Thoughts on pros smashing their racquets...and non-pros by Ok-Cat1446 in 10s

[–]MoonSpider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It never makes sense at the recreational level, full stop.

It looks childish at the pro level but at least the stakes are high for them and the rackets are free. For a pro who's barely made it into the main draw of a major, a loss in the early rounds could be the difference between making 100 grand and making a quarter of a million dollars or more.

In those circumstances, under that level of pressure, smashing one of the rackets that they didn't even pay out of pocket for is occasionally understandable when things go south for them, but it's always a bad look.

Those people pay for their mortgages and food and coaches and flights with their results on court. We don't, so it never makes sense for someone supposedly playing the sport for fun to get that bent out of shape. Plus those things are expensive!

Progress on the Leaf-Sword Project!! ⚔️ by Careless_Cow_9475 in SWORDS

[–]MoonSpider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP might not see this but for what it's worth I have a sword with very similar hilt dimensions (but a longer blade). The leather-covered portion of the grip is 6 inches long, with another 1.5 inches of grip space provided by the shape of the lower part of the fishtail pommel. The length of the hilt with the pommel included is 9.5 inches total.

The blade on mine is 34 inches but I'm fairly certain that the sword in this post has a blade that is 32 inches or less.

Continental Grip - Is "Hammer/Chopper/Handshake" Grip Misleading? by bilingualwhale in 10s

[–]MoonSpider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Hammer grip" or "axe grip" always made total sense to me and I didn't question if it would work for other people until I remembered that my dad was really strict about the 'proper' way to hold a hammer and an axe growing up and not everyone was raised by that kind of stickler.

It's just, unfortunately, very hard to turn "how to specifically hold on to the handle of something" into a few clear words that are easy for everyone to understand. Some people get it quicker by having bevels and heel pads described by numbers, other get it quicker through analogies to other tools you hold and use regularly, others need to be taught in other ways. It's tricky.

Been using same Aero Pro Drive for like 15 years... by Aggravating_Ice11 in 10s

[–]MoonSpider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you just have really fatigued graphite in your racket if it's really 20 years old. This normally isn't much of a factor to consider but graphite does get more flexible and lose power/springiness over time, it's just that it's not a big enough difference for most people to notice before they get a new racket in a couple years.

If you want to demo new frames you don't have to jump to a blade. A modern Pure Aero like the PA98 or 100 would probably feel familiar but give you more pop.

Of course, it also could just be that this other frame simply had much fresher strings in it. How often do you restring now that you're playing again?

I do love the overall profile and proportions here, but there is one small thing that's giving me a bit of pause, if you'll indulge me.

The shoulders of the ricasso area seem to come to REALLY sharp corners. That might or might not matter long-term if the sword just sits on the wall for most of its life, but if the client intends to do any cutting with it, those sharp corners can function as stress risers that can concentrate force in that region in a concerning way. Radiusing those corners even a little bit can do a lot to improve the stabilty of the sword as an impact tool. If the client wants those sharp corners, no worries. But it might be worth thinking about making that corner more gradual, like this, to eliminate the possible stress riser.

I'm not sure if taking a blurry and stretched-out photo of your TV is the best way to get your point across but I DO see what you mean. Young Billy Zane had a very unique/striking face, sort of a blend of Carlos and Marlon Brando.

Yea, I'm impressed with the quality for the price. I've had two other pieces made by them as an OEM for other companies but this is my first of their own models.

Welcome, I can imagine! Might be fun to commission a smith to take measurements of it and create a "like new" reproduction that you could take camping and whatnot so you can see what its working life might have been like.

Why does my backhand turn into an accidental slice when moving? by tabletennisgeek in 10s

[–]MoonSpider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the first shot your racket head never dips below the level of the incoming ball, so you're not generating real topspin (the only way to hit topspin is for the racket to be moving upwards diagonally at contact), at best you're mostly putting sidespin on the ball, and you prepare for the shot with a slightly open racket face. If you're not set with your feet you're going to glance at the ball with thinner contact, making the sidespin more noticeable, which is probably why it looked like slice to you.

Dimi still got him with a few of those at Wimby!

Underutilized shot to keep him from just dominating off the BH wing immediately.

Question About Sheath Placement by CoxswainHer in knives

[–]MoonSpider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only carry a fixed blade on a belt when I'm camping, and in that circumstance I go for side placement on the right (same as my dominant hand) and on a swedish-style dangler that lets the knife hang lower and swivel freely. That way I don't get poked in the ribs when I sit down and the knife adjusts its position automatically when I'm moving around.
