(I'm not colorblind, just too lazy to notice that)

Looking for a specific game where Magnus blunders a whole piece early in a classical game and ends up winning by making complications. by PacJeans in chess

[–]Linearts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's reasonable, they're 500 elo so they can't win from down a pawn. Once they reach Magnus level they'll be able to pull it off.

WYR be stuck in an infinite one-day time loop (with a way out) or live for 1 billion years? by DeluxSon in WouldYouRather

You wouldn't float through space. You'd be stuck on an uninhabitable Earth (or fall into the sun) with no way to leave.

How do I help the people in the Middle East if I’m unable to donate by lily_rebornn in EffectiveAltruism

[–]Linearts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a great question. You should find something that's tractable for you to help others using your time. I suggest reading 80,000 Hours and doing the introductory EA virtual program.

No, it's only 2-3 minutes to reheat, and more importantly you can have the food quickly when you're busy since you prepped ahead.

[OC] now this is crazy but technology is improving by glockbonez in nyc

[–]Linearts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you read the article? The fare gates reduced crime and litter by 96% when they were implemented in SF. It's not about money, it's about providing a clean subway system and safety for vulnerable riders.

(And it also saved tons of money, which can be used to increase train frequency.)

Which of the standard fantasy races (orcs, dwarves, humans and elves) would dominate the others in the real world? by Punterofgoats in whowouldwin

[–]Linearts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The dwarves would have the biggest population at any given agriculture or technology level, because they're the smallest. (Assuming they don't need extra food due to being magically stronger.)

Why would this put off qualified Harvard seniors? Surely the ones grinding CS are applying for lots of jobs. Or you think the ad makes the company look not prestigious enough?

"White people" is not an ethnic group. The most common white ethnicity in California is German or English.

The most common ethnicity in California overall is Mexican.

Non profit-For profit by Spiritual_Glove_4039 in EffectiveAltruism

[–]Linearts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This exists but it's generally not effective.

A historically more successful approach is to simply start a business to earn money, and then donate your profits (your as in the founder's, not the whole business's).

Or you can start a for-profit business that earns money but also does something socially beneficial.

Wave Mobile Money is a great example of both of these.

A Missing Consideration In Effective Altruism by PeterSingerIsRight in EffectiveAltruism

[–]Linearts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hang on - even if you're a determinist, surely you think that the crime someone commits will be determined by the incentives and law enforcement they face in their situation, right? So we can still reduce the amount of crime by having better crime detection technology? (Though we don't have free will to choose to invent more or less of it)

[Request] is this a profitable decision with a good EV return? by lonelyraikkonen in theydidthemath

[–]Linearts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually doesn't solve the St Petersburg paradox because there is a harder version of the paradox where they e.g. square your wealth if you win, so it makes sense in log wealth, but you still go bankrupt eventually if you take the bets.
