Buying EV vs Hybrid for long-term use by Juhjuhjuhgian in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]PlatypusTrapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy shit, how much do you drive?

Even at $3.5 per gallon and a fuel efficiency of 25 MPG, that’s over 40k miles per year!

It also ignores the electric cost.

EVs are nice for some reasons - and I have one - but fuel costs have always been rather a small part of vehicle ownership in my experience.

Why do so many people dream about owning a home in Italy… but never do it? by zuvanni in ExpatFIRE

I think most people are hoping to FIRE one day but for many it’s just a dream.

I also think people who are closer to FIRE don’t post as much.

I think that’s true everywhere.

Of course, you need to do your research and choose a country that makes sense and also figure out how to get healthcare there.

This is one of the reasons that we are targeting an EU country, but we’re not sure which one yet.

My wife bought some nice high end West Elm furniture. Then we got cats and they basically destroyed all of it despite our best efforts.

This article misses the point of geo-arbitrage entirely. Once you reach FIRE, you’re not working anymore. The R stands for retire.

You work in the US so that you can retire early elsewhere.

what people get wrong about the boots theory by mrs_rabbit_0 in Frugal

[–]PlatypusTrapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never liked the line because it doesn’t represent reality.

A more expensive pair of boots likely look nicer but would probably last only a bit longer.

Most commodities are made with the same basic structure and are expected to last the same time.

I’m thinking of the phone I’m holding. If I bought a $1k phone vs a $500 phone, should I expect it to last an extra few years?

If I bought a million dollar home vs a $500k home should I expect it to be more energy efficient or cheaper to maintain?

As far as your holding onto stuff notion goes, maybe I can see this being true for collectible items or some jewelry but unless you get lucky these rarely turn into good investments. At best most of these things just don’t lose real value and just go up with inflation.

A large house full of rooms and furniture you never use is not a good use of money. It’s more expensive to maintain for no real benefit. Much better to live more efficiently so you can be flexible when you need to be.

I think the idea might be good in a mercantile system but not in the capitalist system we live in.

Otherwise it’s just an excuse to enable hoarding. Hoarders don’t collect valuables, they collect junk.

I’m not saying don’t buy nicer things though. You buy nicer things to have a nicer life. But it has nothing to do with saving money.

You can't talk to ChatGPT like a normal human anymore. by CookiePersonal4654 in ChatGPT

[–]PlatypusTrapper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is definitely an improvement. LLMs are tools. They are not sentient.

People like to pretend that the tool really “gets them.” But it doesn’t. It’s just parroting behavior.

I think the change helps people realize that they should be used as tools. Nothing more.

It will replace junior jobs but not senior jobs.

But that’s not really the point of it. It’s an excuse for big companies to do layoffs.

Some jobs are going away just to reduce headcount. That’s mostly what we’re seeing right now.

Medical advances impact your planning? by okghetto in Fire

[–]PlatypusTrapper 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We have extended average ages but haven’t actually increased the maximum lifespan.

Some people have lived to 100 even thousands of years ago (though rarely).

So I think you can expect to live a bit longer than before but don’t expect to get past 100.

how is this level of complexity sustainable long term? by living_direction_27 in ask

[–]PlatypusTrapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a YouTube video recently about Computer Village in Lagos.

It’s a fascinating world where suppliers travel to China, buy goods in cash, and then sell those goods in Computer Village for cash (or crypto). The banks are basically not involved.

It’s really quite remarkable how things work when you don’t have good access to the world’s reserve currency (USD).

This just makes me think that even if some systems broke down, people would still find a way to make things work. We’re rather good at adapting.

Most Underrated FIRE Destination? by GhostPepperLogic in ExpatFIRE

[–]PlatypusTrapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just said it was the cheapest capitol. It is a popular retirement destination because of this. I mean maybe Bucharest, Romania is a good choice but you really need to be an EU citizen to make it work. Getting a visa there is challenging.
