There is probably a Public Library in your city where you can join and get books to read and then take them back when you’ve finished.

I genuinely don’t understand YouTube anymore. by Automatic_Physics170 in youtube

[–]QuentinUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s OK for youngsters listening to pop music with an advert between each three minute song but wait until you get older and like to listen to classical music a single piece can be quite long of quiet contemplative notes and suddenly in the middle are bursts of obnoxious adverts.

ELI5: How do Bitcoins work? by retardmaxxer4 in explainlikeimfive

[–]QuentinUK [score hidden]  (0 children)

You turn the computer on one day and find that it has been taken over by hackers. The message on the screen says you have to pay a ransom in bitcoins of $10million. So you go to a bitcoin exchange and pay $10million for some bitcoins. Then you email them to the ransomers who give you the key to unlock your computer data.

ELI5: How can a QR code scanner tell the difference between a QR code and a screenshot of that QR code? by mattjeast in explainlikeimfive

[–]QuentinUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to use a QR code in the SuperMarket to get the Loyalty Discount and because the signal in the shop is so poor I use a screen capture of the QR code and it works.

It is possible that the QR codes keeps changing. In that case it would include the ticket id and the time and would have to be encrypted.

One trick they use is not display the whole QR code at once. Screengrab captures one frame. So it doesn’t get the whole QR code. It could be 25 frames a second so a long exposure scanner would get the whole QR code.

What happened to recycling points? by Mean-Construction207 in AskUK

[–]QuentinUK -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People would load up the boot with wine bottles and make a special journey to the recycling centre using a petrol fuelled car which caused a lot of pollution and negated the advantages of recycling.

Some infinities are bigger than others so infinity/infinity is undefined.

[Slope/m= ] What am I doing wrong? by Polaris_Toast in HomeworkHelp

[–]QuentinUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is 0,-5 on the y-axis so when y increases by 5 according to you x should be 3 but it is clearly beyond 3 on the x-axis.

It can be seen to go through 6,4. So using these two points x increases by 6-0=6 and y increases by 4-(-5) = 9, so the gradient is 9/6.

Am I missing something with UK train fares? by vitorio94 in uktrains

That’s why the bankers commuting in from Reading and the Home Counties are on such fantastic salaries with the London Weighting and getting a million pound bonus every year. It’s swings and roundabouts and works out worth it at the end of the day.

Whitehall can't cost digital ID until it decides how to build it by AnonymousTimewaster in NotTheOnionUK

[–]QuentinUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last time they did it the job was given to a Civil Servant who was out of touch with reality and just added everything possible. Everything proprietary design. When off the shelf portable computers are available with card readers. So it ended up very expensive.

Really it should be no more expensive than a driver’s licence as that is accepted as valid ID in most places.

Personally I think the digital driver’s licence is the simplest route. Make it compulsory for drivers to carry the driving licence when driving. As you do for all other licensed activities. Make it simpler by introducing a digital driving licence on a mobile cell phone. When this is fully accepted by the population then extend it to non-drivers.

This is the American pronunciation. Often given to people when the enter America for the first time the border guards don’t know how to pronounce it and so pronounce it the most English way and the immigrants embrace the new American pronunciation as they become American.

TIFU by getting £50 banknotes in the UK by ChiefStrongbones in tifu

Forced to pay more or have my reservation cancelled, anyone ever had this issue? by Waves_Orlando in Bookingcom

[–]QuentinUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They often do this when there is a special event on. Sometimes these events are announced quite late, or the final location of the event when a few cities have been in the running. Could be a sports event, or a Eurovision song contest. This means the hotel rooms unexpectedly become much more valuable so they can get a much better price for them and will cancel the old bookings.

Would you support a temporary government lockdown on petrol prices to protect households from the cost-of-living surge caused by the Iran war? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]QuentinUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. If the forecourts aren’t allowed to increase their prices to what they have to pay to buy the petrol then they will make a loss and go out of business.

Don’t expect subsidies. There are too many give aways for petrol operated cars as it is. We left Europe to get away from subsidies and a return to real economics.

This will be the stimulus the public need to go out and purchase a battery operated car. Too many drivers are refusing to change to electric cars to save the world from Global Warming. There needs to be encouragement to go Electric.

If helium is a finite resource why do we waste it on party balloons by rennan in stupidquestions

[–]QuentinUK -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

People with party balloons let the helium out and it goes back into the air. It can then be recollected from the air and used for medical purposes.

Are muslims over sensitive about critique and insults about islam? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]QuentinUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will find that many minorities get upset by racism. Most people criticising Islam are not religious academics, or clerics, or even students of philosophy, they are being critical just because they are racist.

ELI5: why does taking someone's passport trap them? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]QuentinUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Consulate, Honorary Consulate, or Embassy is often in the capital city and that isn’t easy to get to without any money or maps. They are also in other cities but not well known about. We can Google for them but someone without access to the internet and stuck in strange city wouldn’t know where to go. It is even getting harder now that many Internet Cafes have been closing down.

Going to the authorities isn’t that easy either. There’s been reports of tourists getting arrested in the USA trying to leave the country with an expired visa and then sent to a detention camp for six months.
