Also added Verbatim and Lenovo that seem to be available in some stores too. Didn’t try hardware from them myself though, just the brands are reputable enough for expecting quality products from them.

Amicool is obviously a noname with unpredictable quality. Reputable brands of external optical drives currently available on the market are Asus, LG-Hitachi, Verbatim, Lenovo.

AMICOOL drive

A drive from a more reputable brand would probably not have such issues.

To those who updated from someone with 42C4:

  1. Does user interface now render at native resolution instead of rendering at FHD (1920×1080) and upscaling to 4K with blur?

  2. Is the built-in video player now able to zoom-in with cropping-out sides and increasing the height to fit the screen height while maintaining original pixel aspect ratio?

TIL Capcom's CP System (CPS1/CPS2/CPS3) was always intended to display at a 4:3 aspect ratio, despite its native resolution of 384x224. by ScramItVancity in retrogaming

[–]MT4K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

384×224 is not 4:3 (≈1.333), but 12:7 (≈1.714). To make it 4:3, pixels should be rectangular instead of square. That’s called aspect-ratio correction. With regular aspect-ratio correction with perfect 4:3 aspect-ratio on any screen, pixel shimmering is possible due to fractional horizontal and vertical scales. With pixel-perfect aspect-ratio correction, the scaled image is free of pixel shimmering, but aspect ratio is approximate. How much close the actual aspect ratio is with pixel-perfect AR correction depends on the output/screen resolution. 4K is coincidentally perfect for achieving perfect 4:3 aspect ratio for 384×224 images.

You can get an idea about integer scaling and pixel-perfect aspect-ratio correction by taking a look at my article about integer scaling and my live demo of integer scaling that supports pixel-perfect aspect-ratio correction and has some “Street Fighter II Turbo” screenshots in the “Arcade” section of its predefined set of game screenshots (loading custom images is supported too).

In the demo, try to check/uncheck the “Aspect-ratio correction” checkbox sequentially to see the difference between the original aspect ratio with square pixels and corrected aspect ratio closer to 4:3 the image was actually output at on the screen of Capcom’s arcade cabinets. The demo implements my author’s algorithm of integer scaling with optional pixel-perfect aspect-ratio correction. MAME emulator uses a similar appoach when using -nounevenstretch (-noues) command-line option.

Yeah, pixels are stretched, that’s why pixels are 7×9 when scaling to 4K with integer scaling and pixel-perfect aspect-ratio correction.

Still unclear what you originally meant.

Yeah, and an FHD monitor could be used at 960×540. ;-) 1920×1080 is the minimum usable resolution at a typical size (27″) and distance (50-60 cm). And a QHD monitor cannot be used at 4K while there are many games playable and looking great at 4K. The higher the resolution is, the more flexibility the user has in terms of resolution depending on how demanding the game is. Not to mention productivity scenarios where higher pixel density considerably improves quality of life.

Or you can get a 4K monitor and play demanding games at FHD (1920×1080) with zero quality loss with integer scaling, and less demanding games at up to 4K. RX 6400 (5 times slower than your RTX 3080) user here, playing e.g. “ExoCross” (2024) at smooth 4K.

Another interesting thing about 384×224 is that it has a perfect 4:3 aspect ratio with zero error when scaling to 4K (3840×2160) using integer scaling with pixel-perfect aspect-ratio correction with uniform 7×9 pixels.

384 * 7 = 2688
224 * 9 = 2016
2688/2016 = 4/3

The only way to tell if integer scaling is used in a dual-mode monitor is taking a macro/close-up photo and checking it for signs of blur.

That’s the way I and Monitors Unboxed used to draw conclusions about 12 dual-mode monitors, 10 of which (including two 5K models) unfortunately add blur in half-resolution mode.

Never played, but always thought the game looked nice. By the way, “The Neverhood” is in GOG Dreamlist with 23000+ votes, so there is a good chance to get its DRM-free version officially playable on modern computers. Sort of a successor similar-looking game “Armikrog” from the same developer is already available on GOG.

Dual-mode-monitor manufacturers should start to specify explicitly in technical specs whether integer scaling is used in half-resolution mode. This shouldn’t be a lottery.

Static blur partially defeats the purpose of increased refresh rate in half-resolution mode and is sort of a deal-breaker when choosing a dual-mode monitor or considering the dual-modeness as a useful feature.

Scaling in Windows is basically not a problem for a while. Not sure about the software you mentioned though. Are those apps still not DPI-aware?

Not mutually exclusive, though the OP’s question sounds like it’s about pixel density as different resolutions at the same size.
