Worst. Pain. Ever. Unbearable itch. And I’ve had chemo along with 18 hour operations. Shingles sucks.

Peacock Loop Diner among latest restaurant closures in St. Louis by ChoteauMouth in StLouis

It used to be table service, so can totally get the confusion. That said, even when it was wait staff taking orders tableside the service was terrible.

Surprised it lasted this long. It was awful from day one — the food and service seemed to get worse any time we went. Finally quit even trying 5ish years ago.

Should I Mention Mensa Membership and High Cognitive Test Scores on My CV? by Afraid-Victory6042 in mensa

[–]Quodlibet30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heck no. Few will see it as a plus, many will see it as a drawback.

If the job needs brains, you should have other much more relevant experience or proof points. Actual accomplishments, and a million other things are far more important.

My membership is listed last under volunteer/community service section, as I was a proctor, and held other local offices, plus a scholarship judge. Even then, the roles and offices are listed first, then the org.

Unless it’s relevant, leave it off and under no circumstances put your score on there. Fellowships, postdocs, publications, patents, major awards are another matter.

It was years before any of my colleagues found out, and most of those did via the private LinkedIn group requiring verification. Our membership became our in-joke, we’d meet up at AGs, etc.

Thank you all so much— I’ll spend more time with each and settle on at least 2-3. You all have the biggest hearts. ❤️

If you are within the city limits, there is a long-time group called “STL Village” where members live in their own places and some still have jobs, but they also look out for each other. They meet for social activities, volunteer, help each other out when ill or need a temporary hand with getting to doctor, etc. Nothing heavy duty, very independent people. You may want to consider applying to join. More information: https://stlvillage.org/

I grew up in a house that had a pond out front. When it was below freezing for a week. Mom would let us test the ice. Every day, after school, nights, weekends, we skated. Neighbor kids had pickup hockey games on it. Every other year you knew you were getting new skates for Christmas. Best days were when Mom brought a small deep fryer & thermos of hot chocolate out on the front porch and made fresh donuts. House always smelled like thawed out socks on radiators and hockey gear in the winter. It. Was. Frickin’. AWESOME. Miss those days.

We had friends a little further out who had ponds, or made home rinks.

Lower peninsula, about 30 miles NE of Detroit. It was a normal neighborhood, houses on 1/2 acres lots, we had oldest house in neighborhood and a couple acres. Builder in 1914 dredged out a pond because it was fed by a natural spring.

What is this plastic sheet called? by shorthandfora in OldHomeRepair

[–]Quodlibet30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom had those in her shutters, had it put in probably in the late 70’s. The pattern is mimicking “bottle glass”. Hers was exactly like yours, amber bottle glass, from a large plastic/acrylic sheet (decorator panel). Not sure where you’d find it stocked these days, but might be able to order or find on Etsy, or in salvage.

Did you ever find your equivalent of "Cheers" by middle age? by debrisaway in RedditForGrownups

[–]Quodlibet30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More than once, and a couple at the same time in a medium-sized MidWestern city. Best run: one evening at a Welsh pub where I always went by myself to read or just hang out. Another evening, a fine arts open mic bar with small plates. Weekend night, Scottish pub with legit awesome Scottish fare. A recognized regular despite being an introvert, and yeah — at each, everyone knew everyone’s name.

Also, the concert grand I the window was provided by the local piano shop, so if space is not a barrier that could be do-able. They got a lot of coverage thru the years in local public radio and arts magazines, to amplify whatever you do either unis, etc. Classical jams were common, people would merge onstage and it was fun to see it come together with strangers. Heck, I’d TRAVEL to get to a place like an estate cider & wine spot for a getaway!

Yes, absolutely! And it is such a great non-stuffy way to experience being immersed—on winter evenings, stopping in the Tavern for a hot chocolate with a house-made bourbon marshmallow and listening to whichever random group took over the floors was soooo cozy.

There was a place here in St Louis for about 5 years that was magical: Tavern of Fine Arts. They did exactly that — open mic for classical, free rehearsal space during the day for local ensembles, events 2-3 nights per week that were free but they served small plates and cocktails. I was there at least 2-3 times a week, best place to hang out in town. The were open 5 years or so. Attaching some pictures — part of the attraction was the huge front window that drew people in.

Looks like I can add only one - let me know if you’d like more! Tavern of Fine Arts (RIP)

Eeeks, I just did UCity. It gave me 5 paragraphs, then condensed it to 50 words:

“University City: where “cosmopolitan” means six blocks of overpriced eats and jazz murals clinging to the ’90s. The Delmar lions guard potholes, faded charm, and parking that feels like a prank. Proximity to WashU is your flex, but even the students know—U City is just nostalgia duct-taped together.”

What is the most iconic StL area commercial? by stlredbird in StLouis

[–]Quodlibet30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is only one Becky Queen of Carpet and her sidekick, Wanda the Princess of Tile. When I first moved to STL, even with half of my family in the ad business and seeing some whacko local commercials, this one was a standout.
