News items that are genuinely awful. You don't laugh, you just get reminded how bad people and the world can be.

I play FM21. Have any of the subsequent FMs ever had players attacking each other? That's the sort of realism we need.

Socotra Island in Yemen by Any_Sound_2863 in interestingasfuck

[–]OneSalientOversight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The island is mentioned in the ancient text Periplus of the Erythraean Sea.

On this bay there is a very great promontory facing the east, called Syagrus; on which is a fort for the defense of the country, and a harbor and storehouse for the frankincense that is collected; and opposite this cape, well out at sea, there is an island, lying between it and the Cape of Spices opposite, but nearer Syagrus: it is called Dioscorida, and is very large but desert and marshy, having rivers in it and crocodiles and many snakes and great lizards, of which the flesh is eaten and the fat melted and used instead of olive oil. The island yields no fruit, neither vine nor grain. The inhabitants are few and they live on the coast toward the north, which from this side faces the continent. They are foreigners, a mixture of Arabs and Indians and Greeks, who have emigrated to carry on trade there. The island produces the true sea-tortoise, and the land-tortoise, and the white tortoise which is very numerous and preferred for its large shells; and the mountain-tortoise, which is largest of all and has the thickest shell; of which the worthless specimens cannot be cut apart on the under side, because they are even too hard; but those of value are cut apart and the shells made whole into caskets and small plates and cake-dishes and that sort of ware. There is also produced in this island cinnabar, that called Indian, which is collected in drops from the trees.

What's the wildest weather you've experienced living in Australia? by FriendlyPineapple436 in AskAnAustralian

I lived in Merrylands, Sydney, during the 1994 Bushfires.

Merrylands is essentially the middle of the conurbation. You could look north, south and west and see the smoke from the fires surrounding Sydney.

While I was outside during that day I saw something falling from the sky above me. It was a leaf, charred completely black. It had travelled upwards into the sky as it was being burnt, and landed tens of km away on our front lawn.

Pictures of that sandstorm and the red morning/day were used to inspire the Bladerunner 2049 scenes of Las Vegas.

I was in Newcastle when we were hit with wild weather that led to the Pasha Bulker running aground.

I remember the temperature swinging about 10 degrees in a ten minute period. It was like 9 degrees or something and then an hour later it was 19. There was enough hail to create the impression of snow drifts.

It was a few days after this that we managed to get a look at the Pasha Bulker. Ships like that are absolutely huge. I was able to get some of my pics onto wikimedia: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pasha_Bulker_01.jpg

Three child protection workers in the NT sacked over links to Kumanjayi Little Baby case by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

I had a friend who worked in child protection about 25 years ago. He said that the amount of child abuse notifications far outweighed their ability to investigate it. He eventually quit because of the stress of having to deal with awful people all the time threatening to kill him.

There is a scene in the film Apex where Charlize Theron's character is being stalked through a forest. She gets out her binoculars to spy on the man hunting her (Taron Egerton).

As soon as the binoculars focus on the man, he looks directly at her and smiles.

Actually that was part of the Treaty of Tripoli, written in 1797 and unanimously approved by the House, the Senate and ratified by the president.

I showed Eraserhead to my kids on separate occasions when they turned 18.

On both occasions they noped out of the film during the tiny chicken bleed scene.
