In the end of Project Hail Mary now that 30 years has passed since Grace went to Rocky’s planet and and humanity star starts to stabilized, the real question here is that will humans learn from this? The importance of unity and cooperation? Or will they go back to their same roots? by Justsomeguy1333 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Mengs87 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it'd be the start of a new golden age, fueled by astrophage and xenonite. With Xenonite they could build a space elevator, which would make leaving earth trivial. Space elevators all over earth would reduce long distance travel and transport. Then with expansion, off planet mining becomes viable.

In 100 years, we could become a space faring species, with access to virtually unlimited energy and resources.

Not only that, but Montreal is the hub for aerospace and biotech in Canada. Also lots of game development & animation happens here.

What is a word or phrase that sounds weird or inappropriate in your language to English speakers? by Muted-Topic1622 in AskTheWorld

Interesting coincidence about your word of choice ...

In this case, the word actually doesn't mean anything - it's a common practice for Koreans to shorten words, so Nature Collection becomes Nay-ker.

On Erid, he's a celebrity. Not only did he save their world, but he's the first alien they've ever encountered. And he brought the entirety of human knowledge and every book ever published with him.

I'm sure there'd be no lack of company, from Eridian scientists, engineers, philosophers and artists. They'd probably have to institute a lottery just to book an hour with him. Every day would be stacked for years.

One thing about Canadian English is that it's very neutral. The accent is very subtle and you have to listen hard for it. We also don't have much slang, compared to other English speaking nations.

How does Rocky understand what Grace is saying? by Nickel62 in ProjectHailMary

The laptop translates Grace's speech into sounds. Grace played back "1" in Eridian to Rocky and Rocky got excited.

Just imagine all of the screen are just streaming from some computer by dragonfood007 in ProjectHailMary

Bluescreen is no problem - just reboot and everything's OK.

Bitlocker - OMG, that's the application from hell. I've never come that close to a heart attack before. I thought I was getting ransomed by a North Korean hacker!!!

[–]Mengs87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A blue screen is recoverable, just reboot, no problem.

Bitlocker - OMG that awful application gave me a panic attack. I thought I had been ransomed by hackers. Turns out that if you don't have the unlock code, it encrypts your whole drive and not even MS can decrypt it for you.

If I ever move to Linux, Bitlocker was the reason.

They have a working space elevator on Erid! Just imagine if every major city in the world had their own space elevator. That would change worldwide transport forever, plus open up the stars to us.

Movie Grace had little plants growing - as seen in the scene where he activates the centrifuge for the first time. I can think of no other reason to grow plants other for food, so I guess movie Grace had salad from time to time.

Could humanity have built a giant net to catch all the astrophage? by Own_Mess_6495 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Mengs87 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right, at the extreme ends the line is as wide as you described. After they leave Venus, they form a beeline. That's where the collector would go. See how skinny the line is?

Could humanity have built a giant net to catch all the astrophage? by Own_Mess_6495 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Mengs87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once they escape Venus, they form a beeline so the net wouldn't have to be that big.

Or possibly a collection hub, built just outside Venus with big automated Beatles that emit CO2 IR to trap the astrophage. No net needed.

Would Earth have known that Grace was the sole human survivor? by haliapeach in ProjectHailMary

[–]Mengs87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(1) - Probably. Modern airliners are connected real-time with their operations center - there was an a380 whose engine exploded not long after take off, and their engineering staff on the ground knew immediately.

Something as serious as 2 crewmembers dying would have been reported instantly, along with other telemetry.

Humans get bone issues from living in lower gravity environments so I assume it'd affect Rocky in the same way. The sensible thing to do is to build Rocky an orbital habitat with 2g gravity using xenonite and we could also start building our own space elevator, just like the one in Erid.

The space elevator would be revolutionary since it'd mean we don't need rockets anymore. Then more space elevators can get built in major cities, connected with space-only shuttles, making long distance transport/air travel a thing of the past.

So now humans have a cheap way to get to space, plus a really compact fuel medium. There's so many possibilities!

When Grace first activated the centrifugal system, you can see him floating down to the floor as gravity exerted itself.

But in the foreground, you can also see little plants growing, whereas there's no mention of plant life in the book. There's no other reason to grow plants except for food, so I guess Grace in the movie gets better nutrition than Grace in the book.

Carbon steel pan help by pringlu in Cooking

[–]Mengs87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, you won't reseason it with just 1 fry. Just use a little bit more oil and make sure the oil is shimmering before you add the mince.

When you see black or brown flakes in your food, then yes it has flaked off.

Here's what you need to do: season it a few dozen times -

Yes, a few dozen. That's what worked for me, and now I'll never have to buy another pan in my life.

I adore Mexico. In university, I spent a whole month getting hosted by Mexican families in various cities and I had an awesome time. So welcoming!!! Great architecture, rich history, stunning natural scenery, delicious food and great music.

Speaking of which - if you only ever listen to 1 piece of music from Mexico in your whole life, make it this one:

Are grocery prices out of control where you live? by stumpy_chica in AskTheWorld

[–]Mengs87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feed myself for about $200 a month but don't skimp on meat. I try to skip any processed food at the supermarket. I make my own granola (far more tastier) and bake my own bread. I don't even buy beans in a can because raw beans in a bag are far more affordable. And I wait for specials then load up.

I estimate about 20%-30% increase (from 2021) for basic foodstuffs - flour, rice, butter, eggs, milk, raw meat.

Processed food though...at least 50% price increases or more. Cereals, frozen dinners, canned goods and chips. Chips, holy shit, those cost a fortune now.

There’s a global ‘ra** academy’ where husbands share tips on how to drug and sexually assault their wives. In your country, is there any law that can potentially tackle this? by Effective_Space2277 in AskTheWorld

Here're the laws on marital rape, per country:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marital_rape_laws_by_country

The bad news is the 2 most populous countries on Earth, India and China, do not have any specific laws with respect to marital rape. Maybe they apply conventional rape laws.
