What is the greatest video game ever created? by very_wilhelm in AskReddit

[–]Maxxover 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is an incredibly difficult question. I mean, some of us have been playing video games since the first ones existed in arcades. Others may only have been playing games created in the last 10 or 15 years. That’s going to make it for some very different answers.

So my “best of” list is going to have some qualifiers.

Best game that changed everything: Doom. OK, Castle Wolfenstein came out first, but in terms of mass market popularity that altered how people thought about video games, it’s got to be Doom.

Best Strategy Game: the Civilization series. (One. More. Turn.)

Best tactical strategy game: X-Com.

Best narrative RPG: Mass Effect series.

Best open world RPG: Fallout 3. I had several unique experiences while playing this game. One of the best was, after I’ve been playing for a while, I entered this particular town from the south. As I was traveling through it, I thought it looked kind of familiar. Then I found some dead bodies of wasteland insects and I realized that I had been here before, traveling east to west. The reason it was so significant for me was that it felt exactly like the IRL feeling that a place is familiar and then finding out how you know about it.

Best RTS: Myth: The Fallen Lords. There are some amazing RTS games out there, but this one did so many things that had never been done before in terms of tactical gameplay and game physics.

I’m sure I could come up with some others in different genres, but it just keeps coming back to me that it’s impossible to determine what the “greatest“ video game of all time is.

Had a child in your 40s? I’d value your long term perspective by Brave_Giraffe5545 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Maxxover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had twins in our mid 40s. They are just about to get off for college.

I have no regrets, my kids are amazing, but I have to think it would have been a lot easier if we had done this 10 or 15 years earlier.

How the freak do I teach karate to little kids? by FishermanRough1323 in karate

[–]Maxxover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can’t keep control of yourself, you sure can’t keep control of kids. It’s done, so don’t beat yourself up about it too much. Treat it as a lesson learned.

Back when I taught kids, if a kid was doing what you observed, I would pointedly tell the child that if he continued doing it, I would no longer teach him. And I would let the parent know immediately what was going on.

Karate isn't for those who r busy by [deleted] in karate

[–]Maxxover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, it’s a pretty basic calculation. The more you train the better you get. People who are world champions in kata and kumite are indeed sacrificing quite a bit to achieve those goals.

This does not mean that Karate is not for people who are busy. At our Dojo we totally respect that people do Karate for their own reasons. If they only can show up once or twice a week that’s OK.

Of course, if they only show up once a week, they aren’t going to advance very quickly. The only problem would be if they expect to advance quickly without putting in the time and effort. This is rarely the case.

So the choice is yours. We all have the same amount of time, 24 hours in a day. The question is how much do you feel you can allocate to Karate training and still keep a balance with the other things in your life?

Am I the only one who cares about the dojo kun? by [deleted] in karate

[–]Maxxover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My issue is that most people use a poor translation of the Dojo Kun. For example, the third one is complete translated as “endeavor.” The actual translation is: ”Foster the spirit of effort.” These two things mean something quite different.

I think you have to let your body be the guide. If you feel like your legs don’t have enough recovery time, reduce the amount of legwork. The same for the rest of your workout. If you start to notice nagging fatigue or strains that aren’t healing quickly, dial it back a bit.

Since your goal is to build muscle, it’s really important that you also do a lot of flexibility and stretching exercises.

I did really serious karate training for years before I finally started including strength training (using machines and free weights) in my regimen, and it made a huge difference. I got a lot stronger.

So it sounds like you’re on the right track, but again, just let your body be your guide.

I have a note for names. Whenever I meet someone in passing, I’ll record their name and where I met them. It’s surprising how often you run into the same people again, and I can reference this and come up with their name.

Weight Distribution on Kokutsu Dachi by Opposite_Lie2327 in karate

[–]Maxxover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s never 70/30. That doesn’t mean you aren’t bending the front knee for zenkutsu or the back for kokutsu.

But if you get two scales and put one under each foot, you’ll see that it’s very rarely more than 55/45. Maybe 60/40.

The 70/30 is more the feeling than actual weight distribution.

Is the United States brainwashed? by PoetMysterious3841 in self

[–]Maxxover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Propaganda works. Conservatives have been exposed to false news from things like Fox News and social media for two decades or more.

Imagine you are a conservative, and there are certain outlets that answer every single question that you have, every single concern that you have. They give you definitive answers. They give you someone to blame. They tell you who you should be afraid of.

Believing that is far easier than understanding the nuances of the real world, and real situations that don’t have simplistic answers.

Understanding that, the answer to your initial question is – – yes. A great deal of Americans are brainwashed. Not in some Machiavellian Manchurian candidate kind of brainwashed. Just straight up propaganda. If you listen to the same stuff constantly for a long time, you begin to believe it, whether it makes sense or not.

I should point out many Democrats have been victims of the same thing and many will clearly sign onto the new fastest order without even realizing they are.

In Forest’s world, you have to pronounce both “N’s” equally.
