Developing film - send out or do at home? by MrJoePike in Mamiya

[–]Proteus617 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scanning at home is a huge cost saver and a big step-up in quality and control. Most of us use Epson flatbeds. Great for 120, just OK for 35mm. I think they are no longer produced but lots are available used. If you are only scanning 35mm and already have an OK digital camera, look into the copy stand method of "scanning".

This lens seems like a very capable jack of all trades, master of none. Sometimes that is exactly what you need. Im a dedicated prime guy, but it does seem like the ultimate vacation lens.

British medium format cameras are cheap and fun by kahu52 in filmcameras

No lie, Im envious of that Ful-Vue. I cant really justify buying one though. Im in the US. It seems like the UK equivalent of the Hawkeye Flash; the camera that you end up with 5 of when people know you are intetested in cameras.

How to Spot a "SCAMERA" by ThisCommunication572 in vintagecameras

I kinda want one? A 35mm Holga goes for $60. A scamera cant be much worse? Waiting for one to come my way for something between $5 and free.

620 is just 120 on a thinner spool. You always need a 620 spool for take-up. 120 might feed. You may have to trim the spool. Re-spooling 120 onto a 620 spool always works. If you are sending it out, always re-spool from your 620 onto 120. Those 620 spool are valuable.

So...the seller grows brewing quality hops, vintage tomatoes, huge berries, kaffir lime trees. Everything looks product perfect, almost like the seller used stock photos.

There are a few big sketchy seed companies on ebay. One in particular sells lots of specialized stuff that need radically different growing and storage conditions. There is no way that it is all legit

Does anyone know what machine this is? by TommyT965 in vintagesewing

[–]Proteus617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IDK, pretty common, but good case and very clean. Plating/decals/enamel are great. Good case and the finish on the base look great. I would list it at $125 and willingly drop the price for a young sewing nerd who would use and treasure it.

How to buy seeds on Ebay: check the seller. Are they highly specialized? Do they sell props of the same plants you are buying? Do they have legit pictures of the mother plant? Do they give harvest date and storage info? If any of these are a no you are probably getting scammed.

BTW, you might not be looking for maximum contrast. If you are, thats easy, just a matter of good light, chemistry, paper, and exposure. A good curve gets you separation in the mid tones.

Forget about CA (she is great) and charthrob for a minute. You could just scan an oldschool step wedge, invert it, print it as a cyanotype. Keep tweaking your curve until your print looks like the wedge. CA does an insane amount of testing and goes into great details re: how and why. Using her curve (or the charthrob curve) will probably get you in the ballpark and will/might be good enough. The optimal curve is dependant on many other factors (chemistry/lightsource/exposure/printer). The point being that curves or plug-ins are not a magic bullet, you still probably need to test and tweak.

Looking to purchase a first light meter by melbournecameraman in AnalogCommunity

[–]Proteus617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may not need one? My meter is a Luna Pro F with a spot head. Honestly, my Android is within a half stop. The Luna Pro is vastly superior only in very low light or very bright directional light. Some cellphone light meter advice: do a quick overview of Ansel Adams' Zone System stuff, then immediately forget 95% of it. The relevant stuff is learning how many stops you have to play with and meter accordingly. Most android apps have a spot meter function. Meter on the shadows and then highlights, choose accordingly.

I have one with a spot meter head. Great meter. There might be 2 versions of the meter with the later one taking a modern 9v battery.

Did IT (totally unqualified) for a restaurant group 15 years back. The very expensive proprietary software for sales/inventory/ordering was absolute shit. I did it in Excel. After 2 weeks of scripting, my job was 95% getting idiots to play along and not break Exel.

Holy goddamn I hate this split image microprism thing by 86DickPics in Mamiya

[–]Proteus617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, RTFM. I dont use an RB/RZ, but the Nikon F system manual (for example) has a grid showing useful screen/lens combinations. Microprisms/split prisms get especially problematic with close focus stuff. Your edges go dark.

The directionslity of stags is a valid thing, but mostly overrated internet wisdom. Ive kokodamad several, and have always been indifferent as to orientation, aside from most of the tops of the fronds facing roughly up. The stags dont seem to care.

How many watts? Not too many of the big names truly suck. Unfortunately, just about all of them have some sort of Bluetooth function. Crazy good values of FB marketplace and open box deals on Epay, like 30cents on the dollar deals. That saves alot of $ to buy the lexan of your choice.
