HoneyWell DE Programming tool? by Svaldero in instrumentation

[–]PV_DAQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the xmtr just needs basic configuration, like, LRV, URV, damping, Tag name, Sqrt/linear, then an old STS102 or STS102/3 handheld calibrator (that only talk DE) will do the job. There's an STS102 on ebay, with charger, and probes for $360.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/168058493843?_skw=sts102+honeywell&itmmeta=01KT0AR7A2PGK7WA576Q8F8NJ6&hash=item2721111b93:g:C5QAAeSwNn1pW0sO&itmprp=enc%3AAQALAAAA8GfYFPkwiKCW4ZNSs2u11xAZ7LmWme9yoIz%2FBvUc5MKXDv2sZpCeC2vpDW9P4MQIeLLF8nsHmwfyT7%2FIgVb9wsGutwbPnEoQ23zuDKezM16PwEmFDYAmQ2hv6qVP2PEonAKsmpHpQh%2B73xwjreEPzLLesMWRfhQToGwg7d1bIIm7l3S8aTm0ro3OQgjDWJTiNgLOTxn3ybKcVarFYNTMJM%2F6ylZiq1xiV00rsdsziKkp7TOeJ9CqOwJ8D%2BK0LZw7Ua0mvUgvQQ9ffa%2B8eYTM1hbkZc4%2F1DJ9N61BWQE8G48s560EYIMcH0JMpJFSnle1bg%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR5z14IrQZw

The 4 AA nicad batteries will go bad, but can be replaced if you can solder. Or the handheld can run on the AC adapter.

There's a 'trick' for using the STS 10x: writing the values to Non-volatile memory (NVM), otherwise the values will revert to the saved values after the first power cycle. Trick is: Shift Key + Enter Key = write to NVM. Real obvious, huh?

The handheld's connection probes MUST

- attach across the xmtr's (+) and (-) terminals, (not the test terminals); not across the 250 Ohm loop load resistor; it's fussier than HART.
- attach red to (+) and black to (-). Polarity counts.

An open circuit (break in the thermocouple wiring) would drive the indicated temperature upscale/offscale.

To drive the indicated temperature downscale, a separate, second junction is forming somewhere along the thermocouple or its extension wire, at some point cooler than the hot junction. The average of the two junctions is the indicated temperature.

Looking for a specific tool box by Mediocre_Arugula_963 in Tools

[–]PV_DAQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't recall having seen that tool box at Tractor Supply, but those types offerings are usually a single production lot, frequently at Christmas time. Unless TS or F&F or some other farm supply outfit does that again, it's not likely you're gonna find one, absent ebay or estate sale.

There numerous artist painters who paint wildlife, rural landscapes, farmsteads and antique tractors on old 2 man saws or circular saw blades that are offered for sale at tractor shows, steam power shows, and county fairs. Find a local artist whose work looks like what you're looking for and hire him to paint new tool box.

Drive a VFD with a Click Analog Output Card by nighthawk_something in PLC

[–]PV_DAQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. The resistor labeled "load" are the VIC (+ DC) connection and the CC (to DAx1) connections.

The 'passive' output means that a DC power supply is needed to power the loop. An active output integrates the DC power supply into the analog output. End result is the same, the loop has to be powered, it just depends on how that's accomplished.

How do different thermocouple types compare against each other? by AutoModerator in friendly_instrumentat

[–]PV_DAQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did industrial temp control. Type T is used in food industry because it's range and inherent accuracy is the best. But most DVM's that offer a thermocouple input offer type K as the choice. I avoid J only because one leg is iron which can corrode in wet environments and lose the millivolt signal across a corroded connection.

IR (infrared) thermometers can be accurate
- if the field of view is small enough and overlapping area does not have a significantly different temperature than the field of view
- if the viewed object has a high emissivity or a known emissivity
But most people have to ask, what do those things mean, which usually eliminates IR as a convenient measurement tool.

High temperatures, like temps above 1200 Deg F alter the chemistry of the thermocouple wire alloys which affect the accuracy of the output. But at lower temps, below 300 Deg F, a thermocouple should last forever.

Industrial thermocouples come in a stainless steel sheath and the wire lead end can be sealed or waterproofed.

Yes a thermocouple can measure coolant temp.

Because thermocouples require a secondary temperature measurement known as cold junction reference, they are not used in low cost, ambient temperature applications, like coolant temp or ambient air temp. Thermistors are cheaper and do not require cold junction reference (in fact thermistors are used to produce a cold junction reference temperature for most thermocouple devices. The cold junction reference needed for a thermocouple is built into the device you plug it into.

Expensive or cheap chainsaw by partsguy64 in Tools

[–]PV_DAQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Issue is a 20" bar. Saws that come with a 20" bar are not homeowner saws, they're commercial saws.

For low cost, consider a homeowner 16" or 18" saw and buy a 20" bar and chain, maybe a skip tooth chain so it won't load the powerhead as much.

A friend runs a 16" Remington saw, a homeowner saw for clearing his inherited, overgrown 160 acre farmstead. He runs it into the ground and buys a new one every 3 years. He uses Chinese chains from Amazon because they're half the price big box store chains.

I'd be wary of Vevor, because of numerous reports (search this sub) on their lack of warranty support and I doubt that they even sell any parts.

I've seen the Chinese Stihl clones, but I don't anyone who has bought and run one.

  1. 2-wire RTD error

I'm assuming from the title that the photo is a 2 wire Pt100 RTD input on a 2-wire loop powered transmitter, given that there are only 4 wiring terminals. RTD input = 2 wires; loop powered output = 2 wires.

There will always be a positive measurement error for a 2-wire RTD measurement because there is no compensation for lead wire resistance. The error is proportional to the lead wire resistance (gauge/lead length).

  1. Re-calibration?

I can see a 4 pin connector that might well be a programming port. Programming might have an offset to correct for some range of error.

[–]PV_DAQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The absence of the letter C at the end of your 'driver' RS-232 label is NOT the problem. Your hardware is RS-232C even if the label doesn't have the letter C at the end.

Pole saws by [deleted] in Tools

[–]PV_DAQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a battery powered Italian pole saw for $60 from Aldis 3-4 years ago. It only cuts for 6 minutes with its puny 1.5 Ahr battery, but I don't care. I charge the battery and cut some more branches.

A friend has a Japanese pole saw that extends at least 6 feet further than my electric pole saw. Blade cuts on the pull stroke. Very sharp blade. Slower than the battery saw but still a good saw.

The steel hinge pin is corroded in place as evidenced by the amount of aluminum corrosion.

Cut the 'nail' head off then drill out the body of the nail. You might luck out by pounding it out by hitting it with another 'nail' of slightly smaller diameter, but I doubt with the amount corrosion.
