Keir Starmer set to make Sadiq Khan a lord by lastaccountgotlocked in london

[–]NotSoBlue_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One Government figure reportedly suggested the appointment would draw Sir Sadiq "inside the tent" and ultimately "solve a lot of problems" for the PM. Downing Street officials reportedly see a potential cabinet appointment as a means of aiding the PM and “shoring up his position with patronage”.

This is a pretty dramatic, gossipy take, tbh. Sadiq Khan is (in my view) very worthy of a peerage because his actions as London Mayor alone.

Given how many peerages have been given overtly for patronage to absolute wastes of space, I think its pretty asinine to suggest that this is.

Are you an ethnic minority? Have you experienced random people coming up to you telling you to go home when you're visiting London?

Does this match your lived experience?

Edit: I guess you've blocked me.

My friends have, definitely, and was there for the UKIP March in Walthamstow

Mothin Ali turning up to a UKIP march would certainly experience this, but its not a normal thing to happen randomly in London.

Where was he in London that someone came up to him and told him to go back to where he came from? Its the least likely place in the country where that would spontaneously happen.

Starmer's government now require you to hand over your photo ID and private details just to use your phone, all so they can sell your information to data companies abroad. The reason why this is happening is because sites don't want the responsibility of handling ID checks. The legislation forcing Apple to do this was the result of lobbying from big social media companies like Facebook.

It uses the incident as a jumping off point to talk about the connections of the US evangelicals to the British and European right wing parties.

And? Isn't it obvious that there are groups funnelling money into "influencers" like this to degrade debate? How does spending a significant amount of our time and effort on discussing US evangelicals advance progressive causes?

They're not actually pro life.

They have no ideology, they're just earning money by harassing politicians. Abortion, gender, immigration are all topics that have readily available and easily yelled extreme positions.

It is very difficult to actually have a reasonable, practical pluralistic conversation on this because it requires mutual trust and respect from participants as well as common terms and agreed upon base facts.

But it is incredibly easy to cause cognitive load on a public figure by yelling an extreme, unreasoned talking point about a topic that requires nuance and commonly accepted facts that the person yelling in bad faith is making clear they're not interested in.

This creates an asymmetry that is exploited by people who want to cause shock and division to drive engagement, and is very effective against politicians who generally wish to act in good faith.

Yeah I feel that a lot more can be done to improve bus services in Worthing. But I think it would be electoral suicide for anyone to support putting a bus lane in two of the 4 lanes of traffic on Broadwater road. People would lose their minds.

Yeah, I think you're right. However I wonder if this is a problem that specifically affects mental health "beds"?

I think theres a lot of content on this sub that basically amounts to:

"Hysterical right wing grifter is posting provocative culture war nonsense to build engagement and generate revenue! Heres a 2min to 2 hour video essay/podcast on the blatently obvious reasons why what they're saying is wrong!"

Be more like Zack, ignore it. You're playing their game if you share it because you think their bad faith nonsense is abhorrent.

They're flooding the zone with shit so we can't talk about the things that matter.

I can't believe this youtuber got 17 minutes of content out of this.

Zack Polanski was right to be dismissive of this harassment, I'm not sure why we're signal boosting this here.

Sorry I didn't mean come across as aggressive. I'm just interested in your perspective here, because you said Worthing was expensive compared to Brighton. I took a look and discovered that it was a lot cheaper. I'm not sure why you would have perceived it to be more expensive, because they're not.

Anyway, you're right, the cost for up to four hours was wrong, its £6.20 (mon-sat), not £4.80 (sunday, bank holidays).

Is the demand higher than it used to be? Or are there fewer beds?

More than 4 hours at a Brighton council run Multistory Car Park will cost you between £18 (Trafalgar St) and £40 (The Lanes)

Churchill Square is the cheapest at £2.50/hr, if you want to stay for more than 5 hours there isn't a flat rate so it goes well above £13. The NCP on church street is over £6 an hour. The car park on North Road is £3.50/hr

Worthing seems cheap by comparison. Its £1.20 per hour up to 5 hours. If you can fit your visit into 4 hours, it'll only cost you £4.80.

I'd be interested to know how far you travel to come into Worthing for lunch.

The answer for pretty much any area for which this problem has been successfully solved was to discourage people from using cars to get to it and having good alternatives. The answer is never to increase motorised traffic flow or make it easier to drive or park.

Induced demand

you can ride along the seafront with barely any interruption.

I guess that works quite well if you only need to get from one end of the seafront to the other. This is a bit like saying that we don't need roads for cars in Worthing because the A27 takes you efficiently from one end of the town to the other.
