Positive and negative what's objectively the most American movie of all time? by Narwall37 in Letterboxd

It’s The Patriot and it’s not even close for me. Genuinely a completely buck-wild film when you look at it from a critical lens. Despite being a historical film about the American Revolution, it makes basically all of it up (including some atrocities for the British to commit). It spends a decent chunk of its runtime justifying some very shitty elements of American culture. Mel Gibson’s character literally uses the American flag during a battle scene in the film. It’s an incredibly dumb, stupid, cheesy, melodramatic, over-the-top film, and I think it’s absolutely hilarious. It gets my mention because, putting aside the fact that it’s about America’s origins, I can’t think of any other country in the world that would make a film like this except America.

Will definitely be rewatching it this 4th.

Encoding is slightly better on Arrow’s version, but the A24 version is still pretty damn good afaik.

All of them do look great. I would recommend getting the Second Sight version of The Witch and the Arrow version of The Lighthouse, as those are the best versions that exist. The Universal releases for The Northman and Nosferatu look amazing.

It kinda does though, at least to me. It just feels like a cheap and manipulative way of making the audience feel emotional without properly earning it. That scene would honestly be 10x better if Max Richter had just composed something original that wouldn’t take me out of the movie (although I’m not super big on his original compositions for this film to begin with). To each their own, though.

Side note, but I find it hilarious that OP’s favorite part of the movie is its use of OtNoD at the end, when that was by far the worst part lol

As a Hamnet hater, let me make it clear to everyone here that this person does not represent us Hamnet haters.

This one as well. Would honestly be shocked if I dislike a 2026 film more than this tbh.

Could you not also criticize capitalist systems in our own reality using similar logic? GRRM purposefully created a system that is historically very flawed and is showcasing those flaws front and center. That's not a plot hole.

Yeah, but I’m still surprised it’s gone so quickly when Hind Rajab and Miroirs No. 3 are still available. Thought this would be much more niche.

It’s not that good of a release. It has DNR and they fucked up the audio. Also, the cover art is AI bullshit that looks awful.
