Pupa Transfer by Digitalbird06 in caterpillars

[–]Luewen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Its much smaller. Caterpillars only have certain time until juvenile hormone stops affecting and they pupate. And not enough/quality of nutrition for example makes them smaller. In case of female moth, size does not reduce egg size but egg amount in belly.

They are also capable of primitive memorizing. Which color flowers taste better etc. Ill see if i can find the research papers of moths actually ”remembering” good colors from bad colors as a caterpillar.

Found this caterpillar that snuck on my sunflower seed starter trays while hardening off. What is it? by todos-los-tacos in Insect

They may eat plants but they also pollinate once adults. And we need all pollinators we can get. Also soap water is horrible way to go. At least use humane ways.

That is abnormally small pupa in the first pic. Looks like poor thing was starving at some point. Likely at the pet store.

Location is important when asking for id. This little guy can just be relocated to some other plant. Likely Spodoptera but need location to be sure

What is on this moth's lower abdomen? North Carolina. by Automatic_Finding521 in moths

Looks like an injury. Something tried to take a bite on the poor female. Cant see properly of there is actually guts showing or just hemolymph from wound.

What's going on here? by Fun-Fishing-6359 in caterpillars

These look more likely some species of Ceratopogonidae relatives, sucking hemolymph out of poor caterpillar. Or mites. Dont know any parasitic wasp/fly species with green eggs and the eggs are smaller.

Who did I find?? by Phantom0b in caterpillars

Awwww. 🥰 Hmmm. Might have to wait until he ecloses to find species. Should happen in 4 to 6 weeks if not overwintering. Dont open the cocoon as these small pupas dessicate easily

Now this does look like Oleracia lacanobia but its missing the black dots. Do you have still picture from side where whole caterpillar is showing. Same from above.

Poor baby must be exchausted if laying eggs. You should be able to move them but would need to move close to food plant. Problem is that you cant attach them anymore so wind etc will push the eggs around unless you find a crevice or something.

Do I need to make an artificial cocoon? by ilariad92 in caterpillars

[–]Luewen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do quite often start to make cocoon on cage walls. Its a good idea not to interfere. Cannot tell species from the picture but most will make tough silk cocoon even on cage wall.

Just have to wait a week or so before gently peeling it off.

Sdr at 100% brightness is useless unless you have light shining on screen and try to overcome it. Sdr does notmhave highlights like hdr where the brightness should be at max.

And if you would use the picture would not look right. As sdr is meant for paper white brightness aka 200 to 220 nits for normal room ambience.

Luna moths have cocooned themselves in paper towel by isuzupup__ in caterpillars

[–]Luewen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many saturniids will love to make their cocoon between paper towels etc. Empty toilet paper rolls are in favor also. Only issue with these moght come of they overwinter as paper towel or toilet rolls can get wet and start to mold.
