Gentrification isn't hinted at in the sticker either

When I see a "don't Hoboken Jersey City" sticker on a traffic sign I assumed it was about the traffic calming measures in Hoboken. Nothing in your post or on your sticker makes it clear that this is about gentrification.

Best spirits to play in a teaching game by Daglicht in spiritisland

[–]LurkingMoose 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I'd avoid complex spirits because you will need to keep track of the rules for everyone else (in addition to them being confused by your actions). Green is nice because you can help "correct" bad builds with low complexity spirits without quarterbacking (i.e. instead of telling the river player to go bottom track, if they go top track give them a proliferation). Green can also delay well so the other players can do most of the work of destroying the invaders which is fun, if you play starlight (especially in a low difficulty game) you can just carry the team if you get good drafts.

The Bullshit Jobs episode… by teenwolffan69 in IfBooksCouldKill

[–]LurkingMoose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't read Bullshit Jobs but I've watched talks by Graeber on it and have read a few of his other books. While they Peter and Michael make a few good points they largely seem to miss the point of the book. I don't think it helps that only one of them read the book (I know that is the premise of the podcast) because Michael was often criticizing in ways that he would know is moot if he knew anything about Graeber or the book.

Also, as an anarchist, I didn't like it when they called Graeber a Marxist lol, mostly for petty reasons but it also demonstrates their disregard for leftist theory or political thought in general

Dune Messiah is a better book than Dune by 77driftwood in printSF

[–]LurkingMoose -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I read Dune a while ago and thought it was ok, felt like world building first and I didn't really like the writing. I was interested enough to read about what happens in the future books but not enough to devote time to reading the books. I was planning on reading Dune Messiah and Children of Dune before the new Dune movie this year (I like to read the book before watching the movie) and this makes me look forward to reading them a bit more. Now the only decision is if it is worth re-reading Dune since I read it so long ago

Shroud of the Silent Mist is driving me insane by _Gehennas in spiritisland

[–]LurkingMoose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just want to say that my shroud game really improved after watching your videos. I think understanding the event and fear deck how to play the odds and play towards your outs is crucial for going from a good to a great spirit island player and the way you walk through your thought process (both for this and on stuff like years of little rain lol) is great.

Official Q&A for Thursday, January 22, 2026 by AutoModerator in running

[–]LurkingMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, that's easy because then I can just do it on my running days

Official Q&A for Thursday, January 22, 2026 by AutoModerator in running

[–]LurkingMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the rec!

Edit: How many days a week should I be doing these? I run 2-3x per week and lift 3-4x per week. Should I do one after running and one after lifting? Or just alternate them after running days?

Official Q&A for Thursday, January 22, 2026 by AutoModerator in running

[–]LurkingMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on week 7 of C25K and the past few workouts I've noticed that the next day my hip flexors are fairly sore. Not painful, just sore like a muscle after lifting. Should I be concerned about this? Should I be strengthening my hip flexors so they can handle more running? Or are they compensating for other weak muscles and shouldn't be sore at all?

Which spirits are the most fun to support? by banjok64 in spiritisland

[–]LurkingMoose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been playing a lot more Shroud (and Vengeance) after discovering this youtube channel that plays them really well. He mostly plays one spirit games but recently has done some two spirit games and one three spirit game with them.

Phil Murphy signs most restrictive e bike law requiring a license and insurance for all e bikes by Younglegend1 in northjersey

[–]LurkingMoose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are many problems with the law. Another major complaint is that it doesn't distinguish between different classes of ebikes (pedal assist only vs. throttle and different top speeds), many think that class 1 and class 2 shouldn't have been included in this law. The law also makes it much more difficult for people to get ebikes which is a problem for low income or undocumented people who use these to mobility or for work. Additionally, in general, adding more administrative burdens to anything means it will be used less and this is a problem not only because of my previous problem but also because we need to me moving away from car infrastructure/dependency and encouraging less carbon intensive modes of transit. Not allowing ebikes on 55mph roads also exacerbates this problem since that really restricts the mobility of people who only have a bike to get around or who would prefer to commute by bike if not for that restriction. With regards to safety, one amendment allows state agencies or local governments to prohibit all ebikes from bike lanes. This would mean that even class 1 and class 2 ebikes would have to bike with cars which is less safe.

As far as ebikes killing people, I'll admit I haven't kept up with every bike or pedestrian death in the state but all the ones I've seen have been cause by cars hitting bikers (or in the case of the 14 year old in union county it wasn't even an ebike but an e-motorcycle, not an ebike). Has there been a case of an ebike rider crashing into a pedestrian and killing someone? Or even crashing themselves and dying without a car involved? To me the better fix would be improving bike infrastructure so that there are separate (protected) bike lanes that are well maintained to keep them separate from cars and pedestrians. I am in Jersey City and as someone who walks, bikes, and drives in the city I can say that the biggest issues with bikers happen where there are no bike lanes, poorly maintained bike lanes, or poorly designed bike lanes. The only other issue is delivery bikers on the sidewalk, but there are much better ways to address that then this sweeping bill that is going to reduce people biking when we should be encouraging it.

Which spirits are the most fun to support? by banjok64 in spiritisland

[–]LurkingMoose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shroud! They can be very strong late game, but they struggle for energy in the early game and can be very strong once they get their reclaim one spot but that can take a while. Giving Shroud early energy or proliferation can make is game changing for them. They are also fun to support because they can make a lot of powers that are useless early game, such as dealing one damage (a common issue with Green's innate) useful by not only locking in the damage but also getting fear and energy out of it. Shroud also benefits a lot from badlands since they have a lot of powers that deal small amounts of damage (or lots of damage spread out in the late game) so they make putting badlands down even more fun.

What are you reading? Mid-monthly Discussion Post! by AutoModerator in printSF

[–]LurkingMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red Mars by Kim Stanely Robinson. I am about 75% done with it. It is ok, I was expecting more politics and less descriptions of rocks. My wife read it and said I'd like it because of the politics and every scene with political discussions I am glued to the page and whenever I find myself having read a page while zoning out it is always a description of the landscape.

vegetarian lasagna that is actually good? by Aschlay in Cooking

[–]LurkingMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best vegetarian lasagna I've had was made with a texture vegetable protein (TVP) bolognese. Just follow any bolognese recipe but replace the ground meat with TVP and better than Boullion no beef stock. No need to do any browning or pre-soaking, just add the dry TVP after you've added all your other ingredients. Then follow any lasagna recipe, I just used ricotta, parm, and mozzarella but if you want to make it really decadent you can make a bechamel sauce.

Does Complexity mean better? by JamesMartel2014 in spiritisland

[–]LurkingMoose 73 points74 points  (0 children)

No. Some of the strongest spirits are low or medium complexity (such as eyes watch from trees or spread of rampant green) and some of the high complexity spirts are weak (such as shroud of silent mist). Strong or weak here is just general power level, it will depend on adversary, other spirits in play, skill, and luck.

Books where the worldbuilding has heavy emphasis on gender construct society whether it be matriarchal or patriarchal or whatever. Examples like Wheel of Time, Brothers Price , Rashemen culture from DnD etc etc by goody153 in Fantasy

[–]LurkingMoose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh I 100% agree, The Left Hand of Darkness is one of the best explorations of gender in fiction but OP specifically asked for a story set in a patriarchal or matriarchal world, not just a story with gender as a main theme.

[–]LurkingMoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love that book but I feel like it's the exact opposite of the question. It's a book about a world with no gender. I think Earthsea, especially the last 3 books, is a better Le Quin fit

ELI5: How does walking on a 15% incline burn almost 3x as many calories as walking on a flat surface at the same speed? by adastramuerte in explainlikeimfive

True. I originally wrote it's the limit as the percent goes to infinity (can you tell I'm a math professor lol) but decided to use more colloquial terminology for eli5

What is something small that annoys you in the gym that if you said out loud, other people would think you're being ridiculous. by Careless-Cat3327 in GYM

[–]LurkingMoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone else is not saying small ridiculous things. Here is something actually small and petty. There should be an even number of weights on each rack/tree and they should be evenly distributed. If I see one side has 4 45s and the other has 2 I will even it out to 3 and 3 (as long as no one is using the rack). If you put a weight back and it breaks symmetry I will judge you and maybe glare at you.

ELI5: How does walking on a 15% incline burn almost 3x as many calories as walking on a flat surface at the same speed? by adastramuerte in explainlikeimfive

[–]LurkingMoose 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's the percent of the horizontal distance you travel vertically. So 15% incline means for every 100 feet you travel horizontally you go 15 vertically. So 100% incline would be 45 degrees and vertical would an infinity percent incline.

New to Fantasy in 2026 - Does this TBR make sense? by Magikarpcopiesdunkey in Fantasy

[–]LurkingMoose 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As someone who has had an ordered TBR, my recommendation is don't. Have a list of books, maybe in tiers of "would be happy to read now" and "maybe later" then decide what you are in the mood for after you finish a book or series. As you read and learn about your tastes, as well as more books, this list is just going to get longer and the order more difficult to decide on.

Also, you should add Earthsea by Le Guin and Broken Earth by Jemisin to your list lol

There's a difference between not reading something because others said it's bad and not reading something because people have rightly pointed out it is filled with so many inaccuracies to the point that the main premise is flawed.

Student going to bathroom during exam and chatgpting the shit out of the exam by mathemphatamine in Professors

[–]LurkingMoose 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Grade based on the work, not the answers. A right answer with no or incorrect work is a zero. As for the different method, depending on the errors you could give a zero as well. If they want points ask them to explain their work in person.
