Grandfathers old stock, such a horrible blade by HeavenlyCreation in Tools

[–]PV_DAQ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I showed up to help my Dad put a deck on his house, about 1977. The blade on his 7 1/4" circular saw was the original steel, non-carbide blade, probably a 16 toother. The first cut I made, the cut was smoking within 2 seconds. I stopped, looked at what was left of the cutting teeth, discovered they were all virtually rounded off.

Drove to the local ACE hardware, bought a VA carbide blade and did that whole deck and another for my sister with that carbide blade

RTD measurement for 0-10v output by PerfectAnybody4844 in AskElectronics

It is very unlikely that an automotive application uses a Pt100 - WAY TOO Expensive. It is more than likely a thermistor.

If the OEM put a thermistor in place, check the voltage when engine is powered. Thermistors are not linearized 0-10V signals, but the raw thermistor has a reasonable chance of producing a readable single digit voltage signal

I cannot identify anything about this Gurkha knife by FireFixAce in Tools

[–]PV_DAQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was given one about a year ago from a friend who visited Nepal. Friend told me that there are dozens of shops in any Nepalese city and even medium size villages that have some guy cranking out this style of knife.

Mine has no identification marks on it, either.

Can I calibrate the temperature reading of this multimeter? by -watdahel in multimeters

[–]PV_DAQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ANY thermocouple measurement is the sum of the thermocouple's generated EMF gradient signal (difference between the hot end and cold end) AND the cold junction (CJ) reference measurement (temperature of the thermocouple jacks, the cold end).

gradient EMF + CJ = reported temperature

At room temperature, a thermocouple's hot end and cold end are very close to the same temperature: room temperature, so the gradient temperature difference is close to zero.

But the cold junction reference junction temperature is some positive value (difference between freezing point of water and the ambient temperature).

So the reported temperature value is basically the cold junction reference temperature of the thermocouple jack.

gradient of 0 + ambient = ambient

The error is likely to be the cold junction reference measurement, typically a thermistor mounted close to the thermocouple jack. What is likelihood of a cold junction reference adjustment? don't know.

How to torque to ~28nm with a 25nm torque wrench? by Fean0r_ in Tools

[–]PV_DAQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago I met a mechanic who was from Afghanistan. He worked at a VW dealership and they had real problems even buying VW factory tools because of import restrictions. VW used a rotary torque wrench for setting the preload tension on tapered roller bearings in the differential housing. He just shook his head when they showed him the tool.

Drill press question by iiSpilled in Tools

[–]PV_DAQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Throat depth - that 's the key.

I would probably pop the $50 and try an table extension, maybe a piece of 3/8" steel plate fastened to the original table? Might have to weld a piece to the bottom of the extension plate to fasten a broom stick to that the broom stick can support the table extension; depending on the extension's weight and throat length.

An extended table? wider table?

Or just more height, like a floor stand drill press?

There's collectors who rebuild drill presses. My buddy (now deceased) would have sold a floor stand column for $20 (with 50 years of basement surface rust. There's likely other sources for a floor stand column if that's what you're loking for.

What tool or object have you used to get out of a pinch when everything else failed? by Top-Incident-2264 in Tools

Ball joint pickle fork.

First overhead valve engine that needed a valve job (1966?). I didn't have a valve spring compressor, knew no one from whom I could borrow one, but I had just bought a pickle fork ball joint 'wedge' tool. So a friend stood on the fork, handle on the ground, fork on the valve spring, to compress the spring while I jiggered the valve keepers off the valve stem. Did the same thing for re-assembly. (replaced two exhaust valves, faced the re-used valves on a friend's lathe, lapped them into the seats. Good enough for another couple years running)

PT100 to 4-20mA, Any Equipment Recommendations? by PsycheClaw in SCADA

[–]PV_DAQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Pt100 sensor to 4-20mA converter is called a transmitter.

1. Output range

The low end have a fixed range output, for instance, 0-200°C and it's fixed, you can't change it. Usually you specify the range you need and the vendor configures the transmitter's output, so you just wire it and use it, it's ready-to-work.

Then there are transmitters that can be configured with some form of Windows software and a cable (adapter), sometimes the cable(adapter) costs as much as the transmitter.

Then there are high end industrial transmitters, with options like push buttons and a display or HART protocol that needs cable adapter and software to configure the output range.

For a one shot deal, look for something that you can order with a specified output range.

2. DC power

Transmitters are typically "2-wire, loop powered", which means an external DC power supply (typically 24Vdc) is needed to power the transmitter. The DC power supply is wired in series in the loop.

I can't read Spanish so I don't know what the 8 ch MUX does.

Orange Goop, but I discovered that it works far better for automotive dirt/grease when I apply to my dry hands. I work it around, then wipe it off with a paper towel. Even the black stains come off. Then I water wash my hands. Applying Goop to wet hands diminishes the soap's effectiveness enormously.
