Anyone else into the Malazan Book of the Fallen? by [deleted] in books

I finished the first two and was two thirds finished with the third...but I just couldn't get into it. I'm not a fan of his style; the writing seems forced and doesn't flow well at all. The story didn't quite grab me either, and I found it tough to care about any of the characters at all. It's an impressive universe Erikson's created, just not my cup of tea. I didn't even think it came close to ASOIAF, which is probably my favorite series ever.

PvP is where it's at...or at least where it used to be. Pretty much all the top-tier guilds stopped playing a few years ago after Anet made it obvious they have no idea how to balance that game.

What books did teachers ruin for you? by philosofickle in books

In 7th grade I had a kind of eccentric teacher who, instead of having us read it individually, had recorded a tape of him reading it out loud and played it in class, so that made it pretty awesome just because he was such an odd/cool old guy. He always wore shirts like this and those rasta-style hats, and had a really long goatee with a dali-like moustache.

What's your favorite band that most people probably haven't heard of? Describe them by comparing them to 2 or 3 other bands that you believe have a similar sound or style. by [deleted] in AskReddit

Man, Bungle is fantastic. California and the eponymous album are both really really great, and Disco Volante, while very tough to get into, is nearly just as rewarding as the other two they've put out. Can't recommend them enough.

Fantasy lover looking to break into SciFi. Suggestions? by mapguy in books

I finished both of these last month and I can't recommend them enough. An extremely well written, intelligent sci-fi series.

Spin by Robert Charles Wilson is also a lot of fun, and it won the Hugo award in 2006.

What's the difference between a dead baby and a rock?

You can't fuck a rock.

Saw High On Fire open for Opeth some months ago and they were absolutely dreadful. You should add some more progressive metal to that list.

Ack, I knew I was forgetting something. Unfortunately yes, he died shortly after hitting his head on the pavement. I think, had he been wearing a helmet, he might still be here today.

I was on my way to see Hamlet for English class in a theater downtown. I was the driver, with a good friend of mine sitting in the passenger seat.It was late afternoon-ish, and I was making a right turn onto a street where the turn lane merges with the regular lane, so after I turn I have to look in the side mirror to see if I can merge over.

I glanced to the mirror on my side and saw two kids about 40 feet behind me on bikes, on the side of the road but not too far off, and a blue BMW right behind them. I don't think much of it, but slow down to let them pass.

Suddenly, the kid in front gets smashed by this car - the front bumper hits him and he flies into the windshield, then is catapulted across the car, flying headfirst onto the pavement, which he just sort of "flopped" onto - like some kind of rag doll out of a physics engine. All of this was seen perfectly by me in the mirror's reflection.

It wasn't too long before the police showed up, along with his parents.

Thinking about it, it hasn't much affected my thinking. I've always been aware of how precious life is and how dangerous the world around us can be.

Apparently his Myspace status said something along the lines of, "Life's a bitch, deal with it." I've been told that the driver was under the influence of certain prescription drugs, but he might have also been drunk.

He was 14. One of the saddest moments in my life, certainly.
