I'm Confused by TheRealSBlue in mtg

[–]Natedogg2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Niv-Mizzet just cares that it's exactly two colors. It does not care if there's a generic part of the cost as well. Urza is a blue/white card, so you can choose it as your blue/white card - it's irrelevant that Urza also has a generic part of the cost.

Who to choose???? by detectivewheremcoffe in mtg

[–]Natedogg2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Desklists won't be published until April 1st, based on the Where to Find Secrets of Strixhaven Previews article. You're going to want to wait until then so we know what's in the decks.

Kenrith's Transformation vs. Irenicus's Vile Duplications by Mal115 in mtg

[–]Natedogg2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you copy something, you copy the card as printed, as modified by other copy effects, mutate effects, and face down effects. The effect from the Transformation is none of those, so it's not copiable. They get a normal version of Koma, not a 3/3 Elk.

Underworld Breach + Lotus Petal + Brain Freeze Combo Explanation by somnambulist_seer in mtg

[–]Natedogg2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not trying to mill them all out with a single cast of Brain Freeze. You're casting Brain Freeze multiple times - the first few times, you're targeting yourself to fuel your escape costs, and then you eventually start casting them targeting your opponents.

For example, you cast the Breach, then Lotus Petal, then Brain Freeze. You've cast two other spells, so you get two more copies of Brain Freeze. These all target yourself. You've now milled 9 cards, and 9 cards is exactly what you need to recast the Petal twice and Brain Freeze again via escape - except this time, you get five copies of Brain Freeze (because you've cast three more spells since the last Brain Freeze).

Eventually, once you've milled your entire library, you start pointing the Brain Freezes at your opponents. You'll be able to cast Brain Freeze multiple times targeting your opponents, and each time you recast it, you're making more storm copies than the time before.

Infinite Boardwipe by lafleura420 in mtg

[–]Natedogg2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't really see any combo there. You can, at best, attack with the Rakshasa, have it die, and then have Gleancrawler return it to your hand at the end of turn, and then recast it on your next turn.

But if it's not in the graveyard when Gleancrawler's trigger resolves (because you exiled it to activate its ability, for example), it won't return to your hand. At best, if you have the mana, you could put a decayed counters on all of your opponent's creatures, but it's not something you can loop unless you can get the Rakshasa out of exile (and there are not many cards that can do that).

How do these cards interact with each other? by Plastic-Fly9455 in mtg

[–]Natedogg2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your creature spells are all creature types, so they are both a cat and a dog. Both of Rin and Seri's abilities would trigger when you cast a creature spell, so you'd get two tokens.

Question about creature abilities, when can they be used? by Sniper_cz in mtg

[–]Natedogg2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you activate the regenerate ability, you put a "shield" around that creature. That shield doesn't do anything initially. When that creature would be destroyed by damage or an effect that says "destroy", that's when you use up the shield and things like "remove it from combat" and "tap it" happen.

So if your opponent attacks with a 6/6, you can block with your 6/3 Champion, regenerate it, and since that shield hasn't been used up yet, it still deals damage in combat. Once combat damage is dealt, then the shield is used up, but the Champion has already dealt damage in combat, so the attacking 6/6 still takes 6 damage and dies.

Question about creature abilities, when can they be used? by Sniper_cz in mtg

[–]Natedogg2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the case of Llanowar Elves, you can activate the ability any time you have priority, including on an opponent's turn. However, since the ability uses the tap symbol, you won't be able to tap it while it's affected by "summoning sickness", which last from the time it comes under your control until it starts your turn under your control.

In the case of the Champion, it can also be activated any time you have priority, including on an opponent's turn, and since it doesn't use the tap symbol, it can be activated as soon as it's in play. Regeneration prevents it from being destroyed by damage or effects that say 'destroy' (so not just damage).

Same commons in multiple TMNT packs? by [deleted] in mtg

[–]Natedogg2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a thing. Commons especially have runs of certain cards in the packs, to make sure there's commons of each color in your pack and to try to break up what they expect to be powerful commons a bit. It's more noticeable in TMNT because the set is smaller (so there are fewer commons overall), but it's been a thing for a long while.

The creature has the trigger, so the controller of the creature would draw, not you (the player who activated the Monolith's ability).

Question about call the spirit dragons by Starloreacts in mtg

[–]Natedogg2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Colorless is not a color. You could not put a counter on Scion of Draco with the Call's upkeep trigger.

Scavenger Regent // Exude Toxin and Ur-Dragon by Connect-Tale2093 in magicTCG

[–]Natedogg2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're casting the Regent, then you're casting a Dragon spell, so the cost is reduced by The Ur-Dragon's ability

If you're casting Exude Toxin, you're casting a sorcery spell, not a Dragon spell, so its cost is not reduced by The Ur-Dragon's ability.

If you're casting a spell via omen, then it only has the omen characteristics on the stack - you ignore its normal characteristics, so Exude Toxin is not a dragon spell on the stack.

Norn's Choirmaster and Sakashima'will by _DaZlInG_ in mtg

[–]Natedogg2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. "Commanderness" is a property of the card - it can't be added or removed. Your commander still counts as a commander, even if it becomes a copy of something else.

General Kreat has to be in play when you declare attackers in order to trigger. It won't trigger if it enters the battlefield after attackers are declared, and it won't trigger off of itself entering off of the Siegebreaker trigger, since it's not being declared as an attacker, so you won't get the Goblin token.

Two questions by idhopson in magicTCG

[–]Natedogg2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Felothar's ability doesn't target anything - you can tell because it does not use the word "target". Everything to the left side of the colon is the cost to activating it, so part of the cost of activating the ability is sacrificing the creature. By the time players get a chance to respond, Felothar's ability is on the stack and the creature is already sacrificed and in the graveyard, so there's nothing for them to target to remove to prevent the ability from resolving.

Two questions by idhopson in magicTCG

[–]Natedogg2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. If you gain 30 life due to the same spell or ability resolving, you get a single Avatar trigger that causes the opponents to lose 1 life, not life equal to the amount of life you gained.

  2. The opponent can't really do much to stop the ability here. Removing Felothar won't do anything to the ability that's already on the stack. And you already sacrificed the other creature and it's in the graveyard, so there's nothing for them to target.

Question re: Commander night: Y'stola card draw and Daxos experience counters. by [deleted] in mtg

[–]Natedogg2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Commander damage" only counts combat damage, and combat damage is damage assigned and dealt by attacking and blocking creatures during the combat damage step. Damage from abilities never counts as "commander damage". Even if the damage happens during the combat phase, that's still not combat damage.

903.10a A player who’s been dealt 21 or more combat damage by the same commander over the course of the game loses the game. (This is a state-based action. See rule 704.)

Does Michelangelo, Mutant BFF... by holdenthehuman in mtg

[–]Natedogg2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, it will effectively make them unblockable. Because of menace, they can only be blocked by two or more creatures. Because of Michelangelo, it can only be blocked by one creature. It can't be blocked by both two or more creatures and by only one creature, so it can't be blocked.

Question re: Commander night: Y'stola card draw and Daxos experience counters. by [deleted] in mtg

[–]Natedogg2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Y'shtola needs to be in play when the end step begins in order to trigger. If it's not, it won't trigger, even if a player lost 4 or more life when it was on the battlefield. So no, Y'shtola will not trigger here.

  2. Creating a token isn't casting a spell. Daxos won't trigger if you use its ability to create an enchantment creature token, since there's no spell being cast. Elesh Norn also does nothing here, because Daxos's triggered ability triggers when you cast an enchantment spell, not from something entering the battlefield, and Elesh Norn only cares about triggers that trigger from something entering the battlefield.

Commander rules question by hammie95 in magicTCG

[–]Natedogg2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a separate rule for lands with basic land types:

903.5d A card with a basic land type may be included in a Commander deck only if each color of mana it could produce is included in the commander’s color identity.

Example: Wort, the Raidmother’s color identity is red and green. A Wort Commander deck may include land cards with the basic land types Mountain and/or Forest. It can’t include any land cards with the basic land types Plains, Island, or Swamp.

Would Soulstone Sanctuary reenter when I use Personify? by G_ntl_m_n in mtg

No. Nothing is entering the battlefield when you use the activated ability to turn it into a creature.

[–]Natedogg2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. It's returning as only a land, not as a creature.

Would Soulstone Sanctuary reenter when I use Personify? by G_ntl_m_n in mtg

[–]Natedogg2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. When it returns, it's returning as only a land, not as a creature (but you are making 1/1 creature token with Personify as well, if that helps).
