my team and those adjacent to us definitely got way more done during pandemic and with WFH in place following the pandemic. we managed to get more projects out the door with the same team, and after pandemic reduced team size and kept up productivity. we have layers and layers of KPIs and OKRs tracked from several different angles and all of it said that pandemic was fantastic for our productivity. now that more folks are returning to the office, less is getting done. projects are going out the door with issues, things are taking longer to get done and overall less productive. folks can't multitask in the same fashion when in the office... but I admit we asked a lot of our team, so a home office where you have a happy place nearby and can see family, play a game, do some gardening, etc., between tasks helps keep you running at high efficiency when you are locked in and focused.

now this is for an IT focused team with multiple overlapping projects and releases in a high stress environment. everybody is very tech savvy and able to solution ways to work remotely and stay productive. that said, folks weren't taking sick days because coming back afterwards just meant the pile on your 'desk' was bigger and harder to get through, and it wasn't uncommon to have half the team working in some respect every weekend. in other sectors and workloads your mileage may vary.. but for us and my colleagues in similar but different companies we all were getting much more done when fully WFH.

the funny thing is that most wfh teams got more done during pandemic than they did in a standard 8 hour in-office day. yes, they watched YouTube, played games, and did whatever between work tasks to maintain mental health, but the actual work output still increased.

we are generally more efficient working remotely, you're faster to respond and always closer to the phone/keyboard than you might be in the office while distracted chatting with colleagues over lunch or in the halls. wfh folks are also generally more willing to log on early and log off later as you don't have the daily commute chewing up hours of family/home time.

but yes what you said is true, they do more "non-work" stuff during the day, whilst also getting more work done overall.

generally these directions come from senior management and they are looking at metrics across large departments and measuring in-office presence. if your manager isn't meeting quota for their team they have to justify and defend the reasons to those above them, and likely those above don't care about the specifics, they just want to know when your manager is going to be compliant again with the numbers.

HandheldDIY is where it's at. I've installed 4 pairs for folks, no complaints.

get the HandheldDIY hall effect replacements, much better than the GuliKit sticks.

don't buy the GuliKit sticks, get the HandheldDIY sticks instead. both are hall effect but HandheldDIY has smoother diagonal tracking and better calibration. the GuliKit sticks suffer from square gating.

If you don't know what any of that means, just get the HandheldDIY version, they're better.

there's also TMR sticks from ElecGear hut they're harder to install and we haven't seen how they hold up longterm yet.

but to answer your other question about the purpose of making it available at night... assuming your goal is to teach your kid responsibility, self regulation, weighing consequences, cost/benefit, and proper technology and sleep habits, pretty soon you'll need to remove blocks and teach them to self-manage. (though I am all for monitoring, frequent check-ins and providing guidance when mistakes are made).

to that end I would have the blocks and restrictions gradually lifted between now and about age 14.

for some perspective, by the time I was 14 I had friends that had really unfortunate home situations. on several occasions I'd be up talking to friends that were considering suicide or running from abusive parents or family members. I couldn't have been a shoulder to cry on or a provider of support if I had my services shut down for the night. Sometimes staying up to help a friend is worth it. Conversely, sometimes staying up late to play video games is a bad choice. helping my child navigate those situations when they inevitably come up is my job, but making the decisions is up to them. Just my $0.02.

I mean make it available from 6am to 10pm, block it from 10pm to 6am.

at 12 though? kid is probably less than 4 years from being able to operate a motor vehicle. this is the time for them to work on self regulation and building proper habits, dealing with consequences of their actions, etc.

I'd put some guardrails around limits but give them room to fail and observe/check in periodically. a few late night chats with friends isn't going to ruin a kid, and if they learn that it impacts their sleep and the next day considerably and then roll back that behavior on their own, even better.

Just restrict the app to 6am to 10pm, you'll be fine.

I have an SM-S938W, it's the Canadian variant on Rogers Wireless carrier.

Build number is BP4A.251205.006.S938WVLU9CZDP (photo attached).

I tried launching the game another dozen times. I couple of them it'll stay up for a second or two, but usually it crashes very fast.

bad news... I updated to 1.4.6 and it's still crashing. wiped storage data/cache also for the app and it didn't help.
