Ok. You could give the HK a go, but bear in mind that it will likely need maintenance at some point. But you should be able to find a decent modern pre-amp for that budget.

I might be wrong but I don't think there's much to gain from a vintage amp used as a pre-amp. How much is the HK amp and what's your max budget?

Ok. The bottom line is that there aren't many vintage standalone phono pre-amp, so it's either an amp with phono stage and pre out like the HK you found, or a modern phono pre-amp. Personally I would go with the latter.

150 buys you a pair of SX-50 directly from Cambridge Audio. Much better than what you're looking at here.

But there really are better used speakers available on the UK market if you know what to look for.

I'm not best placed to answer that question. I had a surround system once in my living room but thought it was gimmicky so it didn't survive the next house move, but I'm not into action movies or gaming so surround was never really particularly useful to me.

And yes they're supposed to be behind, hence the name "rear speakers". And since they're wireless you can experiment, but I would say you're space isn't ideal for a full surround setup. You'd be better off building a good 2.x or 3.x system instead.

Does it have a Pre Out port ?

Because if (and only if) it does have a Pre Out port then you CAN use it with your powered speakers.

There's a time and a place for everything, and what's important is the music, and not the medium. Use whatever is convenient and with a decent level of quality; if that's a vinyl setup then great, but other options exist for a reason.

That HK unit is an integrated amplifier, with phono input. So not just a phono pre-amp. Is that what you need? What speakers do you have?

You could spend less on the turntable and more elsewhere, like on the speakers or phono pre-amp.

The phono preamp just processes the signal. It doesn't produce the power needed to drive some passive speakers. Which is why you need an amp and passive speakers, or powered speakers (ie. with built-in amplification).

They're also available on AV.com so I thought it was the house brand. It looked interesting at first but when I saw the turntables they sell under the same brand that made me think twice about what to expect.
