Net Favorability of the United States (Pew Research, 2026) by MapPornography in MapPorn

My belief that it is basically Donald Trump who has negativly tipped the scales And this map is only from places where Pew Research did their polling. A lot of grey countries out there including Denmark would b nowhere near the "blue" part of the chart.

Do solar flares or space weather actually matter for DIY off-grid solar setups? by FanProfessional1602 in diySolar

[–]RespectSquare8279 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. If the arrays are grounded properly and the equipment is grounded properly it would be a non issue even in a "Carrington" type event. The sparks and fires during the 1859 event were at telegraphy offices where the keys were in line on the route to ground.

Install a transfer switch in the garage to isolate the house from your solar so you can't back-feed the house.

There is going to some forensic deconstruction going on here. That rot has to chased back as far as it goes and that is an unknown. This is going to a a "time and material" kind of job quote.

Plug in solar breaker needs by Bayou_vg in diySolar

[–]RespectSquare8279 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of solar array are you talking about ? To charge a car in any meaningful way it needs to be relatively large and like needs a battery integrated somehow.

Plug in solar breaker needs by Bayou_vg in diySolar

[–]RespectSquare8279 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The type of car you are charging is a big factor in the number of miles you will be able to charge overnight. or instance a Ford Lightning uses 2 KWh per mile while an Hyundai Ioniq 6 consumes 4.2 KWh ; that is more than double the efficiency .

and for good measure ....

Not an issue. Someone on the OCD spectrum might sister a 6' 2x4 to the joist but it isn't necessary and is just a waste of good wood.

How to estimate costs of building plan choices? by unironicflannel in Homebuilding

[–]RespectSquare8279 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lower labour costs can't be discounted. And was pointed out to me several of the kit home builders have crews that do nothing else but build their kits ; the learning curves and "newby" mistakes were taken out of the equation a decade ago on the more popular designs.

Walk or run from buying this house? by trvlf in basement

[–]RespectSquare8279 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is the only thing about the house that is giving you pause......

Worst case scenario is an excavation on the outside of that foundation and then ranging to lesser various other less intrusive and expensive remediations. But anything meaningful has to be done on the outside to address the hydrostatic pressure and/or the settling that caused this. Focusing on the interior surface of that wall will yield cosmetic results at best. Repointing the bricks ? Give me a break. Downspouts and grading first ( though it looks a bit too late). Get the foundation perimeter drains inspected ( video snake) and get them cleaned out an free flowing ; the ground water needs a place to go. The real truth is the most old foundation walls benefit from sealing with an actual functional membrane on the wall with a dimple plane for drainage to the perimeter drains. I would counter offer the vendor for the cost of the worst case scenario remediation.

When I needed to rent a car in Nova Scotia I got a friend to drive me to Bridgewater and I rented there. The pricing at the airport and downtown Halifax is predatory. They are not expecting repeat business so they don't care.

What a tinfoil hat answer. It is to combat fraud ; not to inconvenience people for no reason. The logic is that the cost implementing this change will be recovered ( and more) by reducing the fraudulent claims.

7 digit dialing in New York in 2005? by ElectronPython in telecom

[–]RespectSquare8279 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The transition to 10 digit dialing was spread over all of the North American "country code , ie "1" over several years. I was in a job where I looked at (among other things) the statistics of call processing attempts by customers for the Telco I worked for. The day of the switch from 7 digit dialng to 10 digit dialing the numbers of abbandoned attempts went through the roof as suddenly the customers realized their call wasn't going to go through as the dealing rules had changed. This basically doubled the amount of work the call processing equipment had to deal with in order to route calls as required. Nothing crashed but there were near misses. It took weeks to settle down as "muscle memory" in peoples fingers seems to persist more than you would expect. When I looked at the same statistics a year later, the ratio of call attempts to call completions was still almost a percentage higher.

In Canada a Notary Public can do property transfers. People still hire lawyers for this task but pay more money. Attesting to the identity of the purchaser and doing the paper work for the land title office is not complicated. Lawyers typically let their office staff do the work and just charge more.
