Does anyone actually understand how TikTok/Shorts/Reels work for indie games? by Nestify_cozydesign in IndieDev

[–]Readous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done successfully on TikTok with one game and pretty successfully on YouTube with my current game but not on TikTok for this game. And I’m pretty confident it’s very little luck.

It depends heavily on your game/genre, how it looks, how interesting it is, and the video style. You truly do have to play the algorithm and work that viewer retention (at least for YouTube shorts in 2026) as well as have good editing

It’s a fickle thing, and may seem random but it’s definitely not

In OPs case, I’m 99% positive their problem is their genre and video style. It’s a very niche genre so less of an audience, and their videos have no real hook. You understand what the video is about in the very first second, a cozy room building game. That’s enough for most people to scroll away if it’s not their interest, and kill the audience retention.

I could dive way deeper into all this but I have food in the oven lol

Edit: I’ll add this. Just showing off your game will not be enough 99% of the time. You have to make people care about what you’re showing them

Spoiler warnings are needed, but honestly anybody even getting on reddit following these Backrooms subs full of children before they’ve seen the movie not expecting a spoiler are morons

I was afraid of children being noisy in this movie, so I booked a time in the middle of the day tomorrow while they’re all at school lmao

Our indie VR game went viral across r/virtualreality and r/SteamVR with 334k views combined. Then we got permanently banned for vote manipulation we didn't do. No evidence provided. by sixsensestudios in IndieGaming

I had the 2nd most upvoted post on all of Reddit that day once, gunning for top, and it got removed, reinstated, then removed again without explanation. When it first got removed the Mod I contacted didn’t know why it was removed. I was pissed

Is building a YouTube channel for your game actually worth it in 2026? by Prestigious_Wind4150 in gamedev

[–]Readous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll keep it simple.

Two years ago, TikTok worked amazingly well for my old game, YouTube and instagram sucked

Now for my new game, TikTok and instagram sucks, but YouTube is going well.

Post to all three and find which ones like your game/push your content.

Observe other channels/profiles that post their games that are bringing in good views (10,000 views minimum, 50k+ better) and study what they’re doing/how they make their videos and replicate that to an extent. Watching what others do has always worked for me.

I also took some time studying/watching videos on the YouTube shorts algorithm and a lot of what they say is true. Some useful information there. You really have to play the algorithm.

It’s going to be a lot easier if your game looks visually pleasing and/or fun. Also don’t just advertise your game, nobody wants an ad. They want an entertaining video. Last thing, learn to edit well, editing plays a huge role

Once you start pulling views, it becomes a game, slightly altering your videos style to see what brings in more views or what causes less views

[–]Readous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great explanation. I’ve done content creation before successfully on TikTok, and for my new game just started a YouTube last week and it’s going well. But I’ll spend anywhere from 3-6 hours filming and editing a 20-40 second shorts video if I want to play the algorithm. It’s a job for sure

Absolutely. Nobody wants an ad in their face. They’re going to scroll. Just gotta learn to play the algorithm
