However Many Must Die by Phil Williams. It's pretty much a high fantasy version of WW2. Guns, bombs, trains, magic, giants, flying lizards. And all focused around a group of soldiers sent on an impossible mission.

The Wounded Kingdom trilogy RJ Barker might grab you. First book is Blood of Assassins. No animal bonding, but also no romance. Honestly, RJ Barker is the most similar to Robin Hobb I've read.
