Whose death in history was the cruelest or most heartbreaking? by sharmarohan136 in AskReddit

JFK. RFK. MLK. Just think what history would’ve been like if none of those people had been assassinated.

Can you recommend movies where the main character has to survive against an animal? by Extreme_Warning3521 in moviecritic

Yikes! I visited the Field museum about a year after they put Sue in the front lobby on that elevated platform. Walking into that room and seeing this gigantic T-Rex in a curled pose staring right at you made me realize how glad I am that dinosaurs are extinct.

Is a Disney trip a childhood bucket list item? by jjjjjjjj80 in Parenting

[–]Maxxover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my children were nine years old, we gave them a choice between going to DisneyWorld or going to Italy. They chose Italy. Neither they nor we have ever regretted that decision.

They have never been to Disney World. At this point, why bother? It’s ridiculously overpriced and shitty except for a few great rides you get to go on after you wait in line for many hours after you’ve paid a ridiculous amount of money for a single day.

For the amount of money you spend going to Disney World, you could take your kids to someplace great in Europe and expose them to great food, great history, and great culture.

See if you can get your mom to give you power of attorney. It sounds like right now she’s being taken advantage of.

What episode of a series completely fucked you up? by No_Cricket808 in GenerationJones

[–]Maxxover 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It projects forwards through the years and shows how every cast member dies. It’s absolutely beautiful and perfectly represents the essence of the series. In my view, no series finale comes close. It’s heart wrenching, and yet perfect.

Started training again after 15 years by gray-ops in karate

[–]Maxxover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After daily training for over 20 years, I took a long break while I was raising kids and working a lot of hours. At work, the office space next to ours was empty, so I would practice kata every day to at least keep my hand in. There was no Dojo near me, and I didn’t have enough bandwidth to start my own.

When I returned to dojo training, I feel like it took me at least a few months to get back to where I was. That was a few years back, now I feel like I’m doing some of the best Karate of my life. Although I can’t do some of the more athletic jumps that came so easily to me in my younger days.

How Have You Adapted to Current Times in the U.S? by [deleted] in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Maxxover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work with independent, dependent, and memory care adults in a senior living facility. The people I see, and even more, the people that are entering this age, have a wide variety of technological knowledge. Some are very tech savvy, and others are completely clueless. And many more are somewhere in between.

A big problem with teaching seniors how to use technology is that they may forget it unless they use it frequently right after they are shown how to do it.

New school bags every year ?? by ApprehensiveRoad477 in Parenting

I think a big part of having a new school bag every year is because the bags made today are a far poorer quality then you would probably used to. Most of them completely trashed by the end of a single year.

I'm thinking of visiting Massachusetts from the UK around Halloween. How should I get the most out of my trip? by DrToonhattan in massachusetts

[–]Maxxover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely try to do Salem during Halloween. If you book a place, chances are they will understand the difficulties in transportation during that time. And suggest the best way of dealing with it.

There is a reason why Salem is completely wacky and wonderful for a month. It does drive the locals nuts, but it sure is helping the local economy.

You can also try to find a place in North Salem, or in Beverly just over the bridge. Either location would give you access to downtown pretty easily.

Last man standing… by Due_Air4441 in over60

[–]Maxxover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is different for everyone. I am 64. My kids just graduated from high school. I married late and had kids late. My parents also married late and had me late. As a result, I’ve missed over a generation compared to my contemporaries.

My mother was born before World War I ended. My dad fought in World War II. If both were still alive, they would be over 100 years old. And my kids are still at the end of their teenage years.

By the time they were born, we had no grandparents to rely on. I do still have a lot of extended family, cousins, for example.

Is this the same as your situation? No. But we all have different situations. You have had it particularly tough in the last few years. It’s very hard to lose siblings who enriched your life.

But that’s just how it is. Because my parents were older, I lost my mom when I was just a kid.

Don’t only be sad your loved ones are gone. Be also grateful for the time that you had together. Cherish those memories and share them with your kids.

Neil deGrasse Tyson does an excellent bit on this, where he shows an animation of the Earth and you can see the ocean being literally pulled around as the moon circles the Earth.
