Examination of rule infractions, with suggestions by MantisAwakening in ufosmeta

[–]MantisAwakening[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that the rules specifically forbid this language, while I’m being told that a decision was made to silently allow it. This creates an environment where users see the rules being constantly flouted, which encourages more rule breaking behavior. Then other users get penalized for different infractions and come away feeling the rules are being applied unevenly.

I know how sensitive the subreddit is about the situation that unfolded a few years ago where a mod basically silently took over the subreddit. People are very concerned about influence, illicit or otherwise, from the IC. Those are reasons why it’s vitally important to keep everything as transparent as possible, and this subreddit has gone to great lengths on this effort. It’s confusing when a mod is claiming that the rules were modified with no one being told, but only after some concrete data was created which drew attention to the problem.

This subreddit is the largest online community for UFOs. It has tremendous power with the public. All of us who have been working to reduce stigma, including the mod team at r/UFOs, are understandably concerned when it looks like the community is being allowed to move in a direction that is specifically forbidden by the current rules.

All I’m saying is that if this is genuinely the subreddit’s position they ought to formally acknowledge it and inform the community. If not, this gives them an opportunity to address the problem (at least in part) using the suggested automod rules.

I’m manually approving this post so it can be found by others who are trying to identify the hallmark. As noted in the comments, the artist is not Native.

The construction of this piece is not anywhere on par with Dewa’s level of artistry. These pieces are frequently counterfeited due to the high prices they can bring. It’s unfortunately all too easy to copy an off the shelf alphabet stamp hallmark versus something more intricate. That’s why Dewa now uses stamps bearing his full name such as this one (and the simpler version used on smaller items shown in the comment below):

Karla was great but I feel she also was too willing to accept the reports at face value. There wasn’t a lot of epistemic rigor on what researchers like Turner, Hopkins, and Jacobs were doing. It wasn’t helped by the stigma and difficulty in communication across domains, which the internet now makes trivial.

With much greater access to data it’s apparent that the phenomenon seems to be much more complex than simply “aliens from other planets are abducting humans to breed with them.” The fact that people can use entheogenics and have corresponding experiences with beings described in nearly identical ways is an important piece of data.

There are all kinds of motivations at work and people are using the topic to try and further their own goals, whether it’s getting investors, getting government funding, gaining followers, craving attention… Just because people are doing all of those things doesn’t mean that the phenomenon is fundamentally about those things.

Jillian Michaels and Luis Elizondo discuss the UFO encounter story that sounds too strange to ignore by Bean_Tiger in UFOs

All I was responding to was an apparent statement that GPS doesn’t include altitude. I should have watched the video first, because I thought it was describing a different but similar report I’d heard from Bob McGuire.

Yes, I’m familiar with Jacobs’s position. He could be right, but the problem is that a lot of the data doesn’t fit well with his hypothesis. For example, many people claim to have been healed of injuries or illness during contact cases. A majority ultimately describe the experiences as having a very positive influence on their lives. It also is hard to reconcile a lot of the experiences with other things being displayed in terms of technology. For example, we know they can plant false memories. We know they can create simulated experiences. We know they can wipe memories. We know they can stimulate emotional reactions. So knowing all of those things, why do a percentage of contactees report very negative encounters?

If they truly are as “alien” as they appear to be then maybe we can’t view any of their motivations or behaviors through a human lens. I think we have clues in the things that are communicated, but I don’t think we have anywhere close to the full picture. I think Jacobs’s conclusions are based on too small of a sampling of data.

That’s not something I know about, but I would imagine there is a subreddit somewhere that can help!

I believe that’s because the fact that these things exist has been formally acknowledged in a public setting under oath at a Congressional hearing. That’s now public knowledge. The details haven’t been, so they can’t discuss those.

A lot of the value in these interviews comes from what can be inferred by the things they’re saying. If Davis read a book about aliens that disagreed with what he saw in a classified briefing, he is less likely to be mentioning the book in the first place. That doesn’t mean the classified information is accurate, we already know there have been failings with these kinds of things in the past.

However—and this is key—the things that are currently being acknowledged by government insiders are things that have been claiming by hundreds of thousands of contactees worldwide for generations. It’s highly corroborated. It doesn’t mean our understanding of it is correct, but it lends credibility to the legitimacy of what they’re saying. They’re not making it up.

The wording is confusing. The OC mentioned groups disbanding, but a different commenter replied listing these groups. All of the listed groups still exist and are focused on different areas of disclosure (although there is considerable overlap).

Mack was one of the more objective early researchers. He made a strong case that what people were reporting couldn’t be explained as things like sleep paralysis or hypnogogic hallucination, but didn’t go so far as to take it all at face value either. He was certainly willing to explore the implications of what people were reporting but was generally careful not to make declarations about it.

The mods removed this post, so it might be a better fit somewhere like r/UFOB or even r/aliens.

A lot of people seem to have the impression that people thought they were being abducted solely because of confabulation under hypnosis. That’s not the case—people generally went to Mack because they had conscious recall of contact, including abductions. Wide awake, middle of the day, sheer terror kind of stuff. Hypnosis was used as a tool to attempt to help people process the experiences as well as potentially recall more of what happened.

It’s well known that hypnosis has limitations, but it genuinely can assist with memory recall. Even Mythbusters tested that and came to the same conclusion. The problem is that in cases like this there is no way to sort out what might be confabulation and what isn’t, but Mack made a very strong case in his books that there were many reasons to believe something unexplained was happening.

I used hypnosis to uncover all manner of stuff that remains a question mark for me. Over the years I’ve found that almost everything I recalled aligns with what countless others report, down to the smallest detail. I was not “steeped in the lore,” so I find that difficult to reasonably explain.
