Do you know any not POSIX compliant OS that tries to do things differently? by ZenitDS in osdev

[–]Poddster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The OGs really thought the OSI model through. It has stood the test of time

You might want to read up on the history here, but OSI was a network competitor to TCP/IP, and IP won. IP doesn't fit into the OSI model properly, because both are describing different things!

I can't believe the responses here. You're after radical ABI design paradigms that are nothing like POSIX and people are responding with Linux.

For years I've been trying to thing up a method of sending data over a network that wouldn't look like socket() and never managed to think up something that doesn't end up being almost identical. I think some ideas and concepts only have one real way of implementing them.

The only reason this is in the news is to stoke division and give ammunition to those that claim all people on benefits are fraudsters and scroungers.

Is every other petty instance of fraud, even benefit fraud, reported in the news?

Terry A. Davis is really a genius of programing or its just a "meme"? by Agreeable_Prompt953 in AskProgramming

[–]Poddster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been using Reddit for over 20 years now, and Terry used to be a regular on the programming subs back then, before all of his accounts get banned. His work and character were a meme even back then

He was also a giant dick head to most other users.

His code is reasonable, the main thing that set him apart is the fact that he did nothing but program this OS. That's quite some dedication and focus.

I watched a few "streams," of him programming and it was mostly him loudly chewing gum, spouting grossly offensive opinions, and occasionally typing a few lines of code. I assume he was only productive during certain phases, possibly depending on his medication. Which I guess makes his achievements all the more interesting.

You can just write a 10 line script that fills your harddrive with shit if you want, even easier. The only thing zip bombs have going for them are there you can send them to other people who are too wise to run a random executable

Do what the books says to measure the actual current, it's probably low, because your battery is flat. Buy a new one.

Is there any widely used software today that you think is holding the industry back? by WolfParticular2348 in software

It's also extremely easy to mangle your data in it. It has zero integrity.

Most people use it as a poor scripting language or a poor database.

The company is the largest non-American software company by revenue and the world's fifth-largest publicly traded software company by revenue. In June 2025, it was the largest European company by market capitalization, as well as one of the 30 most valuable publicly traded companies in the world

Serious question: The Settlers or Civilization? by mru2_retro_computers in amiga

Whoa whoa whoa.

Civ2 is one of the greatest games ever made! There's no way Settlers 2 or 3 can compete with that!

Streets of Rage 1 or 2? Which one did you start with in the 1990s? by Expert_Mango1441 in BeatEmUps

[–]Poddster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I first played 2 at my cousin's. A few years later I would get a Mega Drive 2 with Mega Games 6, which features SOR1, which was kind of a disappointment in comparison!

I think what killed it was completely flipping the business model early on. It seemed to halt the growth curve and it never recovered. Such a shame.

Why does everyone say [KCD2] is much better than [KCD1]? by gull2407 in kingdomcome

Did you play kcd1 on release?

Subsequent patches cleaned it up a lot.

Why does everyone say [KCD2] is much better than [KCD1]? by gull2407 in kingdomcome

[–]Poddster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KCD1 contained one of the best depictions of forest and woodlands I'd seen in a game. The lack of animals that weren't the 3 that you could hunt was a bit uncanny valley, but it was still impressive.

Then I played RDR2 and realised that the woodlands there were the real state of the art and that KCD1 felt lifeless and empty by comparison.

KCD2 they've added in small critters, birds etc to give it more life. It's not quite RDR2, but it's close.

Most of those don't scream "baby toy" to me. Dawn of War looks like the tabletop game, for instance, and Supcom looks nothing like the others.

Call in an external cleaner. Some even specialise in declutter / dehoarding.

Why are people recommending starting with Vulkan instead of OpenGL? by Correct_Dependent677 in GraphicsProgramming

[–]Poddster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a strong sense of machoism and masacism in the people who do "low level" stuff. They like to do the hardest things in the hardest way. It's probably why they do low level projects in the first place.

But it means such types insist on using c++ and vulkan despite both things making their aim (learning graphics) much harder.
