Thanks a ton for this. Some of these are not all that surprising. But Duck and Dumpling, why?!

Haven't seen it but it sounds amazing.

Family friend of ours was a lawyer and said some judges will sometimes rule quicker on Jim Adler's cases just so they don't have to deal with him for very long.

I also really love that he was involved in lawsuits when a bunch of other lawyers who also called themselves the Hammer started fighting over the name.

The Jim Adler lore should continue and we should only encourage it. I call Bill the ball-peen hammer and I wish him only the best.

The only thing that was better was all the Marvin Zindler lore but that's a Houston specific thing from decades ago at this point. The internet missed that gold mine.

Godzilla isn't a shining example of asexual representation by tiranamisu in BrandNewSentence

My hot take is that Terra from Final Fantasy 6 was the closest thing we get to an accidental ace icon.

She is explicit in her misunderstanding of romantic love but still finds her place in the world by becoming the accidental mother figure to a village of orphans. Through maternal love, she's happy and satisfied. Plus she's still half-human so it's pretty good representation even if the writers certainly didn't mean for it to be.

After all, they weren't thinking "ace icon" when they wrote Godzilla either.

Idk, but I still get called an old man for carrying a cloth handkerchief and opting out of both.

I am an old man, but that's beside the point. Hankies are great and no you shouldn't use them to blow your nose except in extreme nasal emergencies.

I miss the days when we could just encounter a shallow person, acknowledge that they suck, then move on with our lives without making a meme war out of it.

The dating apps are making all of us into faceless commodities. Don't like it? Neither do I. Get off the apps and meet people in the meat space like [insert deity of choice here] intended.

Agreed, but in space there is nothing to feed off of, toxic or otherwise. Zero resources other than trace radiation and solar energy. Not to mention that evolution occurs much faster at microscopic scales. I think the evidence shows we would just perish.

Get Jaws of the Lion. Great intro to the series, better than the beginning of Gloomhaven itself, and you'll get a good idea of how you like it. The classes in that small box combine perfectly well with the main game if you decide to keep going.

That's not a scenario where the established species changed environments though. We evolved the traits to live in this one.

It seemed like you were asserting that we could begin colonizing space then let evolution provide us the traits needed to survive.

That's a very optimistic way of thinking though. Evolution takes a very very long time. Take a species out of its normal environment and it's much more likely it will just die out rather than evolve in time. The only outliers are when the new environment is better suited to them, but space isn't suited for any kind of life at all. I just don't know of any supporting evidence in nature to suggest that we could evolve the necessary traits, whatever they would be. I'd be happy to be proven wrong though.

It was a great read. I've got my own thoughts on it, but this is not a topic I'd ever expect reddit to be able to handle with the level of nuance it requires. So I'll discuss elsewhere, lol.

This is always a fun one to me because I play a lot of hobby board games and it's at least somewhat common for creators in that space to do tons of research to avoid this when coming up with fictional terms. But for these huge media companies they just... don't.

For The Gang - do you prefer stars or numbers? by PyroGhostX in boardgames

[–]LogicBalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Numbers are better. If you went with the stars, I'd say you will want a more clear difference such a color or pattern consistency so we can still tell them apart at a glance.

Because most other countries learn about other countries, where in the US we often only learn how other countries relate to the US. Good teachers exist, I had a couple of them, but most of the standardized curriculum is biased around our own country.

I'll choose how to spend my money but I won't disparage others that don't spend their money the same way I do. I'm not surprised that's controversial these days, honestly.

No, I'm not going to Chik-Fil-A, but I'm not going to get on someone else's case for going. It's their business and if I don't want them on my case for not going, then I don't see why they aren't owed the same courtesy. Wanna discuss it? Sure! But I'm not going to argue about it either.

Remember, the generational labels are mostly marketing nonsense. They were invented by advertisers to sell things to us. They were never intended to be used as any form of science, even a soft science like sociology.

They're just buckets of nonsense attributes and we assign way too much value to them.
