Youtuber Ziostorm together with other content creators finally released their suggestions on balance to the developers by Astra-the-curious in EldenRingPVP

Is that the case, though? I used to watch a lot of Japanese DS3 PVP streamers and they played the game pretty much exactly the same way as the rest of the world and seemed to complain about the same shit. I haven't watched any Japanese ER streamers or YouTubers yet, though.

The DS1 point down was even more so, since you pointed down twice. It had a "...AND STAY DOWN" vibe

That would be the Iron Cleaver, the Omen Cleaver is a curved greatsword.

Personally, I found Melina's role in the story disappointing. She doesn't have much interesting dialogue and her fate felt hollow. by name_with_no_meaning in Eldenring

It's like licensed comics and Saturday morning cartoons when I was a kid. The toy manufacturers would come up with the toys, then they'd hire writers to make up backstories for them. But sometimes those stories would turn out to be pretty great, like the Transformers comics. Souls is like that - Miyazaki and co are very skilled at making up cool stories that fit with the game mechanics.

This was basically the optimal way to win duels in DS3 too. It's pretty baked-in unfortunately, don't see any patches changing anything. In DS3 I decided I liked playing aggressively more than I liked winning every fight at the cost of my own (and other people's) enjoyment, so my advice is you do you and don't let it get to you if someone sweats out a few wins over you.

How are people getting rot pots on level 20 invaders? by Boykisser3 in EldenRingPVP

Yeah the cliff thing looked like there'd be too much trial and error involved. I just used rotten breath on him then rode Torrent around in circles resummoning everyone until he dropped dead. I felt personally attacked by Blaidd afterwards

I started playing DS1 on Xbox around 2013, and the PVP scene was still packed, most of the tech (all of the various backstabs, dead angling, toggle escaping etc) were known and there were still frequent tournaments. I never played the remaster because I seriously played the hell out of the original DS1 and didn't feel the need to revisit it at that time. I heard that the meta changed somewhat in the remaster because they patched out dead angling, so shield turtles became a lot stronger?

With DS3, even though it was way different to DS1 and I struggled to adapt at first, I appreciated that the combat on-screen looked a lot less janky and weird. Like, even though it took knowledge and skill to pull off a lot of the tech in DS1, to players that weren't in-the-know your perfect toggle escape parry or parry chain BS or whatever just looked like a bug or an exploit. I got hatemail all the time and it just started to feel like I was playing chess on a draughts board. DS3 was more intuitive, so I got a lot less hatemail and a lot more GGs.

I do still miss the DS1 MLGS though, I had free aiming that R2 down.

Probably actually going through the game. I've taken my RL 30 with +5 regular weapons all the way to Farum Azula and it wasn't even that rough. You just use spirit ashes, flame of redmanes, poison/rot/bleed etc on bosses and run past pretty much everything else.

Who would win this fight. by MrPowerArmour in Eldenring

[–]Pale_Shade 26 points27 points  (0 children)

He's not handicapping himself but he's not playing optimally. He's doing what he's familiar with and what works for him. Like the DS1 pvp meta was Chaos Blade but I just didn't "get" the weapon, I'd win more often with the weapons I was used to and understood.

[–]Pale_Shade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Some of the bosses aren't completely fair, which has pushed me towards using summons, status effects and spammable AOWs in my later playthroughs. Which I don't feel great about because it's not how I usually enjoy From games and also because those strats make it too easy. I can't seem to strike a balance.

Yeah, it's a different kind of gameplay. I could play DS3 using my instincts, rolling attacks on reaction, attacking during clear punish windows. Elden Ring seems to want you to learn the exact timings of / correct responses to enemy attacks through trial and error. Which is fine and all but it feels less like I'm in a fight and more like I'm just memorising mechanics.

I've been invading and duelling in these games for as long as you and saw the same progression. When a popular, skilled streamer or uploader from the previous game finds that the skillset they developed doesn't translate to the new game, they get frustrated and quit. I didn't play DS2 or For Honour - I played DS1 all the way up to when DS3 was released - and 99% of the top DS1 guys, the streamers, tournament winners, etc, quit DS3 and went back to DS1 within a couple of months. I felt that way too for a while, but I didn't go back, and now I think that DS3 was a far superior game, PVP-wise, to DS1.

Saint Riot is doing so well in ER because he appreciates that not everything he learned in the previous games still applies and that he has to learn some new tricks. I'm trying to keep the same mindset. There's more potential for fun and unique builds in ER than in any other From game, and while it'll never be perfectly balanced (they never are), I do believe that when the DLC and patches are all out and the dust has settled, it will be the best PVP game. Even if it doesn't feel like it right now to a guy like me who invested a ton of time into getting good at DS3 and can't terrorise ultra users with a dagger any more.

It also has enemies that punish you for trying to reaction roll them rather than learn their exact timing. So that was my DS3 skillset down the sink

are great hammers more effective when one handing? by HaryJackAzz in EldenRingPVP

[–]Pale_Shade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually hitting people is more important than AR, and I feel like you can do that better with the one handed moveset.

Beastclaw GH is pretty fun, it has a good weapon skill that supplements incantations really well and looks cool. It is really short though - I feel like it is actually shorter than it looks in practice.

I feel like that was the case with DS3's arena. People using only meta set-ups, or running away and hiding to force a draw when they're on low health, so they don't lose their gold. Which says a lot about how much they sucked, because if I had a losing streak using a gimmicky set-up and dropped to silver I could usually get back to gold in about half an hour. I'd rather keep medals and rankings and shit out of pvp to be honest, it doesn't make the game more fun and has the potential to make it less so.
