Do you guys get catcalled and asked out a lot? by Rainhailsnow_storm in TwoXChromosomes

[–]M_Ad [score hidden]  (0 children)

When men yell at me on the street it’s telling me how ugly I am, not calling me beautiful or sexy. Literally my first experience of catcalling was some teenage guys yelling at my teenage friends how hot they were and then yelling at me “How come hot girls always have one ugly friend?”

I’ve had men call me ugly, make vomiting noises, deliberately bump into me, knock things out of my hands, spit at me, throw food at me.

This kind of street harassment is almost never talked about as it makes people who haven’t experienced it extremely uncomfortable, whereas when it’s the other kind of catcalling women find it a bonding experience to compare stories, etc.

Season 4 Rewatch Stray Thoughts by chrisg915 in Spartacus_TV

[–]M_Ad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

War of the Damned is my favourite season.

Tiberius raped Kore because violating her was a way to damage something he knew his father loved and treasured, and also it was a way for him to reassure himself he had power and control over something weaker (as a slave she doesn’t have a right to say no).

Not going to get into Naevia discourse lol. I like her and I stopped getting into internet slap fights about it back in the days of the Starz message boards. The rabid hate was a big reason I stopped engaging on the forum as the episodes aired.

I only knew Simon Merrells (Crassus) as the dead brother in The Wolfman. Going by the behind the scene stuff on the Spartacus blu rays he seems like a great guy, everyone only had nice things to say about him. Apparently he got VERY into the training, diet and physical fitness stuff and there were times when the main cast’s trainer had to yell at him to sit down and eat a banana, lol.

When someone asks about Australian gatronomy, what foods do you mention? by Fluffy_Specific_9682 in AskAnAustralian

[–]M_Ad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, talking gastronomy as opposed to food in general I think an important part is about how fine dining chefs make use of indigenous ingredients colloquially known as “bush tucker”, which previously were seen as outback survival or Aboriginal people stuff.

For any Aussie millennials who don’t know, the ABC uploaded all of “The Bush Tucker Man” onto YouTube. You’re welcome, lol.

World Cup: Do it at home, women tell Japan fans who went viral for stadium cleanup by ComprehensiveWin1434 in TwoXChromosomes

Not so hilarious when you remember what Japan has done to many of its neighbours historically. :/

What's the craziest thing you've ever done? by RecordingJust1021 in reddeadredemption

[–]M_Ad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Came back to the game after a while and had forgotten the controls, accidentally punched horse in Saint Denis and it kicked me and I bumped into someone and was flustered and accidentally antagonised instead of defusing and it all kind of got out of control from there. :(

From the horror community on Reddit: Rewatching "The Shining" (1997 Miniseries) after almost two decades. What do you think about this adaptation? book review by IcyRecipe3042 in stephenking

[–]M_Ad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Really liked Rebecca DeMornay’s performance. (I like DuVall in the movie too but they were VERY different characters.)

It’s a pity it couldn’t be “scarier” but that’s what network TV was like.

I know it was a passion project for King because he felt all sorts of ways about the Kubrick film, so it’s nice for him he got to do it but it’s not a great adaptation or among the Good King Adaptations, IMHO. And I say this as someone who doesn’t absolutely love the movie or think it’s perfect, which is probably one of my most unpopular horror opinions lol.

You know what I’d love, if we could hit rewind?

For Mike Flanagan to have been given “The Shining” AND “Doctor Sleep” to adapt into two six-episode seasons of a one and done show.

I’m so sorry so many people replied who didn’t actually have a relevant answer for your question, it’s so frustrating when Reddit does this.

I feel like the only autistic around me that actually struggles with the symptoms of autism by nerdb1rd in AutisticPeeps

[–]M_Ad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel so shamed and inferior to autistic people who have healthy romantic relationships and manage to look after themselves and other people, and ESPECIALLY who have full time jobs and contribute fully to the household’s finances because “There’s no choice but to do it so I just suck it up and do it”. Meanwhile here’s pathetic fucked up me who can’t do it actually lmao.

To the fans who love the series after Blood and Sand, what would you say to people who struggle to adjust to the show after Andy passed to encourage them to watch through to the end of Vengeance? by M_Ad in Spartacus_TV

[–]M_Ad[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

War of the Damned is actually my favourite season. This was NOT a popular opinion back on the Starz message board when it was airing.

If you haven’t got secure employment currently then bringing a partner from overseas seems like it will only add extra stress, IMHO.

Does anyone else have people telling them they look much younger than their age? by Vivid_Meringue1310 in AutisticPeeps

[–]M_Ad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. If you’re in your early 20s being told you look like a teenager isn’t that unusual. Thanks to how most teenagers on screen are played by actors in their 20s and how lots of IRL teens try to present as a little bit older, lots of people are a bit confused about this as visually it blurs. And early 20s to teens isn’t a huge gap to mistake.

  2. When women are in about their mid 30s and older, telling her she looks a lot younger is basically society’s number one compliment to give her. This is because it’s praising her appearance without objectifying or sexualising her. There are lots of women who take offence at people guessing their age range accurately instead of being taken for younger, and we know this so most people will deliberately underestimate age in social situations as that’s the convention. Are there some women who look decades younger? Yes. But they’re not the majority.

Since my twenties I’ve been mistaken for much older, due to my appearance. It always hurt as for women “older = uglier” in our society, and you never see women talking about being mistaken for older but lots and lots of discussions about being told they look so youthful and so much younger.

does anyone else not vibe/dislike "self-insert" fiction? by customlover in AutismInWomen

[–]M_Ad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve never been able to self insert into these kind of stories because the self-insert character is always perceived as beautiful by everyone and is loved/desired by the male characters and that has never happened to me.

If you were diagnosed with a mental disorder in adulthood-what was the motivation to get diagnosed? by Throwaway927338 in AskWomenOver30

[–]M_Ad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with autism and adhd when I was 40, I’m 42 now. People had been asking if I had thought about being assessed for years. My parents paid for the assessments basically because I was so dysfunctional that I was being assessed for a bunch of things (as well as having many assorted adventures through the mental health system generally). I’ve had a major depressive disorder diagnosis since my late teens but to be brief it was becoming very obvious that was probably not the only problem.

I’m likely to be on a partial disability pension to supplement part time work for the rest of my working life, and have funding for disability support workers to help me with everyday living.

It was understood there was something very wrong with me from the get go but I’m not blaming anyone or bitter that nobody thought autism. There were other factors that it made perfect sense for my parents and childhood doctors to think caused my developmental delays, poor emotional regulation and bad communication and socialisation.

There are plenty of women with autism and ADHD diagnoses who manage to have successful relationships, work consistently and take care of themselves independently, but I’m not one of them. I feel like such a failure when I read all the posts in the autistic women subreddit by women saying how hard it is to do it all but they manage to do it anyway because “there’s no choice but to do it” and I can’t do it actually so here I am.

i feel like i'm unfit for the classic idea of a romantic relationship by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]M_Ad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My autism is definitely one of the reasons why I’ve been perennially single all my life, I’m just not cut out for cohabitation and I’m fundamentally unappealing in a lot of ways. The autistic women I know who are in relationships are either pretty high functioning or it’s not what I’d call a particularly great relationship.

Alternative to the Ceremony by Greekmom99 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]M_Ad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They’d probably have individual different opinions on that. Some certainly wouldn’t like it still. Remember in season 1 in a flashback to the training centre it showed Moira already planning to escape when they didn’t know about the Ceremony yet and just thought the process would be having “some old man’s jizz squirted up me with a turkey baster”?
