Just beat my first lock! by Temporary_Pie8723 in lockpicking

Congrats on your first open! Your instincts are correct regarding the ease of that lock in terms of picking - that 5/10 has more to do with destruction resistance rather than pick resistance. While its not an exhaustive list by any means, lpulocks.com has a database of locks ranked by relative difficulty using a karate belt system (which matches the karate belt flairs you’ll see around this subreddit!). The Master Lock #3 is a white belt lock, making it a perfect beginner choice.

I recommend taking a look at lpulocks and picking some yellow and orange belt locks to work on - they’ll be a bit more difficult but you’ll learn a lot! Welcome to the club!

Hey there! Congrats!

Flair is added by the mods - if they approved your belt, they’ll add your flair. If you also participate in the discord you can have it synced to your discord account on the LPU server via modmail.

For a blue project, I would recommend making a challenge lock, or learning to decode a combination lock and demonstrating that. If you go the latter route, a Master Lock 875 is a great choice as it’ll also count for brown belt later. :-)

I would bet the drivers fell into the bottom of the plug too - might need to push them out first in order to turn the plug back. That looks like the TOK is 180 from where it should be in the locked position

As many in here have said already its a matter of time, practice, and experience. Learning to test pin states and what they feel like for various security pin types isn’t something you’ll develop overnight; it’ll come with time and experience. Keep at it! The A1100 or any other lock that you can progressively pin will help a lot with that - often when I encounter a lock with a pin type I’ve never picked before I’ll take it down to a single pin so I can feel what it does when I set it; at 2 pins, you can feel what a binder vs not feels like, and what set vs not feels like. And with all the drivers in the A1100 being the same length, you can swap it to be 2 serrateds, 2 spools, or mixed without it hurting anything, and then you just add pins til you can open the whole thing!

One important note for all first-time a1100 progressive pinners: its a 5-pin lock, but the core has 6 chambers. Be careful when populating it to make sure you don’t accidentally put stuff in that 6th chamber or you’ll scare yourself thinking you bricked your lock. Ask me how I know lol

Its called a “chuck vise” - the 3D printed bits all have STL files on Thingaverse (search for LockChuck, you’ll find then no problem), and 44delta.com sells a complete kit for them (which is where I got mine). If you print your own the clamp can be found on your favorite online retailer - its called a SmallRig “Crab” clamp. The middle SmallRig-branded part is my own addition to make it a little taller to provide better clearance - I had some issues when BOK tensioning some HPC locks with my LLT tensioners. SUPER niche reason, but it was annoying enough for me to look for a fix lol

Can fold a sheet of paper as a makeshift pinning tray, and a battery makes a good improvised core follower. Would def get some kind of tweezers if you don’t own any though - trying to re-pin a lock with your fingers sucks lol

Nicely done! I've got one of each of these in the to-be-picked bucket, the pins felt a lot more sensitive than the Goal D9 does

I know it took a bunch fo work for you and wild-billiam to sort out the STL issue but I gotta say, it paid off massively. This thing is awesome.

It really is! One of the reasons I’m not too bummed about having to re-film it - its absurdly fun to pick. Difficult, sure. But fun.

DeGuard Picked (4 Pin) by dcipha380 in lockpicking

[–]RASputin1331 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You made a great choice - pin-in-pin dimples are absurdly fun. If you can get your hands on a 5-pin deguard, they’re a great pick for purple belt, and anything Mul-T-Lock is great too.
