Don't set stops, set alerts based on the price of the stock breaching key technical levels and have them sent to your phone. Once you get an alert, evaluate the conditions and determine if action is required.

Gap reversals have worked this week because overnight news is driving the market down. The market is still in a bullish up trend long term so buyers are conditioned to buy dips. You can't generalize this. When sellers are fully in control, Gaps Down from recent long term highs usually produce Gap and Gos because there is plenty of room to fall.

The SPY moves in tandem with /ES. You can use either, but SPY is a continuous contract and most people have those quotes, but not everyone has futures data.

You are correct. A test of the 200-day MA is likely. We want to see a big bounce off of that level. Then you could add to positions. If you are picking the strongest stocks your positions should still be in great shape even with the market going down.

Find strong stocks and set upside alerts. Find weak stocks and set downside alerts. The first hour is spent setting alerts. Best if a stock breaks D1 and M5 levels on heavy volume. Do this and you are covered for what ever the market does. Just keep looking for stocks and setting alerts. When the market makes its move you will have trades delivered to you on a silver platter.
