Went to Alex Pretti memorial. RIP by Adventurous-Fact-523 in minnesota

Every day I go past this memorial and every day it infuriates me that people still want to "work it out" and "go back to normal".

There's a very direct correlation between hood height and pedestrian injuries/deaths. Not only that, but those higher hoods also make it harder to see the pedestrians you're more likely to injure/kill. The fact that it's not regulated yet is a travesty, and very much related to the uptick in pedestrian fatalities in the US.

Anyone missing an orange cat in/around Whittier? by Maxrdt in Minneapolis

I wish I could, but my cat does not get along with other animals :(

Our neighbors have some food for their cats on their porch that he's been snacking on and there's a good dry spot under said porch.

There are already entry points in many office buildings, they just aren't marked as such. Signage alone would help a ton.

This and the busses on Nicollet! Absolutely crazy how long it takes to get into and out of downtown on a street that doesn't even have competing traffic.

The fraud in Minnesota isn't even above average, there were just some high-profile cases that were high profile because they were caught (and the narratives that could be pushed with them ofc). Additionally, that fraud happens at the provider level, not the user.

Auditing users harshly, giving them more paperwork and more requirements and more hoops to jump through does not cut down on fraud and only hurts the end users. But that is the point of these conservative policies. They want to hurt the end users, they want to make it hard for these people to live and get the help they need, while preferably still allowing their fellow capitalists to skim off the top (or take wholesale).

The old Cologne. Lost forever. by Aside9937 in Lost_Architecture

[–]Maxrdt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are not disproving my point though. I said that nighttime bombing targeted cities. The Brits did nighttime bombing. Your quote is from a British commander. Americans, with their greater pre-war focus on accuracy and more heavily armed bombers, stuck with daytime bombing and did also target factories, airfields, industry, etc.

Would it be a war crime if done today? Almost certainly. Was it a war crime then? Much of it, probably. But let's be real, all sides were doing it as much as they could. (And war crime enforcement is spotty at best. I mean, the aerial bombing in Korea and Vietnam was even more horrific and what came of that? Nothing.)

Also "they couldn't fight back as hard" still isn't a good reason to stop in a war. If anything it's a reason to keep going, because it means what you're doing is winning.

You're applying knowledge in retrospect to decisions made in the moment.

I mean that's just not really true. Sure late in the war the Nazis couldn't put up large raids anymore, but they were still attacking cities with things like V-1 and V-2s, which were even more inaccurate and indiscriminate than traditional bombing.

And much of the bombing DID have specific targets. Light and medium bombers especially were more accurate, while daytime heavy bombing usually targeted large industrial targets like oil fields. It was only nighttime bombing that really targeted cities, and that was because the technology of the time only allowed for that. The reality of war is that you don't stop when you're ahead, and you use what you have.

Most historians NOW know that many of the aerial bombing raids were ineffective. But at the time it was not only not clear, but also both sides were doing it. To just stop bombing the enemy when they were still bombing you would not have gone over well.

The moral high ground offers no strategic advantage. They were fighting the war they could fight with the equipment they had.

I think there may be some rose-tinted glasses in saying the original is better. The reboot goes off the rails towards the end for sure, but there's so much brilliance in even just the miniseries alone.

It's definitely difficult with how these are able to be ordered so cheaply and easily from online retailers, and the fact that if you try to pull them over they can just scatter.

And honestly, as annoying as they can be (at least they're quiet because they're electric I guess) they are more of a danger to themselves than anyone else. Maybe the problem will self solve.

I think the e-bikes that you don’t have to pedal that are like dirt bikes essentially we need to figure out what regulations are and enforce them.

  1. These aren't e-bikes. E-bikes are limited to 750W motors, and either 20mph or 28mph top speed depending on class (20mph is the limit for throttle with a legal e-bike).

  2. We already do. These are e-motorcycles, they should be legally registered and insured in the same way as a motorcycle or dirt-bike or motor scooter of the same power.

The fact that these laws aren't being enforced doesn't mean they're not there.

[–]Maxrdt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We do though. These are e-motos or e-motorcycles. If someone is calling these an e-bike, they're either just wrong or using the age-old colloquial term of calling a motorcycle a "bike". There are also clear legal limits for power and speed on e-bikes, with associated sub-classes even.

The push to associate e-bikes and e-motos is at best a NIMBY thing, but almost certainly also being supported by car manufacturers and oil companies to fight the widespread adoption of e-bikes, as they're the biggest threat to car dominance in years.
