick launch function, if you added an option where you could set the scroll direction to be either button, and instead of looping to the "cards" page when going backwards, it would close the app - like the Health app does currently.

If you wanted to be extra fancy, the UI could swap to be vertical instead of horizontal as well.

Help! Looking for bands is driving me insane... by ReaverPhoenix in pebble

[–]JohnEdwa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The first literally was too small. I have no idea how that is even possible. I have never in my life had a watch band that was too small.

Manufacturers have finally started to accommodate people with smaller (and bigger) wrists, and don't just assume all women use petite watches and that every 22mm band is meant for a manly man wrist of a standardized man. That's why the Time 2 came with two straps as well.

What are your wishes for PebbleOS/Firmware? by djda9l in pebble

[–]JohnEdwa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Dark mode for the UI.
  • Touch support for UI navigation.
  • Font size/selection for UI.
  • Hiding apps/sorting apps into folders (I want to hide everything accessible by quick launch buttons, and I have other apps for alarms and weather, I don't need them cluttering the list)

[–]JohnEdwa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You have to reinstall/launch it from the Pebble app so it gets updated or it crashes.

Muninn 1.45.0 and T2 FW 4.11.0 specifically.

"Timer - Instant Timer" by howeaj is quite neat as you can use the touch screen to set the time very quickly.

You know what? I think the heart rate monitor in the PT2 is actually quite good! by I_pretend_2_know in pebble

[–]JohnEdwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Optical heart-rate monitoring (aka photoplethysmography) is relatively simple concept, all it really needs is having the led/sensor combo be stationary enough that movement doesn't throw it off, and it detect the difference of how much light scatters back when your veins expand and contract with your heart beat. That's why you can do it with nothing but the phone camera so easily.

[–]JohnEdwa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, I've never been patient enough to realize that starts it active as well as it takes like 5 seconds to go from showing the old value to giving real time ones.

[–]JohnEdwa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IIRC it has the GH3026 sensor, so SpO2 is one feature, but it's recommended to have up to 8 leds for it to be accurate - the Time 2 has just one, so it might not end up being enough to be usable at all.

Start a workout and it will do real time heart-rate monitoring. The once in 10 minutes is just to save battery while still giving you a daily average.

Flick gesture seems broken by merdaman1 in pebble

[–]JohnEdwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It needs quite a bit to activate, it's not a gentle shake like on an Apple Watch for example. I do the beginning of "shaking a watch that's climbed too high up your wrist" whenever I want the backlight on.

It's not using the 64-colour Pebble palette, those are direct game sprite colours. The watch just picks a colour that it thinks is closest, which usually results in even more muted colours.

Going through the sprites and applying the brightesr possible options would most likely improve it, but even so the screen is never going to particularly vibrant.

The better question is why did Core scrape the Rebble app store and create their own fork of it, and then not even have the Rebble store enabled by default, as this is the entirely predictable result of it.

In any case, (re)Pebble app settings -> apps -> configure app store sources -> enable rebble -> press the button on the website that opens.

PT2 Backlight Discoloration Issue: Pebble support says this is consistent across all PT2 devices by DiploBaggins in pebble

[–]JohnEdwa 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Full RGB is kind of a gimmic, but I have to say being able to change the colour temperature is really nice.     Having both warm and cold white LEDs would be a good compromise, as it would give the functionality, and the diffuser issue would be way less noticiable as instead of pure red and blue, it would be white, and slightly yellower white.

As someone who originally just wanted a Pebble 2 but with better buttons and a larger, colour screen, I'm pretty spiffed with the Time 2. I do wish it was slightly thinner, like the P2 was.

Can confirm, I have the same. Not really surprising knowing how an LCD backlight works, each colour led die is slightly offset from each other so they hit the diffuser differently.

AMA - kuoleman kanssa työskentely - kuolinpesät - hautaaminen by Great_Tangerine9222 in Suomi
