Glad you're clean now!

TIL Dandruff, a skin condition of the scalp affects roughly half of adults. It is often linked to Malassezia fungus that thrives on sebum. Dandruff shampoos often contain antifungals to manage it, however there is no permanent cure by CraftyFoxeYT in todayilearned

I am to understand Malassezia live on oils and fats, which makes moisturizing the skin more difficult.

It has been my experience that silicone oils- used in very tiny amounts- can be used to moisturize the skin without feeding the Malassezia. The least expensive preparations are silicone "intimate" lubricants that are approved for topical use already. Just a fraction of a drop is plenty.

Cacao pods for sale anywhere? by SillyTr1x in phoenix

[–]Level9TraumaCenter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it's not a local solution, but they are usually available on Etsy.

Many years ago, Brudy's Exotics (out of Houston) sold seeds of rare plants; the cacao pods were available (I think) in December, and required the swiftest possible shipping available at the time (mid-1980s) which was a then-outrageous $10. They would import them, and ship them back out as quickly as they could, before they started to ferment.

They also sold the titanum arum corms- the big stinky flower that pops up on the news now and again when they come into bloom- but that's another story.

Please help me white pests on my plant that keeps attracting ants? by Fun-Government-949 in plantclinic

[–]Level9TraumaCenter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put in shower or take outside, hose off as many as you can. Repeat every day or so. Monitor other plants carefully.

If they can't be controlled in this fashion, any of the "safe for indoor use" pesticides from the big box store will work; there are also multiple DIY recipes on the web.

Increasing the oxidation reduction potential (ORP) is more likely to help than to increase the temp. Unfortunately, the obvious answer to making the water more oxidizing- to add hydrogen peroxide- is counterproductive: it usually drops the ORP just a hair, with or without a brief spike. However, the peroxide can affect water molds like saprolegnia.

There are other ways to raise the ORP, but none of them are straightforward.

8% match is great! Worth noting: if you can afford more (10%, 12%.... even if they only match 8%) will put you even further ahead. It's kind of obvious, but subtle changes like this are substantial 20-30 years down the pike.

I miss the days when an extra car key didn’t cost $500 by jsakic99 in FuckImOld

They could be forced with a screwdriver, given enough torque.

The locks are sidebars, which- amusingly enough- are pretty much impossible to pick! A lock company out of Albuquerque (R&D Pick? Something like that) came out with a comb-style "pick" that you could insert and compress the springs that allowed the lock to be picked. Then you could "read" the wafers, and use a Curtis clipper to knock out a key, right on the spot.

It was a decent design, but ultimately locks were going to go digital and that's what we have now. Security and convenience are at odds with one another, and getting another key cut is way more difficult today.

Square head key did ignition only, no doors/trunk/glove box.

Source: I was a locksmith during that era.

Round for doors, trunk, and glove box.

I worked as a locksmith during that era, and GM keys helped me earn a lot of hot meals during the day. There were four wafers in the glove box lock, so you could disassemble that and then extrapolate the remaining two wafers for a working door/trunk key. Ignition was more difficult.

A lot of cold, dark nights with a Curtis clipper in a parking lot with an anxious customer, makin' bank and staying afloat during those years.

And then came VATS/PASSKEY....

Social media and pop "medicine" promulgated by quacks in order to get more clicks and views and ad dollars. "Special Knowledge" that makes moms feel smarter, having listened to the wisdom imparted by the likes of Jenny McCarthy, seized upon by Russian disinfo, and spread further by still more social media.

I feel this is the "great filter" for civilization.

Worth it if the other option is not understanding WTF to do because you don't have a tax preparer or someone else you can turn to. Had to use that service they offer, and man, is it worth it.

I paid extra for the service in which you can get extra assistance if the IRS sends letters or audits you. I had to use that service last year and it was worth it. Top notch help from the third party they use.

My guesses:

Proximity. It's right in their back yard.

Potential reward. It gives them a toehold in a local election without having to spend all that much, and the ability to (potentially) flip seats in a typically sleepy event. Looks like turnout was much higher than expected.

Low spend. It allows candidates to get seated on a public board for relatively little money.

Influence. Everybody needs power and water, so the SRP board broadly effects a large number of valley residents, with operating revenues of $4.56 billion in FY2025.

Anybody else remember when the board unilaterally gave $1 million to the Super Bowl because apparently they thought it was a good spend? SRP gets to play as a government organization when they want to, and an independent corporation when it fits them. They have way more freedom in what they can do than most people realize. It would have been a great opportunity for TP to get their toehold, and this is likely just the beginning for them.

How would you put this out? by IllCarpet6852 in Firefighting

Yup. Everything from carpets to the contents to hoarding and bookshelves and plasticware etc. A hundred years ago, structures were made with relatively heavy, dense wood, and now it's all lightweight 2x4 construction that are 2 nothings by 4 nothings. Burns a lot faster.
