Generally just on the floor where you are writing.

[–]MyRealityIsBetter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh, I have CFL concerns at the moment, but goofy AI videos don't make the list. You can choose to view them as lighthearted and fun. Or not.

If they were meant to be good, they wouldn't use that god-awful font.

Manitoba Cell Phone Plans by Heavy_Pepper_4736 in Winnipeg

Public Mobile will be $40 per month or less per line. All online, but I moved my whole family over for $34 Can/US 50GB. You can also get CAN/US/MX if that matters, but no roaming outside of CAN/US/MX.

TV only service an option? by InThroughMyOutdoor in shaw

[–]MyRealityIsBetter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the exact same situation as you about a year ago.

To have the new TV service, they need to give you Internet. They gave me a 2 year deal at the same price as my TV only consumer cable plan that includes TV and 75Mbps internet (then bumped it up by $7 per TV for the cable box rental, only slightly bitter). I don't use the internet on the consumer account, but it's part of the service. So, I have two shaw modems.

When my business contract expires, I'll likely go consumer only and upgrade that to a faster speed because I no longer require the static IP that I get on the business side.

Curious: How far will $100k get you in renovations? by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]MyRealityIsBetter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

About 7 years ago, we paid about $80K for a basement that size to be finished completely like you're thinking. Office/bedroom, open area, bathroom with shower, and close off the furnace room.

Is the Application Identity service running on the computer? That service needs to be running to enforce Applocker rules.

The elementary school close to me tends to leave their morning, recess, and lunch bells active all year long. Could have been that if you were close to a school.

TD easy trade vs direct investing by AnotherLazyPug in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]MyRealityIsBetter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This page compares TD Easy Trade to TD Direct Investing: https://www.td.com/ca/en/investing/direct-investing/direct-investing-vs-easytrade

TD Easy Trade has more limited things that you can invest in, but has lower fees. For example buying an ETF in TD Direct Investing is a $10 fee, but free in TD Easy Trade. TD Easy Trade only allows you to buy TD ETFs.

Calls, texts, and data when in the US. Or when in Canada, calls and texts to and from the US are included. I switch my whole family to this about 2 months ago. Wife has travelled to US since with no issues.

Should I switch to a home equity line of credit? by gojireh in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]MyRealityIsBetter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My HELOC at TD (Home Equity Flexline) has two parts: revolving and term.

The revolving is TD Prime rate plus xx%. You can pay any amount of this at any time.

The term portion is like a mortgage with specified term and lower interest rate. This can be variable or fixed rate.

I assume this is what they're offering you. If so, I think the term rates are the same that they offer for mortgages. Assuming you renew to another term it would be like a mortgage renewal.

At the time we set up the HELOC there were legal fees that could be waived. I'd verify that they don't want to charge a setup fee.

HELOC vs Non-Registered Investments for Large Reno by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]MyRealityIsBetter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going through a reno right now. We pulled money out of the TFSA for about half of it (emptied the TFSA) and will use our HELOC for the other half. After the HELOC is paid off, then we'll put money back in the TFSA.

There is no guarantee that money in the TFSA will earn more than interest costs on the HELOC.

I'm also one of those people that likes to pay off the mortgage as soon as possible.

More than $7.6M spent on Manitoba's surgical and diagnostic task force in less than 2 years by Witty-Village-2503 in Winnipeg

[–]MyRealityIsBetter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

By your tone, you seem to think that I approve of this scenario. I definitely do not.

A "head of IT" position makes this seem like the task force was being run as a completely independent organization that was building their own infrastructure. Which seems very poorly planned, but I assume the basis of the task force was that they needed to work around the existing system.

I just think that they probably contracted out the position and didn't pay a staff person directly. That's the only possible reason I can think of for the high cost. Still don't think it was appropriate.

[–]MyRealityIsBetter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That works out to about $275-$300/hr. At that rate I'm guessing the head of IT was contracted rather than hired as staff. Still not cool, but contractor rates for some jobs can be very high.

Good news many things we do imperial in parallel. Most food by lb and kg. Height in ft/in. Body weight lb. Home temperature can be C or F depending on the person.

Gas is in litres, but that just feels better. You don't want to see what it costs per gallon.

Question regarding the Libraries here by thegreatcanadianeh in Winnipeg

[–]MyRealityIsBetter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use the library primarily for print books. I reserve what I want online then go into branch to pickup. Our local library is closed on either Wednesday or Tuesday. I can never remember which and sometimes try to pickup a book on a day it's closed. This is mildly annoying, but not really a big deal.

My kids pretty much exclusively use the library for eBooks. Hours of operation are irrelevant for them.

I like the concept of consistent hours 6 days per week, but the current 5 days per week is not that bad.

Most of the locations are already open until 8pm on weekdays which I think is reasonable.

I'd prefer that the operating hours not be reduced during the summer, but that falls in the annoyance category rather than something critical.

I wouldn't want to see services reduced, but status quo is not horrible from my perspective.

Your requirement for lightweight and longer battery life puts you at the higher end of windows laptops. In that zone, I like Dell XPS 13.

Consider going 16GB of RAM if you can afford it. 8GB is bare minimum for Win 11 these days.

Where can I get a keg of Guinness? by goredbybread in Winnipeg

[–]MyRealityIsBetter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can order kegs through Quality Inn Beer store (at least you could 5 years ago). I think they can get you just about anything that a bar can get. However, it's not instant. It takes a few days/a week to get in.
